7.62X54R Match ammo... call me crazy!
So I have been thinking about pulling the surplus ammo i have apart... and replace the projectile with 124GR Zmax bullets and then reloading it back into the case with varget powder.
Think this is going to make match ammo? and is the corrosive primer going to ignite the varget?

It has been done before. Match ammo... depends on what kind of match you're shooting for. Only way to find out is try. You're going to have to tune the load to your rifle. Shouldn't have any ignition problems unless the primers won't ignite the normal powder.

"Mexican Match" sometimes produces good results, but sometimes it does not. I tried it with Federal bulk .223 and it went boom, but my own handloads with better brass were much better.
Experiment and see for yourself. Or just reload with good brass. |

I just wanted to see if I can produce good results, seems like a really fun idea to try

I load 54r with all kinds of projectiles. 311 boolets, 308 projectiles, lead cast and even .32acp pistol bullets. They all fit my mosin bore. Best result is with cast with low fps, second is .32acp with 1" at 50 yards concidering surplus is getting 4" at 100, that's pretty good.
As for your question, I've done it before and had a little better results then surplus. But different gun different eating habbits. Good luck! And slug your bore first. Lol. |

I used to do it all the time. Pulled the Surplus bullets and found that the powder charge varied about 2 grains. I reused the surplus powder, just measured it out so they were all the same. I mostly used Hornady .310" 123gr soft points. I would get 1 MOA groups out of my Mosin Sporter. I also had good results with 175gr SMK's and 165gr TSX's for hunting.

yeah I have some 175gr SMK left over from my .303 brit reloading days, I figure I would give those a try and see what happens.

A lot of factors to consider..but calling it 'match' might be a stretch.
Yes the primer will ignite the Varget. You can make a more consistently measured load for sure. The 123gr projectile is .310, so your bore dia is a consideration. What rifle are you sending these through? The groups will likely open up the longer distance you go with the lighter bullet. For true 7.62x54r "match" the 200gr Lapua D166 bullet is unparalleled. Good luck .. show the results

I am not yet done with my rifle yet, its a M91/30. I am cutting the barrel down to 22inch and then 11 degree crown. Free floating the barrel bed the action. Once I am done with this project I'll post some results and see what happens.

TOP TIP: When pulling the bullets from military rounds, you will want to seat the bullets down farther into the brass before you use a kinetic puller. This will break the weather seal (aka "Shellac") lose from the bullet and make bullet pulling much easier. Quote:
