Generally it depends on the type of magazine. Box magazines are designed around a specific round, like .22LR. Tube magazines can fit many different lengths of rounds, typically .22LR and shorter versions. Tube magazines can be found on lever guns, bolt guns, and semi-autos. Some guns may not be able to feed the shorter rounds from the magazines though, so check with the manufacturer.

Marlin Model 60 is a tube fed semi-auto. Pre 1986 versions hold 18 rounds, later models hold 14 rounds. Great little rifle, accurate out of the box. Very little after market upgrades other than triggers, trigger guards and stocks. Very dependable rifle, about 12 million have been sold.

The model 60 Marlin will only cycle long rifle cartridges. You can shoot shorts or longs but only by manually feeding them. I had one back in the late 80's and it worked great that way, but a pain in the keister to load one at a time. I have a couple of old savage bolt guns with a tube mag that will feed all three also.

Besides lever actions and bolt actions, pump-action .22's often accept a wide variety of .22

I usually see the older rifles that can use most ammo types. I just sold a Win 290 that shoots LR and Long. I have a Rem that shoots short, Long, and LR. However, a friend's new Marlin XT-22 that shoots short and LR.

I have an old Winchester 190 that accepts short long and lr. It's a semi auto tube. But it only really feeds lr reliably. With the others I get jams, ftf, fte and stovepipes. The great thing about it is I can get about 16 rounds of lr in the tube!

They also usually have mag tube capacity over 10 rounds.

My Remington 510-X single shot and Marlin 81-DL tube magazine rifle both take .22 short, long, or long rifle. With .22 shorts, the Marlin holds something like 20+ rounds in it.

Most semi-auto won't cycle the Aguila Colibris. And Colibri suggests against using them in rifle barrels because they might get stuck, although some people use 'em in their semi-autos and just hand-cycle the action.

I have an ancient (pre WWII) savage 6 that will cycle Remington HV .22 shorts in semi-auto. If it does not cycle operate the charging handle and cycle it manually.
The Savage 5 and its derivative the Stevens Springfield 86 will also digest .22 shorts with no issue. The Mossberg 44 came with a screw in the magazine to allow cycling of shorts through the rifle. I know for certain my Henry pump action older round barrel will not deal with .22 shorts. High standard did make a "short kit" a replacement slide magazine and barrel set up for .22 shorts often used for rapid fire pistol competition. Ed |
