Of the three you listed, the XD9. if you don't need it right away, Springfield Armory frequently runs specials where you purchase the handgun and it comes with a few extra magazines.

1.highpoint c9 150-180 bucks, ugly as sin not very comfortable but gets the job done, built like a tank demolition ranch tried everything to kill one but kept going until he shot it with the 50bmg
2. sdve 9 Smith and Wesson roughly 350 bucks trigger sucks but it works and looks way better than hi point
3.sig 2022 around 550
4.glock 19 hard to find but expect to more than likely pay over 550 for one they are in very high demand

All the suggestions are the right gun for SOMEONE - but maybe not a good fit for YOU. It's like choosing running shoes by polling marathon runners.
I have several 9mm pistols, and prefer my RIA 1911 for pure range enjoyment, with a CZ 75SA and a couple Glocks often tagging along. My primary EDC is a Shield9, with five Glocks (19, 26,30, 30SF, and 36) also on my CCW. My garage hideout is a SP2022. All of these shoot reliably with HP ammo, and hit where I aim.
I've also shot some that I just didn't care for: Ruger LC9, Beretta's 92FS and PX4 Storm, all the XD line, and the CZ 75B. All functioned fine, were accurate enough, and have loyal followings among my friends and family - but don't fit me in some regard.
Holding a gun before you buy is better than not, but it's like trying on shoes without lacing up and walking around in them. What works best for me is not a reliable predictor of what will work best for you.

All that being said, if I were limited to a single 9mm pistol, it would be a Glock 19. It does everything well for me, even though it's not my first choice for any particular task.

HiPoint
You can get one of each in 9,40 and 45 and 100 rounds for each and still come in below $550

1. RIA 1911 45 usually the mid range one with reasonable upgrades is $500-550,

2. Tauras tracker 38/357 always below 500. Or should be.

3. Rami 9mm rarely below 550 these days however.

This thread/poll has really gotten me interested in the XD.

Based on my research, the gun is a re-branded, Croatian made HS2000 which is currently the standard issue sidearm for the Croatian military and police forces- as well as for 10 other major national military/police organizations.

I keep reading that the high bore axis can cause muzzle flip/excessive recoil but after shooting one I found the recoil/muzzle flip to be better than a Glock 19- could this be due to the heavier nose design or slightly heavier weight in general?

It seems that the XD9 also has a metal trigger and sights and more importantly a fully supported barrel ramp and chamber- which the Glock doesn’t have.

Maybe these are all reasons why the XD is leading this poll at the moment?

For first time buyers I recommend a Springfield XD first due to the durability, weight, simplicity, and reduced muzzle flip. That said outside of Covid, pricing for Springfield XDs are quite reasonable, especially if you are patient and purchase during company promotions often called, "Gear Up". Often multiple magazines and a storage bag or hard case are included. Cheers!

Side note, rarely have seen a CZ SP-01 under $500 sale especially since the MSRP is higher. Reference https://cz-usa.com/product/cz-75-sp-...ts-18-rd-mags/

Id have to say

Smith & Wesson SD9VE

Glock 19 or 17

Ruger SP101 (revolver)

CZ SP-01

My first choice for a new shooter would be the SD9VE. Its a great pistol in the 350-400 range. Priced well below any Glock and shoots just as good and just as reliably. They also look better than a Glock.

Im not a big fan of Glocks myself but even I cant deny a Glock 19 or 17 would be a good first handgun

Cant discount the revolver. The ruger SP101 is a good place to start. Small frame but a stout little revolver. Id recommend the 3" if you want to go that route. Its a 357 magnum. Though 357 magnum in this particular revolver will be to much for a new shooter. It shoots 38 special well.

Had to include the CZ SP-01. Im a huge CZ fan, but I put it last on the list because its an SA/DA with a safty. I just hesitant to recommend a gun with a Safety to a new shooter. SP-01 is a little under 700 so might be out of your budget. You arent going to find one right now anyway.

If you dont already own a Sem-Auto handgun. Especially 9mm, 40 SW, 45. You may as well just let go of the idea of owning one now. The store shelves are completely wiped out of Semi-auto pistols. Revolvers are still in abundance though.

Another vote for the S&W SD9VE, especially during the current panic. The reasons Diversity210 listed are on point, expecially when compoared to the Glock. To quote Paul Harrell: "This one fits my hand better than this one."

Now, if it was pre-panic pricing, I would have suggested getting the Glock 17 or 19 first and deciding first-hand if it is worth the hype.

The Smity Shield in 40 if you can find it. Then spend another $160 on a 9mm conversion barrel and a 9mm magazine, and you have great little handgun that shoots two very popular handgun chamberings.

All anyone needs is a Hi Point C9. Anything else is just wasting money, because a C9 does everything any other gun does.

I love my PX4. DA/SA takes some getting used to, but if he’s a new shooter less habits to break. Ergonomics work great for me, but it’s thick for some people. I’m 800 rounds in without a malfunction, it’s very easy to clean, reliable, affordable, and looks awesome.

It’s not my favorite gun, that goes to my 1911 or Buckmark depending on the day, but it is the one I trust for home defense and keep in the night stand.

I was going to suggest the 92FS as well since they're usually around $599 new. This was my first handgun and I love it, but only after adding a D hammer spring and a Beretta kit that turned it into a decocker only. That's adding an additional $50, bringing the total now to $650.

Iím still jaded from when Turners listed that Beretta 92 for like $450 in their Spring flyer, and then Covid shutdowns and panic started happening. They shut down operations and when they reopened, the Spring flyer and its prices were no more ☹️. Was gonna be all over that for that price.

Yeah, got lucky and they honored the flyer prices for the first week on whatever was still in stock; got the kimber they were using as a door buster. After day three, just about everything was sold out.

I donít think you would have been happy with the Beretta though. It wasnít a 92, but instead this odd M9 commercial model. Similar design, but everything is polymer instead of steel, which is why itís $200 less than a 92.

Any specifics? I know the Sigma/SWVEs had really bad triggers, but seemed plenty reliable. The SDVE really only ever gets complaints about the trigger, which has an Apex upgrade available.

I ask because I've never heard complaints about the Smith semi auto's reliability.

Depends if you mean best or "best on roster?"

Best on roster is probably a Gen 3 Glock 19

Best overall would be the M&P of your caliber choice in the 4" - 5" range (ie not a Shield). I say this because I personally hate Glocks. Good guns, just not my cup of tea. But if I needed a first gun in this godforsaken 2A wasteland of a state, I'd learn to like Glocks since your options are really limited.

saw a cz rami in a store today, pretty cute little 9mm. ain’t got no time for another gun, but if i did, it would make a cool little all around self-defense handgun. i’m sure you could find it on sale for $550 or there about. I think it had night sights too.
