Hey Trap!

Just put this baby in jail, Model 12 with serial 1243570. Stamped on barrel (30") as having a "Full" choke - when I get her out of jail, will post pictures to confirm.

Thanks for all your work and contributions!

Dot, your Model 12 was made about Feb of 1949, with 62,180 made that year.

Woah, thanks for the fast response!

Didn't realize she was so old, almost as old as my Mosin. Gonna be my first shotgun. Was browsing over the standard 870's and 500's, and they just didn't have any soul compared to the M12. Thanks again!

If that's not a typo, I have to see that one!
Model 1897 serial numbers were a continuation of the Model 1893 that was discontinued in 1896 about serial number 34,050. So my educated guess is, you have a Model 1897 that was made in the later part of 1899, with 26,232 made that year.

yea, 83174, model 1897. It's a short barrel riot gun. Take down frame. Steel butt plate with no serrations.

I'll work on a pic.

My wife just inherited a bunch of old guns from her father. There was a Winchester side by side as well, but I don't have it here.

Airborne, Is the choke marked on the barrel? Barrel length? Front bead?

New to this forum so here's my question...
Tried to explore this in other locations but couldn't really find anything:

I'm about to acquire an 1894 (made 1923), Winchester, 30WCF, short barreled rifle. 15" (trapper).
I will need to get it certified by ATF to clear the NFA restrictions.
So, has anyone gone thru this process and is there a number to call in WV to get some direction on this. I understand that some of the process has changed recently.

The ATF has a list somewhere on their website of all the Trapper rifles that have been cleared. Curio and Relic List (SEC. III: Weapons Removed From The NFA As Collector's Items And Classified As Curios Or Relics Under The GCA is what you'll be looking for.
If yours isn't on the list, your first step is to see if a Cody letter states that the serial number was made with a barrel shorter than 16". Some were made at Winchester, but the info isn't in the ledgers. ATF has approved several of these.
First step is to authenticate.
Second is contact ATF for inspection/approval.
If it's good to go, it's added to the list by Make, Model, and Serial Number.
That's about all I can tell you on the process, my piggy bank has never been big enough to afford a Trapper.

I've checked the list and this one is not on it.
Cody can only give the date the serial number was applied NOT its configuration.

I think I'm at the second step...I'll keep check'n the web.

You'd be flabbergasted (in a good way) if I told you what I paid for this one
