Default 45 LC loads for Bond Arms Derringer...

I tested 6 powders at a recent range trip and made notes of all the powders tested.

Looking for best upper and lower barrel grouping together.

Distance as tested. 20 feet to target.

Brass are all Starline 45LC brass.

Primers are all Winchester Large Pistol Primers.

Bullets are all 155 Grain SWC (Missouri Cast Bullet IDP #10 Groveless)

Pistol is Bond Arms Big Bear California Edition.

Powders tested were...

5.2 Grains Alliant e3 (My own load data...light starting load)

Notes - Accuracy is OK, some muzzle flash, very loud, and light recoil, little unburned powder in case, cases are very sooty on outside. Need to try heavier powder load. (Uncharted territory)

***

8.4 Grains IMR Target (Max Hodgdon load data)

Notes - Accuracy is OK, most muzzle flash of powders tested, very loud, and heavy recoil, no unburned powder in case.

***

7.9 Grain IMR Red (Max Hodgdon load data)

Notes - Accuracy is OK, large muzzle flash, very loud, and heavy recoil, and lots of unburned powder in case.

***

9.0 Grains HP-38 (Max Hodgdon load data)

Notes - Accuracy is Excellent, some muzzle flash, little unburned powder.

***

10.5 Grains W572 (Max Hodgdon load data)

Notes - Accuracy OK, lots of unburned powder left in case. Some muzzle flash.

***

8.5 Grains Trail Boss (Max Hodgdon load data)

Notes - Accurate shooting, no unburned powder in case. Large muzzle flash.

***

Of all the powder I tested, first choice is HP-38 (9.0 Grains), second choice is to work up higher Alliant e3 load to limit soot, third choice is Trail Boss (8.5 Grains).

Here are the selected targets from powders shot and group size. This is quick fire succession both rounds fired within 1 sec on target.

Alliant e3 (5.2 Grains) very first target shot. 8.75 group @ 20 feet.

Hodgdon HP-38 (9.0 Grains) second target shot. 3.5 group @ 20 feet.

Winchester W572 (10.5 Grains) third target shot. 3.625 group @ 20 feet.

Hodgdon Trail Boss (8.5 Grains) fourth target shot. 2.25 group @ 20 feet.

Reason I choose Alliant e3 powder is it is the fastest powder I have on hand, very short barrel on this pistol, needs to burn the powder efficiently in the barrel. I have shot 45 ACP and 38 Special loads with this Alliant e3 powder, and like it a lot.

My choices for my final 3 powders are subjective to me, based on muzzle flash, felt recoil (manageable), and accuracy. These targets were quick fire shots on target. I can do better with some practice, just eliminating powders that won't work for the derringer. I did test all the same rounds in a Ruger New Vaquero in 45LC with 5.5 barrel, all rounds with powder loads above were very accurate in the 5.5 barrel.

No chrono numbers for this range trip.

I'd think the "human accuracy" in this test to be bigger variable than the ammunition.

I' find the most accurate in slow fire, then develop technique to accommodate rapid fire.

Very interesting stuff. That's a neat little gun.

Is it easy enough to hold on to the gun?

Have you considered using 45 S&W Schofield brass?

The case is a lot shorter and this may be good in the short barrel.

I'm not familiar with the powders you have tried but less case capacity should be more efficient at burning the powder.

Just something else to try if you feel the need to experiment some more.

Thank you for your interesting post and insight.
