Why isn't your screen name "Capt Obvious"? Which skills exactly are you referring to? Most of us have learned the skills to survive in our current civilization. Those who haven't learned these skills did stuff like walking out into traffic and they probably didn't survive. If you are trying to tell us that we need to learn and practice the skills to survive without any modern conveniences like electricity, running water, central air conditioning and heat, a fully stocked grocery store on every corner and a government teat to suck upon, then why didn't you just come out and say that? We need to learn the survival skills necessary to allow us to survive in a SHTF scenario like a major earthquake, or the collapse of the US Government, or a massive solar EMP. Primitive hunter/gatherer skills will be needed in the immediate short term, and 1700/1800s farming/ranching techniques will be needed in the long term. Some skills needed for survival will be: Making a fire without matches. Purifying Water. Identifying edible plants and poisonous plants. Eating the wrong thing can kill you. Food preparation without a microwave oven. Food storage/preservation without refrigeration. Medical treatment without high tech surgical suites. Raising animals for food and the associated slaughter and butchering. Making soap. The use of hand tools. Making cloth from natural sources. Blacksmithing. Carpentry. Sanitation without running water and modern sewage treatment. Disposal of the dead. And a hundred other skills that most members of modern society do not currently possess.

Most here, up to 90% will perish within a year if things collapse. They don't have the resources put away to last the year or so that will take things to sort out. Last edited by KevinB; 01-23-2013 at 1:22 PM.. |

Excellent list Deco. I expect to have a tough time turning an animal into dinner, cuts and cleanliness will be tricky.
Id edible plants, needs work. Treating a bullet wound, high on my list.. the ability to keep a sharp blade is pretty good. Working with molten metal is a must. Making soap is not to be overlooked, jeeze, I'm slacking. Speaking of tools -- learn how to make electricity work for you! Last edited by sdkevin; 01-23-2013 at 7:40 PM.. |

Gardening, bee-keeping, small animal husbandry, fruit tree pruning and when those psychopathic bastards running things try to come and take it, Ragnar Benson had some pretty good ideas put out by Loompanics about 30 years ago.

A good old fashioned camping triip is a great way to practice your skills. Being in the outdoors adds some realism and sometimes some motivation, as opposed to making soap in the garage with the football game on the tv. I used to camp with very primitive tools and a rifle for days on end when I was in my teens, and bringing only minimal food and water. Of course, I was only a matter of a few miles from roads and people, but it was great experience. I was hungry a lot, and ate a couple of fairly unsavory things, but practiced building a fire, making a shelter, finding clean (enough) water, etc.

Well on that note I give you my shameless plug... The Home Distiller's Workbook
Being able to make moonshine is a huge, at least to me, skill to have in your arsenal. I can use it to power my generator, my cars, I have an alcohol stove, you can clean with it, it has medial uses and I've even heard it's pretty tasty to drink!

GeeDog is Right. You do need to go on a camping trip. I use to go camping all the time when I was younger. But I am older, and I like my bunker.
But for the last 2 years, I have been spending a week at GF house. In the desert north of Kramer Junction. One week in winter and a week on the summer. This summer, I plan to stay there in my truck and B.O.T. This would be my first test in 40 years. ================================================== ======== Now, An idea... Maybe we should have a BUG OUT meet. |

You will find that the ground is significantly harder than it was 40 years ago.
