That thing is bug city. If you want to experiment fine but I would not use it for antthing you care about.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/07..._whack_a_mole/

A number of nagging bugs have cropped up in the last few days that have some Windows 10 testers scratching their heads at just how an OS this raw can be considered production-ready.

In one case, testers who tried to uninstall programs using the Control Panel the customary Windows 8.1 method instead of the newer Settings->System->Apps & features method, Windows Explorer would crash and immediately restart.

Another reported Explorer crash is triggered whenever you try to enable or disable an active network connection.

Last I heard there were patches released for that, but since I was not an insider this time, I don't know for sure. I will know soon as I am downloading it right now.

Don't do it until a SP1 is in the install DVD you are planning to use...

I haven't downloaded yet, I'm going to wait awhile but Microsoft had a 1GB patch already so that should fix some of the issues.

I have a 2nd machine that is my security cam and music server. I will try the upgrade on it.

I never upgrade a production OS. New, bare metal install, from a fresh purchased CD/DVD. It is a pain to move data and re-install software but I treat any Windows setup as a slow self destroying OS. Drivers start causing problems for no reason. Programs start abending for no reason. Monthly Tuesday updates start causing problems.

So does it do the download automatically if the computer's turned on and you've reserved your update? I left my laptop and my workstation both turned on in the hopes that it would be downloaded by the time I get home today. I want to get the laptop going right away - I'll just do the update on that, make sure that things are good.

If it works with the software that I need for money-making, then I'll do a clean install on my workstation.

It downloads in the background, once done I think it'll prompt you to follow through with the installation... I'm currently at 93%.

I'll pass.. gotta be a damn good reason they want you to have it now - for free

Windows 10 Upgrades Cannot Be Stopped

But why would you want to resist Windows updates? Because updates are not always about improving customer experience. Notably updates can remove beloved features Microsoft deems it no longer wants to continue and they can also seed adware like the patch which has seen Windows 10 desktop ads pop-up on all Windows 8 and Windows 7 PCs.
as I said before, I ran the very stable xp pro all the way to the end, and I'm sticking to 7 pro since it has been good so far..

Mainstream Windows 7 Support Ends Today, But Don't Panic
Quote:
But as we saw with Windows XP, it can be difficult to get people to move on. Extended support for Windows XP ended on April 8, 2014. At the time, however, 27.69 percent of global PCs were still running the outdated OS, not to mention a businesses like hospitals and ATMs.

Windows 7 arrived in October 2009 and was heralded by then-CEO Steve Ballmer at a "simpler, faster" operating system. By and large, Windows 7 was well-received and is currently in use on 56.26 percent of global PCs, according to December stats from Net Applications.

Windows 8 has not been as successful, and is only in use on just under 19 percent of PCs, barely eclipsing XP at 13.57 percent. Mainstream support for Windows 8 ends on Jan. 9, 2018, while extended support is set to expire in 2023.

Windows 10 is now replacing Windows Hate (8). So what to do, other than continue running my collection of PC's on XP and 7? The answer was obvious; so I took a new blank HDD off the shelf, and swapped it into a spare AMD X4 965 machine with 32 gigs of memory, then installed the Linux Mint Rafaela 17.2 distro with the Cinnamon desktop.

Damn, if it didn't work. Booted up, ran the HDMI monitor, found my network, established an Internet connection and did most of what I wanted. Took a bit of fiddling with HideMyAss, but once figured out, it fired right up establishing an encrypted PPTP connection. Mint even notified me that system updates were available, then downloaded and installed them without a hitch - I remember a few Windows updates that scrambled functionality. Windows update = the reason that system restore and disk images were invented.

Seems Mint comes with about every program and geegaw I'd need, and it's fast - runs like the proverbial scalded rabbit. Sure it uses a console where you occasionally gotta type in commands, but I started with MS-DOS and learned that esoterica, so in time, I suppose I can learn the names of the new Linux gods and goddesses and the hieroglyphics that make them work. Imagine, me going over to the dark side, I must be loosing my mind. Bilbo Baggins was right, adventures make you late for dinner.

Mine still says it's not ready to go.

Doesn't even show signs of downloading, according to traffic monitors.

It will let you roll back in the settings, but a back up is always a good idea.

So installation went smoothly on my laptop at home but for some reason failed miserably on my throw away laptop, which has now been thrown away. Well not really but I have to have my brother look at it.

So far it's a nice set up and I'm having fun looking through it. One thing I didn't like was that it displayed recent files/folders that were accessed. Had a heck of a time figuring out how to disable that "feature."

7 does that too. Actually, I think every version of Windows has done it back to 95.

I'm happy about it for my kid's computer - his account is guest, and has no password.

My laptop is at 91% right now. My desktop ... going to probably wait until Friday at least. Maybe Saturday night.

I did not realize that. Maybe it wasn't as pronounced as it is with win10? In here you press the start button, file explorer and the window that pops up is populated with the most recent folders you have accessed and I think the last 20 files you have accessed. In a way that's a nice feature but I don't like it.

I had my laptop hard wired and it downloaded the files in like 30 minutes. I think installation took longer. Sucks that my other laptop died on my tho, but it was really old and I'm surprised it was still working, well at least until now.

Get it on the last day that it is free. That way you'll have all the known fixes. Got a new HP laptop a few months ago with 8.1 and Bing. I'm using Chrome. Might try the Explorer replacement if I do 10.

went quite painlessly on my laptop. I'll probably do my workstation tomorrow, maybe tonight. I'm almost hoping that Gotomeeting breaks though, so I can have a valid excuse to take Saturday off ...

Running 10 but feels slightly slower on boot up then 8.1. Gonna force windows maintenance to run maybe it just needs a good defrag and and a cleanup.

BEWARE!

Quote:
Really Microsoft?
You gotta be kidding me....
Starting today, Microsoft is offering most Windows 7 and Windows 8 users a free upgrade to the software giant’s latest operating system — Windows 10. But there’s a very important security caveat that users should know about before transitioning to the new OS: Unless you opt out, Windows 10 will by default share your Wi-Fi network password with any contacts you may have listed in Outlook and Skype — and, with an opt-in, your Facebook friends.
WHAT?
You got to be kidding me; oh yeah, Microsoft claims this is "securely done" but that is not the point. Many machines are connected to confidential WiFi networks such as corporate ones, even if they're personal computers, and not all corporate networks are 802.1x secured either.
Sending those credentials to your "friends" by default is an outrage.
Where did Microsoft get the idea that they had the right to steal the data (in this case, an encryption key) from your computer and give it to other people?

.

Make sure to check the security settings. There are lots of things turned on by microsoft that most will want to turn off. 10 is running good on my laptop.

Upgrade on my laptop was painless. Upgrade on the desktop needed a little more effort. Asus had released all new windows 10 specific drivers for my motherboard, so I had to install those and reboot four or five times before everything worked. 3 reboots were just for the realtek stuff.
