Default Need advice/help on importing my deceased grandpa's gun (international)

Hello forum members,

My grandpa has passed over 10yrs and managed to sell off most of his rifles with the exception of a shotgun (Bock IZ 27). My grandma recently found out about the shotgun and wants to get rid of it/doesn't want to keep paying for police storage. I am attempting to keep the shotgun and want to import here.

The shotgun is located in Poland and I'm located in LA (north of downtown).

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on what steps need to be taken in order to import the shotgun, if at all possible? I am already a gunowner so no need for the weapons permit.

Or does anyone know any FFL dealers that deal with international gun deals that I could go to and ask some questions?

Sincerely,
-Nameo0

It sounds like the shotgun is an heirloom and you want to keep it. This is great, an I've been there, but this may end up being a little bit of a challenge.

I would think the easiest thing would be for you to go to Poland, and bring the firearm back with you, but I don't have a good understanding of Poland firearm law which could make that even more difficult.

If you don't want to or can't go get it and bring it back, you need to have it imported through an FFL. The FFL will need to file an ATF Form 6, and wait for it to be approved. You need to be sure that the shotgun is California legal. You'll then need to work with Poland on getting the firearm exported.

There is some information available here.

Once they import it the completing of the transfer to you is the same as any other internet transfer.

You can do it on your own, but will need to follow the process RoundEye mentioned. While it's not overly complicated (I've had a customer do that as well) some folks find it easier just to pay someone to do it.
