Hastings/Senlac was indeed 1066. If I recall the thread correctly, the conceit was a time after the Normans had pretty well consolidated their grasp on England. But it's been years since I read it.

Just read the Oceans Rising trilogy by Tom Pollock and Jack Seybold. If you've ever wondered how the gun control types would do TEOTWAWKI, then you have to read this book. It took me forever to read because it was so implausible: (paraphrased) Let's stop having armed patrols on the property. We will be able to feel if someone with bad intentions is coming.

Some interesting ideas in the book, but there are too many amazing coincidences (Uncle Max left me a remote farm complete with everything needed to survive for exactly the number of people we have. Yay!). This book is a $5.00 facepalm, IMHO.

Just finished 'The Passage'. An 845 page epic. And it's the first of a trilogy so beware. The second book 'The Twelve' is out, but the third isn't done yet. It might be before you finish these though.

Well written, a little wordy at times, but it kept me up at night. A believable variation on a zombie apocalypse somewhat similar to 'The Stand'. There's a bit of supernatural leanings and it reminded me sometimes of a Dean Koontz novel, but I liked it. Koontz wears me out and I need a couple of months between his books but I didn't feel that way with this one. Downloading the second book now.

Borrowed and downloaded from the library so it was free!

Amazon reviews -

http://www.amazon.com/The-Passage-No...ds=the+passage

edit - Well, crap. I searched and everything. SMLE-MAN beat me to it. Still good books though.

lol...that reminded me of 'City of Ember'. It was pretty good book about a group that lives in a 'city' that was carved under a mountain. I could not figure out why these characters did all this stuff together and never kissed or jumped each others bones. Then I read later that it was written as a teen book. Doh. Still good though. The second book 'People of Sparks' kinda sucked though.

Yeah, when in a SHTF situation, a good book would be "Staying Alive" . The pages would literally let you know when in a SHTF situation, you're too busy building booby traps, gathering resourses, secure a perimeter, and keep an eye out for unfriendly intruders.

The end of the pages would describe how you would be killed if you're too busy with something else instead of keeping an eye out for safety purposes.

It will give you a good SHTF fiction read and as a bonus you get a detailed accountings of all the critical gun/government confrontations in US history (Miami shootout, Waco, Ruby Ridge, etc.). A very good read!
That book is entirely too long. I got a ways into it and got bored. I was waiting for it to go somewhere but it was lagging.

I haven't read through the entire thread since the last time I did a month or two ago - so these may have been mentioned.

http://www.amazon.com/Going-Home-A-N...angry+American
http://www.amazon.com/Surviving-Home...angry+american

Way better than the stuff Rawles puts out.

Joe Nobody's stuff is good.

D.J. Molles stuff is good also - for zombies.

Best stuff out there though -- Matthew Bracken's first three books.

Have you read the Obamacare bill yet? It's pretty scary and does a good job giving the reader an idea of what America will look like after a major economic collapse.

The Day After World War III by Edward Zuckerman.

It was published ironically in 1984. It's a good read if you can find it, hardcover you know. Five stars on Amazon.
If I remember correctly, after It hits the fan the Federal Government will send our mail to the morgue, AKA the Post Office.

Johnstone was a pretty interesting guy. I never met him face-to-face, but I did correspond with him a fair bit and participated in a few conference calls with him.

There are dozens books in the Ashes series. The first book is very good, the next few are okay, but it goes down from there. It has been close to twenty years since I read them, but as I recall perhaps the first three to perhaps half dozen books are okay.

His Eagles series is also quite good.

Try "Stealing Second" by Nicholas Antinozzi. Ugly shooting event causes bad legislation, leads to confiscation attempts, drones and curfews. Oath Keepers vs those that aren't. Ambivilance vs believers.

I liked it, had a hard time putting it down. Follows one guy's troubles and his comversion to the right way of thinking.

Just finished ' The Dog Stars' by Peter Heller after reading a review in the Air and Space magazine of all places and got it from the local library. Very gripping and interesting story which involves a survivor and his partner (not that kind of partner) after a global plague kills 90% of the population. The narrator of the story (Hig) is a pilot and flies a Cessna 152. Great read and very quick too. Wish it had been longer.

Great book - I agree, I wish it was longer... Silly detail, but I am pretty sure it was an older Cessna 180 or 182.

It's dated but how about Jerry Ahern's Survivalist series? It's about survival in a WWIII ravaged America.
