What it finally cost...Rem 700 in .223 (Up date, Trigger )
So last year when I was flush with cash I put together a Rem 700 in .223
Barrel..Lothar Walther..$488 Stock.. Mcmillen $896 3-5A adjustable Scope..Nightforce $1,780 5 X 22 X 56 Bi-pod..$77 Extended Bolt knob..$31 sling swivels.. $28 Receiver.. $500 Sling.. $13 Bottom metal..$200 Magazine (2) $180 Trigger..$200 Scope base..$116 Scope rings..$252 Total.......$4,761 Now the rifle is scary accurate, and it's obvious that you get what you pay for. Just wanted to give everyone an idea about cost Desert Camo is Rem 700 in .308

That is about what a custom rifle will cost, but add another, I would say $1-2K depending on the scope and action you get. The caliber doesn't actually matter with regards to the rifle, but does matter when it comes to ammunition costs.
In essence, as the OP mentioned, you get what you pay for. Expect to pay anywhere from $4,500 - $6,500 for most custom tactical, Benchrest or F-Class rifles.

I don't see a gunsmith fee in there.

Gun Smith
I think he charged me $100 to $150 to blue and install barrel. I did all the in-letting which took me forever.
On my next build ( and last one ) he will do the same plus the in-letting for barrel and lower metal. I have all the pieces, just need the barrel which I'm waiting to receive in 6.5 X 55 I'm not real good with the camera...I will have another old person come over who knows how to do it and take some pictures of my toys

Money ????
Actually I'm on my last build. Like I said just waiting on the new barrel from Lothar-Walther. I need to quit spending money like a drunken Sailor. I'm 69, single and on a fixed income. I thought about the 6.5 build 4 years ago and now it's almost reality.

Unless you have a set of asbestos suit cases, you can't take it with you.

600 yards
I have dope from 200 to 600 yards. Each time I moved the shot was deep into the X ring. I noted these scope adjustments and put them on the stock so there readily available

That scope is perfect for that build.
He can swap out the barrel and have a 6 Dasher or 243. Likewise he can put a 300 WSM barrel on it and shoot 1000 yard competition or put a 7 SAUM barrel on it and shoot steel out to a mile. Once you have the right setup you can swap bolts and barrels to create many combinations.

This kind of magnification usually reserved for special purpose builds that take you to further effective distance than .223 can, and that's what I meant by overkill. I see why you like this scope but it's fullest potential is in the magnum rounds. Your money is still well spent here and it's time you show us some hi-res pictures made by your DSLR camera.

If the barrel is long enough and he's shooting 77s or 80s, he can hit 900-1k reliably. Lots of people shooting 20+ magnification on the 1000 yard line the couple times I was there

!,000 yards
Not that it can't be done, but I have other rifles that are quite capable of doing 1,000 yards easily and those are the ones I would use. Rem. 700 in .308 which is all tricked out, and M1A which is more like a white Feather. I also have 6.5 X 55 swede coming, and that will be my new long range rifle. You need to remember that I live in Florida now. Not much 1,000 yard shooting here.

I also recently built a semi-budget-conscious Remington 700 in 223.
Cost me about $2600 including optics and tools (I already had the torque wrench). The nice thing about this setup, is that the MDT 223 magazines allow a cartridge OAL of 2.550" so I can load the new Nosler RDF 70 grain bullets longer and still feed from the magazine. I tried some AR-15 magazine length loads with these bullets and they suck.
I want to try 80 grain HBPTs loads too, but not sure if the 1-8" twist is fast enough. The Berger twist rate calculator is telling me 1-7.75" is ideal. |

I've seen high priced rifles shoot for ****. You should be thanking your smith that he did a great job on fitting that barrel to the receiver.

Huh? I've seen many competitive shooters with +20X optics on .22lrs which were intended to be (and are) shot offhand. There's nothing wrong with a little 22X optic on a .223 if it fits the intended use.

I have a 6x223 that I built to shoot 95gr SMK's which have the same BC/velocity as a 175gr 30 caliber SMK does from a 308. Identical exterior ballistics with less recoil/cost and longer barrel life due to using about half as much powder.

For some, the requirements or standards as you mentioned, are different. My standards would probably scare you. I replace barrels in my competition guns right around 1,000 rounds and a barrel will not see a regional, state or national match if it has more than 700 rounds.
