Default Winchester 1883 Hotchkiss Military Musket

I pulled this out to take pictures and thought I'd just put them here. You don't see the 1883 too often, much less in military configuration, much less in original and new out of the crate shape. Hope you enjoy.

First time I've ever seen pictures of this rifle. What caliber is it? Does it fire metal cartridges? What a fine specimen. Thanks for sharing it.

It is a .45-70. It was obsolete as soon as it was made which is why it sat at Winchester for 20 years before being shipped out. It most likely went to a CA NG unit and sat there for years.

That bolt looks suspiciously like a mosin bolt, is there any design connection?

Perhaps a very little, but there is no bolt safety or locking lugs on the bolt head like a mosin.

I had no clue the condition that was in! Even the color case still looks fresh! There was only 84,591 of those made, I'd have a real hard time letting that one go!

It just sits in my safe and it is in too good of condition to shoot. If I had unlimited $$ I'd keep it, but there are other things I'd rather add to my collection.
