Default Is the 1911 the end all be all of 45's

So right now I own a c9 I have a p95 going on 10 day hold as soon as my ffl gets it in and now I want my next handgun to be something with a bit more punch. I'm also a cheap sob and don't want to spend 1k on a pistol, so I'm thinking an ria 1911. My question is, is the 1911 the best bet when looking for a .45?

Yes, but am not familiar with the RIA. If you spend in the $1K range you have many reliable lifetime options.

yes, unless you live anywhere else besides california. if that's the case, get something with a extended 30 round magazine.

So? If you really can't shoot worth a shat, you can buy 40 1911 mags.

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct...tNumber=564303

Of course, 8+1 and a couple extra mags are more than sufficient for most half way decent shooters.

It's hard to say since the model 1911 varies from super cheap clones to masterpieces from Heirloom Precision, not all 1911's are created equal.

If you are going to be cheap, why not be cheap and reliable? Get a G21 and you have a very reliable and reasonably priced .45acp. I love my 1911's but more Glocks are reliable out of the box than 1911's. Just my opinion.

The Rock Island got a decent review in Gun Test magazine. Looks like a good value.
I guess I'm even cheaper than you because I just don't want to pay the high price of .45 ACP and I don't want to get into reloading. If cost was no object I have shot and liked the .45 Glocks.
Good luck and enjoy your new toys.

I havent heard much in the way of bad things about the RIA 1911's. Really it depends on what your going to do with it, for just shooting at the range, great the RIA is probably perfect for that. For a defensive .45, I would personaly prefer a Kimber(for a 1911 style) or CZ 97(more ammo).

I am not a 1911 fanboy but I just bought a Gold Cup and oh my does she shoot well. With my G34 I was shooting 2-3 inches at 10yds and with the Gold Cup I can punch the numbers on the targets.

But I still think they are overrated. My USP 45 has everything I would ever want except for a super crisp trigger. Extended slide release, DA/SA, decocker, external safety, double stack, plenty of sight options.

When you come to 1911, that is the end of your choice. From that point on, you will buy only 1911s. It is a very good choice for RIA to be the first 1911. I know some men on this Calguns got more than 30 1911s.

Yup. And there's something to be said about just pulling the trigger and it going bang, vs. having to remove the safety first.

I'll just say yes.

You can ask any old man (holding a 1911) "what is that?" and he'll answer "A .45!" Try it out for yourself, i'm not lying.

Depends on your .45's main role
Range gun / home-defense: 1911

if its not a Colt, its a copy.
you can get a previously loved Colt for under 700 even in PRK and a used springfield for further under that and possibly a kimber for well under 1k if you shot around

i only have 6 colt 1911 so i am impartial

As much as I respect and adore 1911, I would rather have a Sig 220 SAO than any low end level/ mid end level 1911.

RIA 1911 owners have a high opinion of them. The Tactical model is on my wish list.

Is the 1911 the ultimate high god of all things .45? No, probably not. If it were there wouldn't be so much debate as to the fact. But is it one of the finest .45s available. You will do good to get a decent quality 1911, but what is the REAL judge of quality is whether YOU like to/can shoot it.

1911 is pretty sleek.. I just shot a couple of sub 1" groups from sandbags at 25 yards with bullets made of old wheelweights in the kitchen and 200 grain SWC at almost 1,000 fps.. I could do this because these guns love lead bullets and the 1911 has sucb a great trigger.

I love revolvers and put the 44 mag on the top of my list for must have handguns followed by a good 22 revolver or semi auto and a good 1911. I have a lot of handguns though.. from 22 to 38 to .357 to 45 to 44 mag. I like all my handguns to have an exposed hammer. I also like them to be steel.

As was stated above: Everyone should a 1911 .45 and a .357 Magnum revolver.

Is it the end all? No. But it is the very definition of .45. Modern technology has caught up, and surpassed it in some ways, but they are still very cool.

The design is OVER 100 years old. Remeber that it was ADOPTED in 1911. There were examples made years prior for testing and evaluation.

I have an RIA 1911 I bought for $399 last year. Good range shooter and hiking gun for sure. In fact it was far more reliable out of the the box than my SA (Springfield) Milspec 1911. SA needed a little filing on the extractor to eject and RTB. SA is a fine gun and now that it is reliable it is my comp and fun weapon. RIA is the best value you will find no doubt when it comes to an entry level 1911.

All that said, I am really a USP .45 guy and swear by them for all around performance and reliability.

If you are not religious about 1911s, try a SIG, try a Glock 21SF/30SF, try HK.

Forget about the guys who say "no there can be none other." Again, it is not faith that you're talking about although some people do seem to think that handgunning is a faith based activity.

Make up your own mind. I like my 1911s for the range, I enjoy shooting them and collecting them, but I'll pick up my "ugly" Glock 21SF in a defensive situation any day of the week.

The 45 ACP trail eventually leads to 1911 ownership.

I have purchased guns from most of the top manufactures including 45’s and for the most part I have been please with all of them. That being said, I enjoy my 1911’s far more than any other guns. For me they are more accurate and just feel right. When I open my safe 1911’s are the only guns I find myself picking and admiring, they put a smile on my face, no other gun does that for me.

The only problem with buying a quality 1911’s I have found is 1 will not be enough, I always have my next purchase in mind.

My advice, get 1 the odds are you will love it and become a big fan, if not they are an easy sell.

Lastly I am talking about my enjoyment, my CCW and go to guns are Glocks

I'll agree with the Senior Chief (always good policy)

I think people who select the .45ACP as their caliber of choice fall into two groups.

1. They go buy a Glock, build a shrine to St. Gaston on their gunsafe, and tell everybody who's interested in a .22 Single Six that they really should get a Glock.

2. People who do a lot of research & comparison. Even if they don't select a 1911 type (like me) for their first handgun purchase, : that slab sided hunk of history is always going to be in the back of their minds & one day...
