Lightbulb Rules to remember your safety's position.

Remington 870: port=POW!, starboard=SAFE
Benelli Nova: I think the same as Remington 870
Mossberg: tang safety, forward=FIRE!

On trigger-guard safeties:
starboard = right-most postition
port = left-most position

It is very important you develop a simple way of remembering your shotgun's safety switch's positions by touch in case of emergencies especially in the dark. You will not be able to see RED for DEAD in the dark. This is especially true of home defense/tactical shotguns where they could be called to duty in the dark.
It might be prudent to keep a tactical pump gun at home with some shells in the mag tube, the bolt closed on an EMPTY chamber, the gun hanging on the wall by the sling with the muzzle DOWN and the safety already in the FIRE position. One less thing to worry about when in a hurry. Just rack to shoot, period. Just put the gun back on SAFE before handling in a non-tactical situation.

Keeping the muzzle down on the stored gun on guard adds to safety as well as for keeping dust out of the barrel and allows for any excessive oil to seep out the muzzle.

Know your gun's controls by FEEL, not just by sight or sound.

And don't pull the trigger to make sure the gun is unloaded.

Train more
Take more classes

Develop muscle memory

If you have never held your muzzle on a human, applied trigger pressure and the 1911 does not fire....

Well that resets the OODA loop

It’s not how to move the safety - it’s remembering they are there in the first place and having enough training to be able to reflex and clear / solve the issue.

The industry does not publish the real reason why the sig won some contracts...
Too many folks messed up with the 1911 and did not disengage the safety when they needed to shoot
Too many people decocked their beretta and left the decocker down- they draw and can’t fire

The sig has no safety lever and a decocker that resets to a firing position

If you think you need a rhyme to engage/ disengage the safety on your shotgun... i’d Wager you need training and practice

Yes, i have trouble remembering my S&W revolver safety position. Everytime i'm in HD situation i have to ask the intruder to wait a sec. Embarrassing, i'm already a walking joke among local thugs.
Any pointers?

I put an oversized, doom safety button on my 870. Makes for a nice addition and good tactile feel for no look/in the dark operation of the safety.

Depending on the gun, safeties on the trigger guard can be forward OR aft of the trigger.

Vang makes a nice big-button safety...the only one I've found to clear an oem folding stock.

Nice of OP to ignore the minority who shoot left-handed.
