Default Lead nose 22LR in my AR safe queen?

Ive been using the hell out of my CMMG 22LR conversion bolt carrier lately. Finally i can enjoy my AR without thinking about dollar signed with each trigger pull.

I had a friend trade me some old bricks of Remington Thunderbolt, which is lead round nose with some sort of coating or lacquer. Im used to shooting copper plated Mini Mags or equivalent.

Is there any issue with shooting bare lead out of a chromed lined AR barrel? Any different cleaning procedure needed?

Zero issues here. Personally I just clean after each range session. Brass brush scrub and patches just like normal. Using the same kit too.

I’ve always had good luck with the Remington Thunderbolts, granted I don’t shoot them out of a AR conversation. But 10/22, Marlin 795, Buckmark, Mark II, SR22, S&W and Ruger wheelguns all shoot and function great with them. Yes they do run a little dirtier then copper plated, but nothing extreme or to worry about. I’ve shot tens of thousands of them over the years.

I would worry about lead fouling up the gas tube. For sure you may want to shoot some 5.56 after each lead 22LR session to blow the junk out of the gas tube. I don't know for sure if lead ammo will cause more fouling in the gas tube over plated ammo, but it might. I try and stick to the plated stuff in my bolt conversion upper, usually Winchester M22.

I shoot any 22lr that will cycle the conversion kit. Plated or sans plating. No noticeable difference to me.

Finish up with a 556 round and then clean it as usual.

Kind of funny, I bought the CMMG 22LR kit so I wouldn't need to drag the 416-22 along with my AR, but the accuracy with the CMMG kit turned out to be pretty crap compared to the 416-22 past 25 yards on my 17" BA Hanson barrel. If not for the convenience factor, I'd sell it and just get a proper upper, but it's going in the closet whenever I have space for the 416.

I have a dedicated 22lr upper, therefore no fouling. Cleaning is easy.
