Default bulge behind fixed choke ??

So what can be done after there is a bulge behind the fixed choke from shooting steel shot? Do you just stop shooting steel and never mind the bulge? Cut the barrel??

If the barrel has enough wall thickness behind the bulge, cut the barrel and have it bored/threaded for choke tubes.

I'd retire the barrel and get a replacement. Cutting might be an option, but shooting with the bulged barrel can't be giving you optimal performance. It could work okay, but it would drive me nuts just knowing it's there.

I'm kinda curious as to exactly what kind of "insight" you're looking for.

Whether or not to have your wife/son/daughter/best friend/favorite dog standing anywhere around you while you shoot a gun with an 'effed up barrel, probably due to misuse/abuse/defect? Whether or not the rest of the barrel might be 'effed up, but you just can't see it? Whether or not cutting it off will make it all better?

A bulge is a warning, that you are lucky to get, it's also a sign your guardian angel was watching over you. A good pattern is the absolute very least of your concerns. Scattering barrel shrapnel should be your first. Stupid, is at the very least expensive, at the most, fatal. You're not stupid, or you wouldn't be asking questions. Ask yourself this one, do you really want to see if stressed barrel steel can safely contain 14,000 pounds per square inch?
Sorry if I get a little twitchy when I see a topic like this. Seems I'm cursed with the morons that like to test the above theory, and others, at the bench alongside me. You never want to witness the carnage, on both firearms, and bodies that I have.
Do you need more insight than that?
Options:
Have a smith cut it off behind the bulge, and magnaflux it for any unseen cracks, and use it with a cyl bore.
As above, and have tubes installed.
Get a new barrel.

And in my op I should have been clearer that the "bulge" is about 1/8" wide & just noticeable by eye.and from what I hear is called a ring bulge from shooting steel shot through a choke thats too tight

Gawd I wish CG would do something with this server!
Half an hr trying to post, then it posts 5 times, another 20 mins trying to delete 4 posts!
reptilla, steel shot and slugs will do that to a full choke. Depending on the gun, some get lucky and it just opens the choke up, and most times they never notice it.

Sounds like you are waiting for somebody to tell you what you want to hear so you can do what you planned on doing anyway, ignore the problem and hope for the best.

Lot of doomsday drama here --
What exactly will happen to the weapon if he continues to shoot with a bulged barrel?
Other than perhaps poor patterns --

Last I heard, the consensus on the ring formed from shooting steel shot through an older barrel is that it is cosmetic only and doesn't affect performance.

That being said, it's pretty obvious that the barrel is now weaker for having that ring formed, I would probably retire or cut it. If it's a 28 inch barrel, see if you can cut it to a 26 and threaded for chokes.

You are an idiot because you are ignoring a potential safety hazard for yourself and whomever is around you, and you got the same answer from everybody yet you keep fishing for a different answer because you obviously think it's fine and are waiting for somebody to echo that back to you.

Not to mention that the guy that posted in this thread who shoots more shells in a month than you will in a lifetime has asked you twice what kind of shotgun it is, yet you refuse to answer.

Again, I apologize for my question and the thought that one could have a " friendly non threataning" conversation with "a community that helps eachother" on these forums. I Will refrain from further interaction on this sight as to not offend anyone.

elsolo -- pretty judgemental --

No one has really identified the hazard - can you?
what exactly is going to happen -- any facts or just conjecture?

Man asked a civil question, he is entitled to a civil answer -
Name calling is rather juvenile --

Jeez, do you need a friggin' picture? And you wonder why they're trying to enforce more restrictions on gun ownership!

Here's the deal. He's gotten a bunch of answers, but asking on the internet whether a gun is safe to shoot, is like asking for a medical diagnosis over the internet.

The responses are not very valid.

Would you shoot a gun because some guy on the internet named "funky monkey 235" said it was ok?

You want a valid answer? Take it to a qualified gunsmith, or replace the barrel.

There's your valid answer.

A bulged barrel is an indicator that something has failed. Don't use it until it has been checked by a competent gunsmith who is familiar with bulged barrels. They can be fixed. Try calling Briley for a recommendation - I think they do repairs.
