I just emailed today and got February 2019. I guess I'll hurry up and wait.

Default Riverside CCW Questions

I used to have a CCW when I lived in Orange County, but had to give it up when I moved to Riverside...now, I'm almost wishing I never left OC....oh well, "If wishes were horses, then...."

Anyway, I'm wondering if I could seek out some advice from our CalGun pros via PM or email....I just have a few questions (like many others) about a "good cause" statement as well as reference letters...
Thanks in advance to anyone who can advise....

Default Concealed Carry Riverside Cty

This thread has seemed to have come to a complete halt! Wonder why?
Anyway, is there any truth to rumor that effective 1/1/2019, All of California will be required to recognize any other state's issued CCW?
Thanks...

From the Riverside Sheriff web page:

Semi-auto single action firearms may be approved depending on proficiency and safe handling of the weapon. Approval will be the sole discretion of the range master and CCW Unit Staff.

Anyone have any trouble getting approval for 1911-type firearms? Sig P238, P938, EMP, etc?

I have a 1911 and aP938 on my permit. No issues and the RSO didn't give me a 2nd look.

Does this mean that those elements need not be present for approval of striker-fired pistols or revolvers?

Want to carry a gun in Riverside County? You have to wait 2 years just to be considered

<snip>

This lengthy wait for a concealed weapon license may sound extreme, but in Riverside County, it is not. Due to years of surging interest in concealed firearms, spurred in part by mass shootings in nearby cities, the average waiting period to be considered for a carry license in Riverside County has climbed from a few months to two years.

<snip>

In an email statement, the department said a “deluge” of applications has “continued non-stop since 2015.” Sniff added that the department has faced a constant workload of 400 to 500 applications since the San Bernardino shooting, which then increased to 500 to 600 requests after an even deadlier mass shooting in Las Vegas in October. As a result of this demand, the total number of active licenses in the county has risen from about 1,700 two years ago to more than 3,000 today.

Applicants can skip to the front of the line if they show an “immediate and substantiated threat to life,” but it doesn’t happen often, according to the sheriff’s department.

<snip>

Eleven other police departments in the county had the authority to process applications, but didn’t, leaving the sheriff’s department to pick up the slack in cities where it does not patrol, like Palm Springs and Indio.

That all changed a few months ago when four mid-county cities – Banning, Beaumont, Hemet and Murrieta – outsourced the application process to a private company, at least in part because of frustration with the existing backlog. The company, MyCCW.us, charges three times as much as the sheriff’s department, but says licenses can be issued in as little as 18 days.

A friend of mine went thru MYCCW because he lives in banning, he thought it was gonna be faster , he paid the money and completed all the requirments, hes been waiting now for almost 4 months . Last he was told is that they are waiting for the Banning Police Lt. to approve but he is backlogged. It may end up being faster than the Sherrif but it aint no 18 days

Default Authorized Firearms for CCW

Two years ago I was granted my CCW. One of the firearms I qualified with was not approved for carry. I was not told why. My guess is that it was a Single Shot Exemption purchase and I never removed that SSE status. I have since re-registered the firearm by manufacture. Can anyone tell me if an H&K VP9 will be approved for carry. Or will it reject again as it is not on the DOJ approved list. I re-qualifying tomorrow and just want to know whether the extra cost will be justified.

2 of my permit guns are off-roster. No issues.

Your issue was probably because it was DROSed as a different caliber than the gun is currently. SSE barrels in 25acp were commonly used to achieve required barrel/overall length, but then your gun is (was) 25acp on paper.

You may already know all this...

How long before the expiration did you contact the RSO for a renewal appointment?

Anyone done their renewal with RCSD recently? How long did it take from appointment date to license in the mail? I know they say to give them 4 months before expiration but does it actually take that long? It's been almost 3 months since my renewal appointment and I'm starting to sweat.

Not in Riverside so just tossing out a guess...SBSD doesn't issue renewal cards till very near the expiration date. Maybe RCSD does the same.

Yes, just renewed in December. I had my interview 3 months out, and my card was mailed out the day the old one expired.

So is it advisable to not date the letters?

IMHO
Dates might be good, but wait until you are near the apt date (6mo or less) to get the letters.
but on the other hand with no date they could just call the person and talk to them to see if they still believe in your good moral character.

I'm a newbie here but live in Palm Springs, Riverside County. Sheriff Sniff is pretty sympathetic on CCW, but I think they are now quoting two years for a permit. I am going to a fundraiser next week for Chad Bianco, a new candidate for sheriff. He seems to also be pro CCW, but claims to be outraged by the two year wait. It is being hosted at the house of a close friend of mine, who says he is sincere. I will post my impressions.

Great forum! I will look forward to participating.

Sheriff Stiff is actually issuing permits, unlike neighboring LA County. The CCW Unit is small and is overwhelmed by the number of applicants. They are doing the best they can. To increase staffing would mean reducing staffing somewhere else, and less deputies on the street is not acceptable.

Bianco is a politician, who will promise anything to get elected.
