I got a new Wavian NATO can and some Stabil. I'm guessing the can was pretested by the factory because it gives off a fuel type odor when I open the lid.

So what did you guys do when you first got a new can? Did you just fill it up and that's it?

You may be smelling residual vapors from the coating the inside of the can was sprayed with. Any factory testing would be done with a method that does not involve fuel or flammables. Fill it with fuel and you're good to go. Of course, add a stabilizer for longer storage or rotate monthly.
