First up 1944 refurb

Sharp looking rifles, beautiful bores. Did you sand and refinish or did they come to you that way? All of my M44s except for this one are still bathing in cosmoline and look pretty ugly.

This is a Hungarian that I rescued. The metal was as unissued, it looked as if it had never been fired, that's why I bought it. But the wood is a mess, it had been sanded, shellac applied, they painted the sling ferrules black?!?!? and to add humiliation, they drilled in regular sling ferrules on top of the built in dog collar ferrules. I am glad I rescued her, she is a great shooter but I have been looking for a Circle 2 stock for years now, they are rare and hard to find. I may just spring for a Russian stock eventually if I can't find a Hungarian. I kind of like the blonde but Bubba messed it up too much for me. I removed the stupid ferrules he drilled into the stock, filled the holes and stained them to try to match the blonde.















These have not been cleaned up yet but top is a '45 Izhevsk, bottom is a '44 Tula.

The latest batch from aim that was 179 was mix match reviews, some got decent and others all rusted everything. The 1944 was picked up from GB for 225, the shellac on it will last few more years... LOL

So Bobby, what's the story on your blonde M44? Do you know how it came to be blonde? Looks like it was just sanded down and left or does it have a finish? Can't tell from the photo.

Yes - there's not much bluing left on the gun (prob about 5% left) but it has a ton of character!

It was a replacement stock I picked up online. The rifle is actually a T53, The replacement stock was dry and unfinished, so I just put a light coat of shellac on it.

Totally agree with you!
Although mine isn't a wartime production - I would love to know where it's been, it has most certainly been a few places!

Well now that 47 is sold, I really can enjoy playing with the 44 45, I recently inquired. The 1947 M44 was why too nice to shoot, had it since 94 back in old days from Pomona.

Now the 45 can't really tell why polish stock is doing there, or atleast I think is Polish blond.
I will get better pictures, rain permitting in few days.

Your blonde stock doesn't look Polish. The Poles have a unique look and grain. I would guess yours is a light birch Russian stock. Or it could have been stripped of the red shellac and refinished.

The 47 was way too nice, No these are just the why left the refurb/arsenal and pickedup at 94 show.

Yes I was wondering but seems different on the pictures. The bore on this is unbelievable there are some M44 that are amazing bore just can't figure out. luck of the draw-- I don't know. I post the pictures, when sun comes up.

it looks nice with the worn finish! I wonder how the bluing wore off so evenly? almost looks like they scrubbed it with a wire brush to get every area with bluing worn down to bare metal, is it the same under the wood line? or only the exposed areas?

I noticed a lot of military rifles used in Afghanistan have that "worn finish look" with mostly bare metal on all exposed metal surfaces

Here's most of my family (present in spirit are a Polish M44, an M91/59, and a bubbarized 1944 Izhevsk that I just don't want to dig for).



Some Russians (a 1944 Izhevsk, another 1944 Izhevsk that's all original, a 1944 Tula, a 1948 Izhevsk, and a hex receiver 1945 Izhevsk (a non-refurb, too).



Some Chinese T-53s, mostly 1955 from different factories, and one's marked 1953.12. The latter has an Izhevsk bolt (matching to the rifle, of all things).



The hex 1945 Izhevsk, Romanian and Hungarian M44s.



Still looking for a Finn-captured M44 and a few other carbine Mosins.

I have a 44 Izzy which incidentally was a Xmas gift I got from my father many many moons ago.

I'm pretty sure at this point my WASR shoots tighter groups, but I love her none the less.
