A Good Week For Some Hard To Find Milsurps
With the new year, I set some modest goals to pick up a few select pieces along the C&R genre. Being way more picky these days than the "willy nilly buy everything and find out later if you like it" phase. With just a sliver of additional sophistication I set out to find a few things that are somewhat uncommon.
I did well on pricing and linked up with good folks so these deals were a pleasure. Two of the three are in my possession and the third has been paid for and am just awaiting the brown happy van... 1. Chinese Type 53 All Matching These are everywhere and cheap if you don't mind beaters and mixmasters, which still make great shooters. I wanted something collectible and i think this fits the bill. The pics tell the story, but the bore is clean, nice crown, the stock is unmessed with, and free of cracks or repairs. No corrosion or issues anywhere. Everything is just "correct." The cleaning rod seems too short, but that is an easy fix. The action is silky smooth. Last edited by Bobby Ricigliano; 01-28-2017 at 11:14 PM.. |

Yugoslavian M24 Mauser:
The stock is a little rough, but all the stock cartouches are correct. The stock is stamped matching along with all the other parts. The non numbered matching parts all have the same proofs. Aside from the stock, the metal is perfect. The bore is excellent. these pre 24/47's are hard to find and harder with matching parts. It came with a nice but incorrect leather 1903 style leather sling which I will rehome on an american milsurp. Pic #1 appears to show a mismatched handguard (seller's photo) but when I got the rifle it looks to match nicely. What looks like a dark gouge on the left side of the stock is just part of the grain. Other than typical use and age, the wood is great. One small chip near the recoil lug, otherwise no cracks, splits, repairs, or fit issues. Last edited by Bobby Ricigliano; 01-28-2017 at 11:45 PM.. |

Russian 1954 Izhevsk SKS
OK these are teaser pics, as I have not received the rifle yet. I have a lot of SKS rifles which are my #1 all time milsurp interest. I have never had an Izhevsk and this one came up for sale right as I happened to have a bit of disposable income available. Kismet, komrade? The price was definitely right and the seller had the wisdom to preserve the KBI box, manual, etc. without ever firing it. This looks like a promising investment grade milsurp, and I will post more pics once it arrives. Last edited by Bobby Ricigliano; 01-28-2017 at 11:40 PM.. |

Great scores Bobby
That Type 53 is exceptional. I sold off my non matching last year to make room for one like that. Still at the top of my list and haven't found one yet. That SKS is a gem as well. I had my finger on the trigger button for sure on that one but had a K98 inbound and had to restrain myself. Great deal and I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. I know what you mean too about the "buy everything and find out later if you like it" phase. I've only been collecting a few years and had my 03 for a year now and I'm already starting to feel like Last edited by huntingsocal; 01-29-2017 at 9:16 AM.. |

As silly as it seems, I wondered if some are floating around with faked matching bolts, especially since it would nearly double the price. I knew this T53 was a good one, but when I picked it up the rifle was bouncing around loose in an oversized box. One end had opened and the muzzle was exposed. Through divine intervention it was somehow undamaged. Just in case any of you guys encounter this, I got some flak from the clerk at the Fedex store and he said "for future reference we cannot hold firearms." I advised him that it was sent from a Fedex store to another Fedex store. I then asked to see the policy which affirmed his statement. As usual, it could not be found, so the story changed to "well our management is just cracking down on this." I said thanks and left with the box. The moral of the story is not about being a jerk to the employee, but I have seen the same FUD at USPS and UPS too. I have received guns and ammunition from this same location and will continue to do so until I see policy stating otherwise. |

Nice finds Bobby.
The T53 is much nicer than the mismatched $99 ones Omega just sold. That's for sure. Glad to see you found a Yugo M24. A very nice one. All matching are tough to find. The Russian SKS definitely looks top notch. Tough to stick to just the French and Norwegian Mausers. Been there myself just recently as well. Not enough of them out there. So I went and bought 4 FN-49s and trying to buy 2 more. It is somewhat of a sickness. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk |

Nice scrounging BR. I can't bring myself to thin out the fugly, for the purdy. I just traded off 2 SKSs and 2 Mosins for an SVT, but I would have rather been able to just buy out right. PAX

Nice rifles for sure. From my understanding, the T53 will have a much better trigger pull then say a M44. I know my M44 has by far the worst trigger pull of any rifle I own. I really like the Russian SKS and all the goodies that came with it...

