Default Hugs....

How in the heck do you get out of hugging people.. family, friends, etc . Seems no matter what position I try to carry it never fails someone gets a hug in and then gives me that weird look like... is that a gun in your pants or are you just happy to see me....
Probably no answer to the question but was wondering.

I suppose it depends on how you wear your EDC. Mine is at 3 or 330 so it's never really an issue....

My CCW instructor suggested putting your arms downward at an angle so that their arms go over yours...kinda awkward but works.

Most anyone I would 'hug' know that I carry anyway, I don't hug 'just anyone'

I carry at 4:30 so they'd pretty much have to be feeling my backside.

Blade your body sideways/45 degrees with your gun away from the hugger.
Give them the old, "half-hug" with one arm. It will usually work if you're tall enough, and the hug isn't too vigorous....

Never works with my short arse....

What kind of gun? Is there a specific venue this happens such as church or are you a character at Disneyland? If the hugs are limited to a certain location there can be a range of options besides suddenly claiming you have leprosy or that you become an untouchable in the Hindu culture.

Also are you male or female.

You preemptively say something when you see the hug coming like ..

"I'm sorry, I have a cold."

"O.K. , What's a little herpes between friends."

"My wife killed the last person I hugged."

" Tickle tickle tickle!!! "

Make sure your arms are UNDER theirs. That way you can force them high. I'm 6' 4" so I also bend at the waste to "get down" to their level so I can get my arms under theirs. It seems awkward at first, but it's better than saying "I don't hug" in my extended family.

Tell them:

I'm just happy to see you
It's my phone
It's my colostomy bag
It's none of your damn business
You think you're coming down with a cold so better not to hug right now

Or just say, "oh that's just my gun"...and enjoy the look on their face and whatever comments come next.

Massad Ayoob in one of his books suggest leaving your upper arms parallel to your body with the lower arms straight out. Your elbows will be covering your firearm. Works good.

I carry in different ways depending on my clothing and where I am going. I am male.
The circles I associate with seem to be very touchy huggy feely.
I am not talking about full body huggs and swinger parties either.

This is what I do. One arm hug at 45° with my right arm hanging down over my gun.

I carry at 3 o'clock, when known huggers approach I bend my right elbow and cover the grip and keep it close to my body, so far it's worked well. It's the surprise huggers that are the problem. Yesterday someone bumped in to me and had a puzzled expression on his face.... I just let it slide.

I don't care. I hug a lot as an usher in my church, and my EDC was tapped once or twice today as well. No response is necessary. No one has ever asked me about it. Seems like some overthink this. Just make sure it doesn't go "click."

Always be carrying something when you see everyone saying "hello" and hugging. Or when they are saying "goodbye" and hugging. Socially kind of weird to start hugging in the middle of the conversation. Usually there are signs when the hugging starts, that is when you grab something so you can't be hugged.

Grab anything a box, some books, some bags, a dead hooker, you choose.

This is interesting. I've never really thought about this because I've never experienced it. I stay away from physically contact. I don't shake hands or do hugs. I'm a germaphobe. Some people do nasty **** with their hands and don't wash them. I'm a serial hand-washer. My way of physically saying hi or bye is the fist bump. If someone wants to shake my hand I just make up something. It has always worked. But, if I were to hug someone, I would probably tuck my right arm low and use my elbow to push the grip close to my body and keep it there for the duration of the hug. I carry 3 o'clock.

just flick them in the nose or headbutt them. That always works for me...lol. I'm not much of a hugger.

I'm laughing at some of these responses and work arounds. You feel bad for telling your family and friends you carry?

People need to get over this "carry guilt".

I don't think any of us feel bad about telling those close to us they carry.

However, discretion is the better part of valor.

Years ago I foolishly let a family member, a fellow shooter, know that I carry.

He promptly proceeded to brag to everyone who would listen, including gun store employees.

Concealed is concealed in word and deed...
