Magpul'ish stock
Like everyone, I really liked the work the OP did on that Saiga. Those that have added Magpul SGA stocks to their shotguns know how nice they make the grip feel. I have an SGA for a Mossberg so I’ve been looking at ways to make it work on the Saiga, and sadly I hadn’t found a way to blend the two together without altering the rifle. I don’t possess machining skills to make an adapter for the connection but I do, arguably, have some decent wood working skills from my time as a finish carpenter. I figured if some guy on the other side of the world can bang out functional AK’s with old world tools, maybe I could make a humble version of the SGA myself. To be fair, I contacted Magpul about a year ago and their response was a disappointing “we cannot confirm nor deny that we will or will not ever produce this as a product”. Disappointing to say the least. I decided to model a stock, closely resembling the SGA, and make it for myself out of red oak. If Magpul started making these, I would be nothing but pleased.

Thats a pretty smart looking stock. What is that made of?
[EDIT] Now that I take a better look at it, it looks like wood. GJ!

I dig the SGA stock on the Saiga. Hoping a mod will come out by someone. I added wood furniture to my 5.45 Saiga a couple years ago. Decided to wrap it with some McNett camo wrap to help protect the wood, since it wasn't cheap. Also gives it more grip over the slick wood. Plan on running it in an upcoming Carbine class to see how well I can run it over AR's.

Hey guys,
It’s been a while now and I’ve had some time to see how I like the new stock. I like it. The stock is 2 inches shorter than the original stock, and the grip angle feels much better to me. I added Talon grips to the grip area, and what a difference. I said I had no intentions of actually making these, and I don’t. I did however reach out to a cabinet making shop, and he may be interested. He has a CNC machine so he could probably dial in my prototype and make it even better. My question. Who and how many would be interested in this? Stained with one or two color choices or unfinished? Honest pricing range? Please let me know so I can give him a more detailed pitch. These will be made by blending the original stock design and a similar looking design of the Magpul stock. Nothing would need to be altered on the rifle. Plug and play. I’m not going to spend a huge amount of time on this, as MP could come out with their variation and it would be over. So please give me some feedback from those that would be interested. Thanks Last edited by johninRC; 02-10-2017 at 12:27 PM.. |

Hey guys,
Just an update. I was in contact with a wood shop, and the guy seemed really interested in the wood stock. Then nothing. Now he doesn't answer or return my phone calls. Oh well, if another shop comes up I'll look into making these again. As I've said, I'm not looking to get into producing these myself as I don't have the time. For me, they are a bit labor intensive without the correct tools for production. If anything changes, I'll post a notice. |

Hey guys....
http://www.saigastock.com/wooden-furniture-c-4302.html or http://www.ironwooddesigns.com/produ...ter-rifle.html I've ordered from both in years past and they work and feel great.

Hey guys,
Here's the latest with my project. Will probably leave it like this for now, unless I decide to go with a muzzle break. I'm really liking the feel and function so far. Obviously would feel much better in the correct featured configuration. Oh well, this will serve as a reminder that there are those that would strip us of our rights to further their agenda. Looking forward to everyone else's builds. First, I don't know why the one pic loads upside down. Hmmmm. Anyway. I wanted to add that I upgraded to a Krebs ambi safety. I had some difficulties trying to get the original safety out and I sent an email to Krebs asking for some advice. I figured it out that the original did not just simply rotate up and out, like normal. I needed to remove the fire control group to get it out. The Krebs fit right in after that. My point is that when I contacted Krebs, I went back and forth with support for a couple of emails. They realized that my safety wasn't normal, so they had me talk with Marc Krebs himself. He was very friendly, professional and genuinely wanted to help me figure it out. Thought I'd throw a positive review to Marc and his team. Oh, I really dig the new safety in this set up. Way better! Yes, very easy to engage or disengage the safety! Keep in mind that mine is in the sporter configuration. I place my straight extended index finger on the front of the trigger guard and roll my hand upward. The rear part of the safety is just above my knuckle, and when I roll my hand up it disengages the safety. Engaging is just a matter of pushing it down with the index finger. It was a little tight to begin with but has worn in really nice. Absolute upgrade for the sporter version. IMHO.