I ALWAYS enjoy Bobby's threads/posts in C&R; he is like the economy-version of Beetle, and it's just as enjoyable to review.
Nice stuff.

These rifles set me back a pretty penny, but it was easy to save for them. Laying off the strip clubs, casinos, and tattoo parlors for a few weeks caused my EBT account to fatten up very quickly.

that is a rare t53 looking so nice. The stock doesn't even look like it has handling marks.
I too have a KBI Russian sks like that one with box. Unfired since factory refurb. I probably wont even end up firing it because i have too many other really good shooting sks. I never thought I woudl have a rifle that I probably wont shoot. Still odd to me. Probably a sickness

I'd like to know as well. I'm slightly reducing my M44 collection and am curious on going rate on some versions. I have a Hungarian M44 no import mark in as nice condition as those unissued Polish ones.
At one time I wanted to collect all the different country M44's but gave up on that. I'd still like a Finn captured one but I don't see that happening. |

I know top dollar on a nice importer is about $300 to $350 in my area. Can not say what premium would be on a non import marked one..... Most Hungarians I have seen were the roughest of the bunch , the one I had was the best shooter despite it's condition. Of course me and you are in different regions and lately getting $200 for an Izzy import marked 44 is hard. Every one has 10 of them already....... But that one you have is a little different , and finding the right buyer is a must for top dollar. Maybe Broker or Gun boards But I'd be interested to see what you could get for that.

It's probably eventually going on Gunbroker for that reason with a fairly high starting bid. I think even rarer would be a Romanian M44 in unissued matching condition. I have a few other non import mark Mosins but none in that nice of shape. One is a M39 I have no idea except as an importer mistake how that got in the USA.
Could have been recaptured by the Soviets and then captured and returned to USA in Korea or Vietnam or something. Sorry for thread hijack. |

I still have a Romanian. Import marked small.....
It has a nice blondish stock ... not as nice as when it was first bought as I've had it 20 years or so and it's a back up/primary hunting rifle at times. it's taken a few whitetail , it wears a pistol scope mounted where the rear sight goes ....... no drill/tap/harm/foul mount by S&K. I tired to sell it a year or so ago as part of the down sizing ...... $300 for the whole rig including the take off parts ..... not a single bite at that price. I do believe it has one mis-numbered part ....... but I'd need to double check to say what it was

Of course.
To make a short story long: Rifle was $275 Seller quoted shipping at $20 After shipping the rifle, the seller emailed me that he grossly underestimated the shipping cost. He showed me the receipt from some sort of "Rip and Ship" place and the total was $55. He asked me to pony up another $35 to square him on shipping. I told him he got fleeced badly and overpaid for what turned out to be a really sucky packing job. I told the seller that I was not responsible for the extra shipping cost, and that he overpaid big time. It could have gone USPS parcel post insured for half that price (Yes, even now in 2017 rates.) Once the seller acknowledged that it was his error and that I was not responsible for the extra $35, I sent him the $35. I just wanted to prove a point. The reason why I caved is because the seller had no idea what he was doing, made the mistakes in error, and most of all because it is a nice collectible rifle. I have seen similar matching T53's go for a lot more, so it was no big deal. So the long answer to your short question: $330 to my door. |

Thanks. I think that's a decent asking cost FWIW
You mentioned the cleaning rod ....... not to be too anal but some people know which cleaning rod is which. I personally am not that guy.....But.. Is that cleaning rod a Chinese one? I know those seem to be even harder to come by than the rifle itself even all matching.
