Default URSA Shoots for April ‘18 - 2000 yards and counting + an Update on the “URSA 3K"

URSA Shoots for April ‘18 - 2000 yards and counting + an Update on the “URSA 3000 Yard Challenge (2018)”

The Unlimited Range Shooters Association (URSA) will have its next regular monthly shoots on Sunday, April 7th, in NorCal (Clear Lake/Upper Lake area), and on Saturday, April 14th, in SoCal (Barstow area). We will also be having the “URSA 3000 Yard Challenge (2018)” on Sunday, April 15th, in SoCal (same venue as the April 14th event).

For our monthly events, we start shooting at min 2000 yards and those that shoot well enough (at least 4 hits in 10 consecutive shots during record round, and at least two shooters) then shoot at min 2500 yards – moving out from there in roughly 500 yard increments, always based on shooter achievement at the prior distance. All locally-legal firearms (rifles and rifle/pistols) are welcome. There are NO fees, we shoot on public land.

The NorCal contact is Lynn ( Lynn is our Regional Director (RD) for CA/NV. Detailed info for NorCal is usually posted on CalGuns at .

More info about URSA and how shoots are conducted is at Especially note FAQ 13, which describes course of fire.

Initial info re monthly SoCal events is provided below.

A 4WD, or AWD with decent ground clearance, is strongly recommended as the sand can get very rutted and deep.

We will have targets set up at 2080 yards and at 2630 yards. Shooting at 2630, and beyond, is NOT guaranteed – that’s determined by how well shooters do at each distance (there must be at least two shooters with 4 in 10 or better at each current distance to move down range).

Because of the number of shooters expected on Sat (those coming down from NorCal to get set up for Sunday and folks from the SoCal trying to get into the 3K at the last minute), please do not bring more than one rifle. We would lose too much of the better environments were we to allow such testing at this late date.

We try to start shooting at sunrise. March was cold and windy. April will likely be cold but warmer than March (at this time it looks to be mid to upper 50s). In most months there is little or no wind during most of the time we shoot. It’s too early for a precise wind forecast. We'll see.

Those that sign up (cut-off is 6 PM, Wednesday the 11th) will get event-specific info a few days before the actual event date, tentatively the evening of the 11th. If I do not hear from you by the cutoff, you will not receive the event-specific info, which includes directions and final timing. Also, if I don’t hear from you, I will assume you are not planning on shooting, the headcount requirement may not be met, and the event may be cancelled – which is what happened three (3) months in a row in mid-‘17. Please contact me at with any questions. Thanks.

NOTE: URSA is now using the online program, Zoho Forms, to capture Liability Release and Build Sheet sign up data, and spectator/other Liability Release sign up data. Please use the appropriate link at the top of the Activity/Event Schedule page to sign up for this and future events ( If you have any problem with the online form, please e-mail me ASAP. BTW, the form asks for limited “address” (only city, state, and ZIP). We do NOT need your street address.

Update on the “URSA 3000 Yard Challenge (2018)”

As of Saturday, March 31, we have nine (9) shooters qualified for this event. The last two qualification opportunities are listed above. To qualify for the 3K a shooter must participate in one of the regular URSA monthly events and get at least 5 hits in 10 consecutive shots at 2054 yards, or further, (NorCal) or 2080 yards, or further, (SoCal). See the separate “URSA 3000 Yard Challenge (2018) – Final Drill and Details” posting on this forum. NOTE: Because of the number of shooters expected at the 3K, and their spotters, this is NOT an event for spectators – no room for vehicles and too much associated noise and people congestion. Qualify and be welcome.
