Default mail order black powder

i've looked for a note on this, so sorry if it's old news, but i have seen the regulation about possession of > 1lb of black powder (assume it encompasses black powder substitutes also), but i see no indication of that with online suppliers. seeing that the hazmat surcharge seems to be figured on any amount, is it still possible to, say, buy and have shipped 2 or more 1lb containers of powder as long as that shipment got immediately split up among 2 or more people upon arrival?

am i overthinking this?

of course this is for a California address,
...or perhaps that is typically assumed here?

thanks...gary

would be great if i still flew, but by car, the closest local place i've found means a 3Ĺ-4 hour round trip, not to mention the much greater selection of products available online. i did see a note about CAS meets where vendors might be present, is that a common occurrence? i'm in the San Diego area, by the way, in case someone knows about a place i missed.

thanks...gary

yeah, i've talked with Disc Gun Mart (my go2 store for everything else) and they sound like what they have are pellets, but i will be there this coming week anyway to see. as for most of the rest, i haven't been in touch with them all, but i've discovered that a match for "black powder" in listings or on maps as far as firearm stores... maybe more-so in CA?... does not typically refer to actually carrying powder. besides DGM, i've probably called 8-10 shops in the area with a 0% success rate.

The online retailers don't care how much you order. They will ship it.

What you do with it when you get it is on you.

All online dealers I have ever seen, require a minumum of 5 pounds when ordering. Maybe there is one out there that ships lesser amounts, but I have never seen one personally. Yeah 34 dollars a pound? That is crazy. I get mine locally for around 17 bucks plus tax. Sorry, cannot help on a local source for you, as I no longer live out there.

Good Luck in your search though. Hope you find some soon.

https://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog...ategoryId/3501

Grafs charges a 20 dollar hazmat fee per order. So just buy a bunch and I think you could get it down to like 24 bucks a pound after tax. I buy my powder and primers locally to avoid the hazmat charge.

edit:

Just verfied they have minimum order of 4 lbs, and one 20 dollar hazmat fee also 8 dollar shipping.
Their prices are min 18 dollars a pound.
So add it all up and you can get the powder for around 25 bucks a pound if you buy 100 bucks worth.

Default mail order black powder

Iíve posted this in a couple places, but no one has picked up on it yet. Powder Valley just started selling Goex a couple of weeks ago, first shipment went out 2/12. $16.95 a pound, no minimum order. I used to buy from Powder Inc., but heís far higher now, like nearly $13 a pound more.

6 pounds shipped to my door with hazmat was only $22.50 per pound. Thereís no brick and mortar store Iíve found that can compete with that.

Thatís adding in a $20 hazmat plus shipping.

In carson city nevada you can buy it over the counter for $20-35 depending on what you buy per pound and no hazmat unless it is already added in on the over the counter price. the Sportsman counter guy says not a lot of interest so sales are down. I always thought the hazmat fee was a one time deal when shipping and not by the pound. I know I was told in Nevada if you use real black powder they want a blast safe which does not sound like a bad idea depending on the cost and how much you are going to use. I have two cannons so i will use more than an average shooter if i take the cannons out and have guys teach me about them.
Edit
try muzzleloaders.com and they have it for the prices cited above and a one time hazmat charge from fedex spelled out in yellow whether you order one pound or a hundred pounds. Good luck and something to compare to.

The Turners near me has Pyrodex for $18/lb plus tax and Triple 7 for $28/lb plus tax, which isn’t awful if you’re only wanting to buy small quantities.

finally got a chance to drop by Discount Gun Mart (Morena Blvd store) and looks like i talked to the right guy this time. they have many brands available there, right off i noticed the Pyrodex label, both RS and P. checking a few of the prices, most seemed to be in the $25/lb. range.

cheers...gary

You DO know that "Pyrodex" is not "black powder" don't you.
It's handled differently and different laws, rules, regulations apply.

i doubt if i'd treat any two muzzleloading propellants the same way, though i must admit i am still in the leaning curve regarding the terminology. frankly i'd much rather stick to black powder substitutes, but i did not mean to post any misleading information. i was not aware of the legal differences, but i am certainly aware of the safety issues.

Call around for Alliant Black MZ. It’s my new favorite BP substitute and it’s only $10/lb. Check it out

Well, damn Iím going to have to look into that, thanks. Iíve been happy with Goex and Pyrodex RS and P, but this is a great deal.

Iíll have to find what this SW charges for hazmat. (Looks like a flat $20, which is reasonable.)

Looks like it's appropriate for pistols and long guns.
