Default Official Bonetti Road Clean Up March 7th, 2015

As most people are aware, there have been a lot of threads/comments about the current condition of the Bonetti Road shooting area. Recently there have been BLM and USFS areas closed to shooting because people can’t figure out how to clean up after themselves…. Let’s not let this happen up there!

TIME TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT !!!! WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!

The Calguns-Crew will be working in coordination with PLINK (Please Leave It NRA Klean). PLINK has been doing a great job at maintaining the Foothill Area shooting locations and has a good relationship with the USFS for coordination of clean ups. Steve Morgan of PLINK will help be helping with overall coordination of this event… THANKS STEVE!!

http://www.edrgc.com/plink.htm

When:
Saturday March 7th
Time:
9 am
Where:
We will meet at the Safeway parking lot in Pollock Pines (Exit 60 off of Hwy 50- 6498 Pony Express Trail, Pollock Pines) We will have a quick introduction and safety briefing, then proceed to the site. It is important that we meet at Safeway and sign in prior to proceeding to the site!
What to bring:
As always any rakes, shovels, gloves, or anything else you can think of to pick up trash is needed. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks for yourself. The PLINK Team will be bringing clean up materials to share among the group, but I want to make sure we have more than enough!
This will be a family friendly event and all are welcome to participate in the clean-up effort! Feel free to shoot after the clean-up, BUT MAKE SURE TO CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELVES!

Thanks and look forward to seeing everyone!

Please let me know your ability to participate, so we get an idea of how many people will be attending…

I plan to come out. My question is how this process works. Is the shooting places going to be closed from shooters for the clean up?

I wish I could fully commit, but I can't guarantee. I will say tentatively in.

Each area is kind of it's own little range. If there are people shooting there, we will politely ask them to take a break and ask them to help clean up the area with us. Pretty easy and pretty safe.

I really will try. I am a student right now and I can't say for sure whether I am going to have to lock down on the studying that weekend.

Either way, I was going to add before/after pics would be very cool.

Any chance we need a chain saw, a beaten up truck, or an 8 YO who needs to learn about hard work?

Me and 3 other Calgunners did a little cleanup in 2013 in Placer County. We were surprised how much just four of us were able to help, though there was a lot more mess to be picked up. You won't believe some of the garbage people leave behind, it's really sad. Armed with only rakes, shovels, trash bags and cans, pickup trucks, oh and guns, we were unable to pick up some of the more serious/hazardous waste left behind (washers, TVs, Refrigerator, Basketball hoop with column and base, paint and chemical cans, many misc steel items with razor sharp holes, etc).

Be prepared to pick up some nasty stuff. Strong gloves would be the number one thing to bring. Ferrum, do you know if we will have a big dump trailer, like that shown in the PLINK website?

Some other things that would be helpful:

*Stick with a big magnet on the end to pick up Tula type stuff
*Knee Pads, you will on the ground a lot picking stuff up
*Rake, great for shotgun shells, though I'm not sure of the ground type in the area we are cleaning.
*Can for the trash bags, it's easier to throw stuff in there than in a can-less bag
*Canopy to protect from sun (I know it's early March, but it can still be brutal)
*Table to put stuff on

I also have orange Calguns.net vests, apparently I'm in charge of these for the Sacramento Area. I will bring them for all of us to wear. It makes us look more 'official' and other strangers not want to approach us or shoot close to us.

I'm trying to confirm my work schedule, but I would like to come and participate.

Question - how are we transporting/disposing the refuse we collect? I do not have a pickup or trailer.

The USFS is really going out of their way to help. They will be assisting with and disposing of all the debris!

That is such good news it's almost bad! It makes me think they'd be that much closer to shutting it down if they're spending resources. Either way, the coordination and effort of this event is excellent.

I guess it'd be different if they worked for the public as well as received public funding to do this type of stuff. Oh wait a sec....

i was up there today..

one of the first spots down the road was open.. lots of little bits of trash, but over all it was fairly clean..

after squeezing a few rounds off we drove down further.. some of the other sites.. ummm not so good.. lots of people..

there was talk of a downed tree.. the bad news is there seem to be a few shot up trees that are down.. please quite shooting the trees

hoping to get the time off.. im really looking forward to doing my share..

You're right. They should totally clean up after slob shooters. Actually shooters should just leave their trash there because they pay for this government service!

Shooters that leave trash behind should be publicly whipped, as well as anyone else. The part I was referring to was

"shutting it down if they're spending resources"

Late replying here, but I will be there with my 8 year old son who has been there on a few of these clean ups. To answer a question as to how we get the garbage out, of few of us will have trucks to put the garbage in, I will also be bringing a trailer as well. We then take it to a large roll off dumpster at the ranger district that is set aside for just this type of event. Steve has small bags for heavy items, I will have several boxes of large bags as well as a couple trash cans and 5 gallon buckets to use. Steve will supply Subway lunches if you sign in with him at Safeway in the morning. Bring gloves, I will have several extra pairs as well.

Ferrum, My wife will be out of town that weekend so it looks like I'm in to help out. If you could tabulate the attendees and please let let me know as I would be happy to provide lunch for the crew.

Choices:

1. Fried Chicken and potato salad.
2. Burgers and chips.

I think that is awesome for you to offer, but part of the meeting in the morning at Safeway, Steve takes everybodys lunch order for Subway sandwiches and has one of his guys deliver them to the area we are cleaning up. If anyone wants something different then good on you for offering.

This right here really nails it.
The Forest Service wants to work with us on this. If it wasnt for volunteers these areas would have been closed long ago, and they do not want that either. Many times the District Ranger has been out there cleaning up on the weekend (he is off those days) with volunteers. I know Kyle will be there that day from the USFS. Sometimes the head of Recreation will be there, someone from Law Enforcement, and even the Forest Supervisor has been out to help pick up garbage with the volunteers.
They truly value the help we bring and are great people to meet as they are the one the manage the area to begin with.

Looks like the weather will be dry and warm thru the weekend.
I was out there both Saturday and Sunday

Light rain Saturday and only a few people out by the time I left at noon. Just went to get pictures and also met with the Forest Service.

Sunday was out at the end of the road cutting firewood, nice sunny day, every spot for shooting was being used when I came back out.

I am heading out early on Saturday morning to occupy a few of the sites before others get there. Everyone else should meet up with Steve Morgan at Safeway by 9am

It is a good idea to grt to the spots early. A 9am meet at safeway with paperwork and waiting for people, i imagine we'd get there no earlier than 10am, which many spots will already be occupied.
