You thought right. But since switching out barrels is not exactly a 2-minute operation, and since the other parts are rather cheap, you might as well have a dedicated upper.

Ky2970, the only difference is the barrel is bore'd for a .300, all other things being equal is the same as a 5.56. Even the buffer, buffer spring is the same, same pressures, in fact the recoil may be a little lighter on the 155 grain .300 over the 62 grain 5.56. You hit the beauty of this caliber. I was originaly planning to just build a complete upper and swap it with my 5.56 AR lower. But the cost of just getting a lower receiver is not that much so I went with building a complete .300 rifle.
I plan on hand painting the .300 from the movie "300" in blood red just above the mag well. I think that's gonna look killer in blood red finger nail polish. It will be just like the movie title splatter and all... I'll post the pic's when done. |

Well the 115gr Remington and pns (?) stuff is around $12/20. About as good as you find. I am hoping when freedom starts selling .300blk they will have blaster as well as the regular stuff.

Why would you need 220 grains for this round? And why would you need it for home defense?

Seems the bullet would have less tendency to go through someone and possibly whoever was behind them as a 5.56 might velocity wise. Plus add the .30 cal for punch. I want one!

I'd see the interest for a subsonic configuration, but that's it.

^^Hopefully PSA will put theirs on sale.. $459 is a bit much to pay for an upper with no BCG or CH. I'm almost thinking of building one over time. $100 upper reciever, $200 Stoner Barrel, $50 upper parts kit, $20 low pro gas block. Saves roughly $100 and you can pick what you want.

Get a pistol, that's what they were designed for; close quarter combat. I can't believe I used CQC, I'm not a poseur...Anyway, get a handgun. Choice up to you. I've got a Beretta 9mm with 147 grain Golden Saber hollowpoints; opens up a realllly big hole, about twice the 9mm. Don't screw around with a rifle, use that to shoot someone 100+ yards away. If they are in the same room with you, blast away with the pistol.

BCG?
Looks like a good build, but I don't see your BCG listed. I have an upper or order at DSA too since last week. PSA looks to have pretty good deals, but with the BCG and those are $100 min. Hope PSA is faster than I've read.

She is a great rifle and I am getting decent precision out of it. It isn't uncommon at 100 yards to see 3 bullets touching with m80 surplus bullets. I have some AMAX on the way to really test it. At 50 yards with surplus: |

300 blk
I was going to just swap the upper back and forth, but since I bought an extra lower as Obama insurance I decided that a lower was a terrible thing to waste, so I'll just do a complete 300 blackout. Next up is a Grendel or maybe 6.8 spc II. Grendel has bigger punch and range, but ammo is harder to get. Decisions, decisions.

You can use american 7.62x39 brass and case form it into Grendel so that save a little bit... Oh yeah and I have a spare bolt carrier for the 7.62 head so that is my back up |

One thing about 300BLK, ammo is expensive. If you get "reloads" you might want to avoid M80 308 projectiles because they are copper coated steel. Just a consideration if you worry about barrel life.
Swap out your buffer to standard carbine. I had a H buffer and it caused some failures. Some makers are moving to pistol length gas systems to get a bit more reliability. Gas port sizes differ between makers too. Carbine 300BLK barrels: My CMMG - .115 (nitride) My DSA - .125 (pre-divoted for gas block) |

I can vouch for that. Gun ran fine with standard carbine buffer. I got cute with H buffers and springs and got failures to feed. Also, may have made my trigger group start to walk which subsequently lead to double fires (Took me awhile to figure that one out)

what ever you do DO NOT buy a sota arms 300 blackout upper. I just bought one and I am regretting it. The quality is horrible there are machining marks everywhere and the bolt somehow had moisture in it that there was blue quartz/rust on it. I contacted them emailed them pictures and nothing. I did not want to post any negative reviews on them and even gave them time to fix the problem. I talk to a lady she said email her pictures and she would get back to me......A week later I have not heard anything. So just wanted to protect others. Ill be posting pictures that I emailed Sota Arms

I dunno that bolt. Mine from SOTA doesn't look like that. Mine pretty much looks just like my PSA and DD bolts/bcg. In fact I'm not sure which is which. As for the machining markings I guess I got some in the corner of my upper too. No idea how those affect functionality or if they do. I've run quite a number of rounds (~1000+). With the only problems being self induced by my messing with springs. EDIT: WOW prices on those uppers went up! Yeah I guess I might be irritated with the machining like that if I paid that much. They were much cheaper when I got mine and .300blk complete uppers weren't as easy to find.

I continue to find issues with the sota arms upper the charging handle is scrapping the top of the receiver and the holes for the take down pins are out of spec I have to hammer the pins in.
On top of that look at these machine marks inside causing the bolt to stick ImageUploadedByTapatalk1354000183.071555.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1354000126.605890.jpg

So there I was reading the forums getting all antsy waiting for my 300 blackout from DS Arms and was on a different forum and someone said that Palmetto State had 6.8 SPC II uppers (with the barrels made by FN and minus the BCG) for $299 black friday weekend, and Midway had Daniel Defense BCG's for $160 for the 6.8. I figured that it would be a while for DSA to get the 300 out to me anyways so I bought the upper and the BCG.
Then today I got an email from DSA customer service that said "we have uppers being assembled right now and your order should be filled shortly." Maybe the wait won't be so long after all. Of course it all depends on what they define "shortly" as. As far as loading my own, I used to, but for all the time it takes, and the peace of mind that I didn't overlook somthing I let the pros load them for me. |

I bought a 300 Blkout upper at the gun show this weekend for $370 w/out BCG from "Tony's Parts". The guy was knowledgable, and backed his work up with a one year warranty. Basically if anything goes wrong I take it back in and get either a new one or my money back. Not bad. I was having issues with my racking/charging the rifle when I put it on my MP-15 lower. I swapped in the CH and BCG from my MP-15 sport, and it was having a hard time (high friction). Went back to the gun show the next day to ask about it and it was determined to be a bad fit on behalf of the carry handle. New Milspect charging handle and it's smooth as can be. 100 rounds of blackout in the mail from Primary Arms (Remington UMC plinking ammo) for $71 shipped. Not cheap, but an awesome round. Range report to follow in a few days!

Still waiting on the upper from DS Arms. I did get an email a few days after the out of stock automated email from a guy in sales saying the parts were in and they were assembling them now, like I said it still hasn't shipped. My 6.8 upper from Palmetto came last week though.
