Thumbs up Who Else Loves the Smell of Hoppe's No. 9?

I just got back from the range and it's time to clean my recent purchase. Popped off a couple hundred rounds with my father. Good times!

Opened up the Hoppe's jar and smelled the lid like it was a cork from a bottle of fine wine.

Waiting for the posts about either "my boy/girl/whatever friend doesn't like the smell" and/or "it's gonna' give me the cancer".

Over it years ago. Also I only use Hoppes now with pristine blued and nickel revolvers and semi autos. Glocks get hosed down with simple green. Much easier. Anything aluminum with Dawn dishwashing liquid regarding AR platforms or similar. Shotguns with Dawn also. Old nagants/surplus that really need the cosmoline stripped off gets the brake cleaner treatment followed by shaving cream and water. Wood gets to sweat in the sun wrapped in newspapers or sit in the truck under the windshield.

they sell Hoppe's N0 9 air fresheners at sporting goods / gun dept / ebay

when the smell wears away just spray some real Hoppes on it to reuse it

The smell of hoppes compliments the smell of a nice scotch or rye whiskey. I know some ppl freak out at the thought but it's always the first pour and never more than one while I'm cleaning. And I go through extra checks and leave any ammo in a different room. There's just something about drinking a good whiskey while scrubbing guns down with some hoppes. Then it's high mileage, full synthetic Mobil one to lube them back up.

Since its a hazardous chemical Hoppes has to provide you a Safety Data Sheet.
Here the formulation:

So its a mixture of vodka, jet fuel, with a hint of banana. The oleic acid reacts with the ammonium hydroxide to create ammonium oleate - a surfactant (detergent).

That's a fairly manly combination of stuff I guess.

No coconut oil like that frog lube junk, thank God.

I know people that their family members or wife will complain about the smell. I don't really find it pleasant or unbearable or understand people that think it is so great. I think the old formulation was known for causing cancer?

I find these threads only slightly less annoying than Froglube ones. Yes I know I can hit the back button!

I remember one guy did not like using Hoppes due to having to be extra careful his cats didn't get in to any of the residue and get poisoned seemed like one did and licked his paws and died.

The new formula is nice, but not as nice as the old stuff. The garage would hold that wonderful aroma for a week!

Smells good but there are so many better products for firearm cleaning now. I still have a bottle of the old original stuff somewhere.

"Better" is in the eye of the user. That's why "what's the best cleaner" threads take on a life of their own.

Like Q-Tips and Kleenex are to cotton swabs and facial tissue, Hoppe's No. 9 is to gun cleaning solutions.

Is there anyone that grew up with guns back in the day that doesn't love the smell of Hoppe's?

I think not.

Don't "love" the smell, but
I do feel happy when I do - reminds me of guns and the sheer fun of owning and shooting them.
Even my wife has fond memories of her dad cleaning his rifles.

my earliest childhood memories are the smell of Hoppes No. 9 while at the local gun shop / gun smith, the shop smelled like Hoppes

my first gun was a hunting shotgun, and thats what I used to clean it, and also 3 in 1 oil.

I used to work at Bass Pro and we had a package of Hoppe's #9 air fresheners they had sent us. Like the old pine tree, but a flat image of a Hoppe's bottle....smelled great.

To me the smell of Hoppes reminds me of Freedom -
You have to be free to own firearms, you have to be free to take them out to the range or field and enjoy them and then you are free to clean them or not at the end of the day. I always clean them as soon as possible. The smell of Hoppes on my hands tell me, I'm now free to have a beer or two.
Always a rewarding smell.

I just went out and found an old bottle of the with-nitro #9. Needed a channel-lock to get the cap off and took a snort...memories came back of me helping my Grandpa clean is Model 1897 and 300 Savage lever gun.

I did note a warning in red on the bottle..."Do not soak nickel plated firearms in No. 9". Not sure about the new stuff, but the old stuff had an ingredient to remove copper. The nickel plating is fine with the old stuff as long as it's intact. But internet lore has it that a break in the nickel will expose the copper flash that's plated before the nickel...No.9 will remove the copper...resulting in exposing bare steel.

Not a chemist, not sure if the same issue exists with non-nitro No. 9.

FWIW

^^^ take two pennies minted after 1982 and put one each in old Hoppes and new Hoppes. Check back in a day or two and see if either one ate copper plating off down to the zinc base.

I read that balistol shouldn't be used with nickel plated firearms for the very same reason. However it was stated using it more as a preservative than a cleaner. The synthetic version of Hoppes isn't known to cause harm.

Here's a good video on cleaning a nickel plated 1911:
