Default Remington 870 wood birdshead grip( update final product)

I cut down a Remington 870 wood stock to make a birdshead grip, now I'm not sure how to mount it. The bolt it came with is way to long and since cutting the stock the hole in the grip for the screw is to small for the washer to go into. I'll get some pictures of it up soon. Anyone have any ideas how to go about mounting to the receiver?

Counterbore the stock to fit the washer and an allen bolt of the correct length...or maybe countersink the hole to take a flathead allen?

ETA...Cancel the flathead idea...too much chance to split the grip if tightened too much.

You could also get a piece of threaded rod to fit the gun, countersink the stock, and use a black-finished acorn nut for attachment...

Pics of the finished grip would be super

hth

Here's a few pictures it's not done yet. Do I need to use the factory washer or can I get a smaller one, the factory looks like the hole would need to be way to big for the grip.

it's not great I only had a old hack saw and a dremel to do the work with

this is the factory washer, hole looks to be countersunk already but its not

I've stripped all the finish off the grip and forend and getting ready to refinish them, but when it comes to Counter boring I'm concerned with the lack of "meat" at the top of the hole. this is where I need some help at you guys have any ideas how to solve this

I would use a drill press and a Forstner (sp?) bit...the Forstner locates itself by its outside diameter...normal drills locate by their centers.

I like the idea of a metal bushing epoxied for strength. You can use any washer you want, obviously fitted to the bolt or threaded rod, and the screw or nut diameter you need.

Nice work so far.

I like this idea I've been trying it with wood doweling but every time I sand it to fit the grip hole I end up with a tapper and one end is loss. Maybe aluminum is the way to go, what would I use to bond it to the wood?

Plain old epoxy. preferably the 24 hour stuff. But in a pinch 1 hour stuff would work as well.

Slower cure makes for a stronger resin so get the slow stuff or if you really want it in there get some Brownell's Acra glass or some marine tex. Same 24 hour cure but strong as Iron.

Cool thanks again, I think I'm gonna go with the marine tex. I got a wood doweling to size with a hole drilled through it. I seen marine tex can be sanded so I can make a pocket for the receiver stud since I'm not sure how long it will be.

Did you ever get this thing done?

I just cut mine and now I'm in the same spot of trying to figure out what to epoxy in there to run the screw through.

A little more progress here.

Got the new shotgun the other night and put the 18" barrel and mocked the birdshead grip on it.

Then I did this last night

I picked up this neat little Magpul rear reciever sling mount for their SGA stock which is actually pretty cool.

Then I had to modify the part of the stock that attaches to the receiver

looking really good! I think the wood with the magpul sling mount is rad, but wouldn't it bite your hand? Likewise with the long shell holder. I put an 8 rounder on my Mossberg (with a regular stock) and it JUST clears if I grip it a certain way.

I'm not sure if I have the guts to do it, but I wonder what one of those Magpul stocks cut down (like your wood one is) would look like. I'm considering it after seeing how good someone's AOW looked with the Magpul forend on it, instead of a speedfeed bird head grip. Lotta $$$ to experiment with though, and I couldn't find anyone else that had done it. I've never looked at the inside of the Magpuls so I'm not even sure if it's feasible. Now if I could only find one with some damage I wouldn't feel so bad about hacking away.

Anyway, sorry for the mini-thread-jack. Looks great, keep up the good work!

the magpul sling mount looks KILLER on there. I was thinking about doing it to mine also, may have to now. I pick up my 870 AOW on the 23rd so I'll be able to finally post some pictures of it.

I'll be honest on the magpul sling mount. I wish it pointed the other direction with the way it feels on my hand. I'll have to see when I actually shoot it.

On their website they show it mounted both ways but it's just not possible.

Nicoman, I'll get that measurement for you later today.

I'm also not sold on the 7 shot shell holder. it looks and feels kind of bulky and thats without shells in it. I might just put a 4 shot one on there? I can't decide.

Not anything special this weekend. I finally got the wood dowel done at work on Friday and epoxied it in on Saturday night.

On Sunday I went to the hardware store to get a shorter bolt/screw to hold the birdshead grip but they didn't have anything the length I needed. It was a 1/4-28 screw and I had a die at home so I just cut the original stock screw down and re threaded it.

Probably threaded longer than it needed to be but it won't hurt anything
