No, that's going to the extreme. Just order something like this, and you'll be fine:
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/298...rief-underwear

^ETA: There are only 3 available at that price!

If you find that too restrictive, I'd at least stick to a tactical jockstrap.

I intend on scaring the bad guy with my massive weaponry.

Then I'll take out my firearm.

What do you actually mean? Eye and ear protection should also be "common sense." They are made requirements at many ranges because sadly, not everyone has "common sense" and because of the grave harm (and resulting liability) that can come to someone not using such protections.

Not wearing clothing with crude verbiage/graphics and/or gang-wear in public (particularly where kids might be present) should also be "common sense", but that too is lost on many. For many it's a way to draw attention to themselves which they clearly crave, no matter how many people they might drive away from the range.

Same with things like closed-toed footwear and hats. It should be "common sense" to employ these articles too but many simply do not care or they simply don't know.

The "common sense" response on these matters all too often sounds like a lack of diligence/caring.

I would require hearing protection and some form of eye protection. If they wanna show up and shoot nude, well, they have to be physically fit. And that rule will not be strictly enforced. If they wanna go shirtless or barefoot, FINE by me. At least folks will know that it is a fun range that is not a fashion facist...

I'd appreciate it if Excelsior just posted a picture of himself at the range, so we would all have a model of how to dress. I am a novice with this type of stuff and would appreciate a demo. Does anyone know this guy in real life?

That's a very good question. The first thing would be specific colors for gangs operating in the local area. Local law enforcement does provide local businesses (such as dance clubs and bars) with intelligence on colors and other things (such as specific use of bandanna) and the clubs (as just one example) do make it part of their dress code.

You mean like allowing naked people to shoot at a range where kids could be present? Yeah, right. Helluva a straw dog.

What's the problem with posting #1? I should have included an options for closed-toed footwear but what else should have been different?

The thread crappers forever stuck at 8th grade maturity/intellect levels are going to do everything they can to bring attention to themselves and to derail threads no matter what the subject or OP by doing what they do -- crapping on threads. I don't know how many times I have done a Google search on something firearms related, it brings me to a Calguns thread, the thread has some great discourse early on until the thread crapper arrive. Pretty sad actually.

It's remarkable how much time and energy some of the thread crappers spend on threads doing nothing but crapping away and never adding any value. If this place was someplace like www.thehighroad.com they would have been banned long ago, but it's not.

That's why I add those pathetic souls to my ignore list.

It's interesting to note that about 5% fewer people feel eye protection should be mandatory than those who feel hearing protection should be mandatory. I would have guessed the two would be nearly identical.

"No gang attire" is also polling far stronger than I would have guessed although I do believe it would make a fine rule.

I thought a loin cloth and gstring were appropriate attire at a range. guess I was wrong.

Ok...this thread is already becoming a train wreck; but, I still want to chime in with my two cents.

At the range, I will wear whatever I please, thank you. While I understand the support for so-called "appropriate" shooting wear such as t-shirt, tennis shoes and jeans, that may or may not be what I am wearing when I need to draw my weapon.

Imagine that I just came from a meeting with a silk blouse, skirt and high heels. An attacker comes out from behind a car in the parking garage. Should I ask my rapist to hold for a moment while I change into something more sensible prior to pulling my CCW? OR should I be able and prepared to shoot in any outfit? You know, high heels throw off the balance of a regular shooting stance and a nice fitted blazer also impedes my ability to raise my arms to some extent. I need to know that stuff prior to my "big moment" - that's why I practice my shooting in whatever I think I need to practice in.

Hot brass? Please. I'm not a pansy. I once wore a rather sensible jeans, t-shirt and hoodie to the range and had the brass bounce off of the partition and go straight down the back of my hoodie. I have NO idea how I managed to do that; but, the cartridge rolled down my back and came to a rest on top of my bra strap. It then sat right there and sizzled into my back. Did I do the hot brass dance and muzzle sweep the room? No. I kept my focus and continued to shoot through the rest of my magazine, much to the amazement of all of the CalGuns people standing behind me. (And I had a rather sexy little burn mark in the center of my back for quite some time after that!)

So, while I understand the concern, I don't need well-meaning people trying to tell me that I shouldn't wear a tank top or shorts or what have you. The only thing I won't compromise on is eye and ear pro. I won't necessarily have either when I most need to shoot; but, I'm not going to practice without it.
