Barrel Nut removal on Draco AK Pistol
I have dremelled the spot weld with a circular cutter but still having problems taking it off. What else should I do to take this off? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here are some pictures of the barrel nut I dremmelled. TIA!

Just to state the obvious - you are pushing the retaining pin ALL THE WAY IN when you try to remove the brake, right? Also, it is reverse what our threads are, so it's righty-loosey...
Other than that, take off more steel! Last edited by djleisure; 11-05-2009 at 1:37 PM.. |

And make sure you are depressing the pin on the bottom of the front site base. Mine was pretty tight even after cutting the weld. I had to use a wrench to get it loose the first time, now its not a problem at all.

Yes, I am pressing the pin. It's trying to move but just won't budge. I'll try to go a little more on the cut and see what happens.

Isn't the removal of the Draco barrel nut a "No, no" in California?
Threaded barrels on pistols are illegal, right? So, even if you are putting another muzzle device on, the period of time the Draco is without it's muzzle device, the firearm is in a bad configuration. |

Threaded barrels are only prohibited on semi-automatic pistols that have a detachable magazine. Threaded barrels are not regulated on any other firearms in CA.

After I got it to the point you did with the rotary tool, I tapped mine a few times with a small finishing hammer. The weld will brake at the point you got it too. Then just twist it off. LH threads remember...

I got mine off, I used the old school method. Yes I am now a real HACKER as I am often called in the gaming community Good ole Hack Saw, my only problem is not realizing that the threads are reverse on these things and I ended up putting it on really tight, and then I pretty much destroyed it. Pics to be found in my Draco thread.
Just keep going at it, also my pin took a couple hits to get back out of it's hole. It did not want to pop back out for some reason -Gio

Good News! I finally was able to take off the barrel nut!
The secret was cutting the darn pin that was spring loaded.

So you cut off the spring loaded pin?

It also serves to keep your muzzle device in place too. Most ak brakes and flash hiders have provision for the pin. There's a reason it's spring loaded man, your are supposed to push it in while turning the nut off.

Ya did what?! I thought you said you were pushing down on the pin. Once the weld was cut, pushing down on the pin and turning counter clockwise with a wrench should have done it.

The important thing is I was able to take off the barrel nut.
Any comp or brake I decide to use comes with lock screws anyways and will be loctite from barrel thread to the comp and on the lock screws..
