They are no longer being made. That's why the one's you see in stores have gone from $99 to $250+.

Marlin still has them on their website because they do in fact plan on making them again. But when Remington bought Marlin, they closed the factory in Connecticut in 2010 and moved production to New York and Kentucky. They have not yet begun producing the Papoose. Who knows when they will start up production again.

Also, the Marlin firearms being produced at the new plants are of much lower quality compared to those that were produced in CT. So even if the Papoose is manufactured again, expect a lower quality product.

Why on earth would a "survival rifle" have BIG RED LETTERING on it?

It is not waterproof! Yes it will float if dropped in the lake but water will make its way inside. Water resistant enough for most though.
Just saying.

I don't own a AR-7 so when I wrote it was waterproof I was going off the literature from the Henry website. If your stock is not waterproof you may want to contact Henry and let them know it is defective.

Henry now makes an awesome AR-7, which doesn't jam much at all (not any more than an actual AR-15), is accurate, and is made to a very high standard with quality material.

I personally like the rifle, except for the fact that magazines are expensive and nobody makes reliable hi-caps for them.
I got rid of my Henry AR-7 because, it was a POS. I hate parting with .22lrs but, the Henry is the only one which I never had any sellers remorse after parting with it. Hell, I got rid of that and still have a few RG revolvers. That should tell you something.

I am telling you guys. The things are built like tanks. Very small tanks. I would have no problem using one as my everyday gun if I put a scope on it. Even with the open sights you can usually tag critters out to about 40 yards.

I like the over-unders that shoot .12ga and .223 or larger like the MP94 or others. They are do-all guns that can take small game without destroying too much meat, and a great shotgun that will take anything from #8 bird shot to slugs. They're good at just about everything.

Well, there is one up here in Nor-Cal in the River City Gun Exchange for $250. Or, you can go to local guns shops and cruuuuise or just ask em to get one for ya. I've had good luck just asking em to get me whatever I'm looking for.

But that's already a

I don't have a Savage 42. I own several variations of its predecessor the Savage 24. Here is a picture of them.

This is a picture of the new Savage 42. It is a new model so availability may be an issue.

Does anyone know what a New In Box (red zippered bag) In a marlin box, never fired, Blue steel with 3 new magazines, Marlin Papoose is worth?

I haven't seen any for sale in many years.

Pick up a cricket 22 just for the fact that they are $100. Small, light, perfect for kids or popping small game on a camping trip. You can throw one under the seat with a brick of ammo and it will be there when needed.

I love my Papoose, but would grab an M6 in a heartbeat. My buddy has one and I love it.

Hard to find and expensive though

You seem to know a lot about the Papoose. Do you know what year a stainless 70PSS with a red case might be? I thought all the recent ones came with blue cases.

I've been trying to buy a mint one for a few months. Even for $300+ it's not easy.

I'll play the AR7 Game. I have one and its just great. Now its 3/2 in favor of it. So there!

Most of the people who slam AR7 never owned one. Im in a AR7 group online and there are constant newcomers. The basic newcomer believes AR7 is the same as anything else and straight off buys "Cletus' Home Sewn Something Close to .22 Ammo" at $1.99 per 1000 rds and then comes back and cries in his beer for a month. Then for another month threatens that all sorts of evil should befall Henry soon. Eventually he gets sorted out on CCI Minimags and lo and behold, here he comes with, "Hey, not a bad little shooter!!!" End of story.

Because it's a "survival rifle" and not a tactical weapon. Those "big red letters" help it stand out from the background for a quick grab and I doubt the squirrels/rabbits/etc will even notice.

Sorry. Can't help you about the red vs blue case. I was interested in buying a Papoose and began to wonder why I couldn't find any. The only one I found was $250 and I remembered about a year earlier they were all over the place for $99. So I began my research and found out what had happened with the move. So I'm not an expert on Marlin's or Papoose's, I just did a little digging to find out what was going on.

Any ideas or inputs? Thanx.
Either the Marlin 70PSS or the 10/22 TD would be my recommendation. Given that you have a 10/22 I would buy the TD so you can use the same magazines.

I have one of the 10/22 TD rifles, great little gun, as accurate and reliable as the regular 10/22, and breaks down small enough to fit in the trunk of my bike.

I agree. To me, a survival rifle needs to be accurate, rugged, and reliable. As much as I love .22LR semis, I can't honestly say I've seen a single one that comes close to even the cheapest bolt gun for those three qualities.

I did have a Charter Arms AR7 about 30 years ago and to call it junk would be an insult to landfills worldwide. I've been told the Henry version is improved but it would have to be really really improved before I'd consider it. The problem with the Early AR7 was not build quality, it was design. Since, at least from what I see, the design is the same, I seriously doubt the claims of it being better. I could be wrong of course. This rifle design has been sold to several different manufacturers who all failed to make it reliable. Henry is only the latest. As another poster said earlier, it's the one and only gun I've owned that I was NOT sad to see go away.

I always thought it was a great idea and would truly like to see one work but from my own experience and from what I've read here and elsewhere, I'm not at all convinced Henry has done any better.

I just DROSed a Henry AR7 yesterday when I picked up my 1911. I already have the All Weather and Take Down Rugers. I actually liked the front site, but the plastic stock made it feel like a kids toy overall. I discovered that it can be stowed with a mag in the receiver so you actually have room for three mags total. I read a lot of online reviews and it is a truly hate it or love it gun. Mainly hate it.

If you mean old Marlin 70P with a wooden stock, I've seen them much more often than 70PSS on gunbroker while I was looking for 70PSS. They're a little cheaper than 70PSS, so I guess 70P would be $250-300.

10/22 TD is nice, but it's bulkier and weighs 1.5 pounds more than the 70PSS.

I think the last Papoose from a gun store was sold like a year ago. I've been hunting for a mint 70PSS online for months. Finally found a NIB one out of state. If everything goes well, I'll get it in a couple of weeks.

Remington used to sell them under their banner. My step son bought one and I'm pretty impressed with the quality.

If you are thinking "survival rifle" not only should you concider size but also weight.
A R 10/22 with Tactical Solutions 16-1/2" Aluminium fluted barrel and folding stock would
be a very compact, light weight package. ( Cal legal??) because of OA length, don't know.
You already have R 10/22 so know the strengths/weakness, no learning curve.
I have a R 10/22 TD. Like it alot. But, no light weight either. Would not want to haul it around all day along with a bunch of other stuff on by back.
