Lots of confusion here on this it seems. I read up a bit. Nothing has really changed.
The fellows in the shop just had it a bit wrong. Saying I need both.
A lock purchased within 30 days and my home safe make and model.
CORRECT, they had it wrong. What I call "Counter Monkeys" at LGS often do. Whether intentional or not.

And some FFLs have actual store policy of lying to customers. So they can use gov regs as a scapegoat to sell overpriced cheap chinese POS locks to boost their bottom line.

I picked up longgun yesterday filled out safe affidavit and left with firearm. No safety demo because I used hunting license instead of fsc.. Big 5 accepts any receipt dated within 30 days for lock.

ATF requires all handguns be present with a locking device. Long guns are not required federally to have a locking device.

CA DOJ requires a lock that is actually ON the CA roster of locks and safety devices for all firearms. A safe affidavit may be used instead of the locking device.

You can't use the safe affidavit for CA to get around the federal requirement since there is no way to verify it.

For instance, CZ handguns do not come with a CA approved safety lock so yes, you must buy another one or fill out a safe affidavit. Even with this, the law states that the firearm must not be sold with a non approved CA locking device.

Yes its this complicated and yes, we are required to keep the safe affidavit or a receipt that shows you bought the lock within the last 30 days.

i have a friend that just buys the lock from a store on the way to the pickup, then on the way back returns the lock.

the law never says you have to keep the lock after purchase. and especially if it is to satisfy the stupid "within 30 days" CA law when a perfectly fine factory cable lock typically comes with most modern guns that most if not all sellers include.
