Default Scope on 20" A2 rifle fixed "handle"

I've seen red-dot optics/reflexes mounted atop the fixed handles of carbines to aid in cqb-type scenerios/drills and I understand its purpose.

Since a 20" rifle is not really well suited for cqb and is more suited for non-cqb distance work, would a rifle scope work mounted atop its fixed handle....or would that be like pissin into the wind? Id like to be able to "see" my intended target beyond 200 yards.

I've seen rifle scopes mounted on flat top ARs, but I don't have a flat top. Im thinking about the purchase of a Mk AR scope, low height rings, and a mount for the handle. Will the rifle scope be too high on the handle? Thanks for the input!

dont do it, be a better shooter and use the iron sights like it was intended.

if you want a carbine, get a carbine with a non zoom sight.
if you want to shoot with a scope build/buy a rifle made for a scope.

if you want some examples click some of my links in my sig.

I already have a flat top carbine. I've seen rifle length flat top ARs with rifle scopes and buis. The question is whether or not mounting a rifle scope on a rifle length AR with a fixed handle would work as well as the optics work atop the fixed handles of carbines.

Btw, the 20" A2 rifle and mid-50s eyeballs are already in my possession....I just wanted to know if there was a way for me to make hitting my target easier by adding to what I already have.

As long as you can find an adapter that fits into the sighting groove nice and tight it will work fine. I haven't seen many that work all that well, though.
You could also just get one of those little 3 or 4x scopes that was designed to be mounted up there. I don't recall the original manufacturer of those things, but I know that BSA and Barska both make their own version of it.

There are also the little mini ACOGs that are designed to be mounted in there, but those are a pretty penny.

Here are some mounting options, and they also sell that little 4x scope for $70.

Good luck!

Primary Arms just released their new 3x scope model for the AR. It has a removable mount which when removed allows an A2 handle mount.

Thank you...I think that shorty would work well on my fixed carbine. Nice options and reasonable prices!

Nice equipment. I'm leaning toward an EOTECH 512 for my flat top carbine. That stag6hl looks baddasss!!!!

I have some really nice AR-15 carry handle one piece low profile scope mounts on my web site for $22 and you can add a 4 power scope for $20 more. Great deal and it will be at the right height for a good cheek weld.

Only problem with the Primary Arms sight is that it has a VERY short eye relief. So if you're going to have a regular A2 stock, you may not be pleased. I just spent a few days with the Burris version and while it's a very nicely made piece, I just couldn't deal with the eye relief. And that was on a carbine with a collapsible stock.

Yep I agree and when I was shopping for ACOGs their eye relief avg. around 2". How do the military use the ACOGs w/ such short eye relief? I liked the 2x20 but it was only 2.1" eye relief and even on a flattop it seemed kinda short? The longest eye relief ACOG was the 1.5x24 at 3.6". That was one reason I didn't get one yet.

I had a TA01 mounted on a flat top. Yes the eye relief is short, but with such minimal recoil, it's manageable. It's worth it in my opinion for such a kick **s crystal clear, durable optic.

If mounting on the carry handle, don't forget the cheek riser.

Well, from what I can tell by looking at pictures and talking to friends who were issued them in the Marines, they have to resort to using a bladed stance while standing with only the bottom part of the stock resting on your shoulder, which doesn't seem very practical. On the other hand, it works very well when shooting from the prone position. It's definitely not a CQB/gunfighter optic, that's for sure. I don't think I would have one on a 20" rifle with a full stock. The eye relief is more manageable on a carbine with a collapsible stock from what I could tell when I tried it. That was why I went ahead and ordered a TA31RCO-M4 model. with that set-up, you can still play commando at the range and square up to your targets when you get bored shooting farther out.

I'm leaning toward a rifle scope (think MK AR scope) on my fixed handled 20-incher that I will use for paper punching and metal munching. Sure there may be better rifle setups for this type of shooting, but this is all I have for now. Trigger time is trigger time and I'm pretty sure I have the patience for it. If it doesn't work...oh well...I'll just shoot it within the rifle's (better than me I'm sure lol) and my capabilities with naked irons and naked eyes and let it be what it is, no biggie. I just wanted to get some feedback to have an idea what to expect before I buy the scope.

Mounting a scope on top of the carry handle will work fine, BUT it will screw up your cheek weld when shooting prone and make you push your head fully upright "prairie dog" style. Not a great thing for consistency of eye position behind the scope. A cheek piece on the stock can help correct this.

The Mark AR is a wonderful scope for the money. I always say it's like having a little high def tv right in front of your eye. I have a 3-9x with mil dot reticle and can't tell a difference between it and something that costs $500-$600 more. It is truly a great scope. The BDC turret works as advertised with the prescribed ammo, so I have I have it sighted for that, but use it mostly to shoot 69gr stuff. I can't say enough good things about that scope.
It also has a very generous eye relief, so it will work well with your set-up.

Solve your problems with a barrel wrench, change the 20 inch barrel onto the flattop and the scope pad is there. Those 50 aged eyes if like mine chase 60 way to quickly. Put the shorter barrel on the A2 and make that the carbine style.
Now go get a good 3x9 or better for the flattop and have at it.
