Default What do you take to the range?

In the past I've only shot a handgun and .22 rifle mostly at indoor ranges and occasionally outdoors on a friend's property. I just got a mini 14 and plan on spending some time at a local outdoor range. At the indoor ranges I would just show up with my guns, hearing and eye protection and ammo (I had to buy their targets) but I imagine you need to come a bit more prepared at the outdoor ranges. I'm trying to figure out what I would need to bring

So far I've got:
Guns & magazines
Ammo box
eye and ear protection
spotting scope
targets

What else should I bring? Are you generally allowed to have food or beverages at the shooting position?

bring some masking tape to cover previous shots, and wear some good comfy boots or sneakers, walking to the 300yrd target sucks..also some water, and tools if your adjusting scopes or sighting in. Some gun oil and cleaning kit just in case...

double up on ear protection also, foam plugs, and headset. your ears will thank you down the road.

prepare for any weather no to ruin your day.

I always bring my gun cleaning/tool box too. Never know when you might need something in that tool box.

Bring a notebook and pencil too so you can make notes on your zero at different distances and such.

Are you sure one ammo box will be enough?

I would be great if outdoor ranges had the room so I could back my truck up to a stand and park it there. I pretty much bring everything I need and sometimes things I dont need. But at least I have them if and when I need them.

Normal protective gear, sunglasses (if its really sunny),Masking tape, stapler, water, & targets.....

Targets are optional where I go but I prefer not to haggle with the volunteers.

If they list their range rules online...read it, memorize it. You don't particularly want to be the center of attention when you try packing your stuff and moving during a cease fire only to find out its against the rules. Yeah, that RO screaming in your ear is one sight you don't want to be apart of. Don't even get me started on Los Altos' 3 mph rule. LOL

I carry 2 range bags - one with guns-ears-eyes-tools-targets
the other with magazines and ammo.

Its a safety thing - store/lock them in two separate locations when not in use.

Outdoors I would add a hat (suitable bendable brim)
and sunscreen plus what other have suggested.

I take at least 300 Lbs of stuff when I go to an outdoor range. That includes 6 sand bags, 2 lead bags, a horse blanket to put on the bench. Spotting scope, tripod, lead sled, BIG bag "O" tools, Duct tape to hold the blanket to the bench if it blows, steel rifle rest, at least 5 pistols and minimum 5 rifles if I am running light. Maybe a shotgun for sheeits and grins. PLUS all the other stuff the guys above me suggested.

NOTE: I dont haul all of my stuff to the firing line. I keep some of the stuff in the truck.

Everything I own is in either in range bags or hard cases. Each one is clearly marked.

I don't ever have to borrow anything. And I get to loan out stuff to people in need. That makes fast friends. very fun........
Dam near anyone can shoot my guns for free if they act cool. Especially the young ones. Most of em haven't pulled the trigger on a Remy 700 target rifle with a 2 ounce trigger and a huge Nightforce with long sun shade sitting on top.. Or a fiber opticed Glock. Thats the fun of sharing. I love the smiles.

Definitely bring snack food or samiches and water.
I know i will be there at least 5 hours minimum. Probably more like 6 or 7 hours. It is a whole day deal for me. And yes... I am overkill on everything.

Good on the last post: food and water. I'd read through the thread and found food and water only above.

I have a shooting/tackle box I keep cleaning supplies, tools, extra magazines and clips, etc in. Since returning from Iraq and Afghanistan I keep my IFAK (Improved First Aid Kit) which is very specific to trauma caused by gun shots in there too. There is no room in it any more for guns or ammo. Which I carry in a reusable Wal-Mart shopping bag now.

I've learned after getting to the range only to go damn I forgot the . . .

Range Bag:
Extra empty magazines
Speed loader
Ear and Eye Protection
Batteries for ear protection
Gun Oil
Bolt Grease
Bore Snake
Clean rag for the above
Small slotted screw driver
Hex wrenches for scopes and red dots
Small bottle of glass cleaner for the above
Padded bath mat to rest gun on (learned this from a guy at the range) They are usually the perfect size 18" by 24" or so.

Extras:
Water / Soda
Energy bars
Hat
Sunscreen
Spare Change for vending machines
Cash for targets and the like (they hate it when you use your credit card for $2.50)

I bring pretty much all of the above.. I'd only add a multi-tool, cleaning kit, and extra batteries for my EO-Tech's and other optics. The first aid kit has helped as well for minor cuts and scrapes. I do have Quick Clot as well just in case, but hope I'll never have to use it.

I've been trying to slim down my range load, but sometimes its difficult. I use two range bags, one oriented towards pistols and one towards rifles. The rifle loadout is carried in a backpack while the pistol loadout is carried in a iShot range bag. Typical loadout for the day is:

rifles
pistols
spotting Scope
compact manfrotto tripod
fullsize manfrotto 055proxb w/ 327rc2
hogsaddle
sling
rear bag
bipod
eyes
ears
ammo
front rest
data book
Kestrel
pen
weigand extractor tuner
socket wrench
allen wrench
target stickers
shooting mat
speedloader
magazines
brass pouch

Yup. That's me. Just yesterday I went to try and re-zero my optic and of course I forgot the allen key to reset the windage and elevation knobs to 0

If you go to a range that you can't back your truck up to the firing line you might try a range cart. They are big with the CMP match crowd. Some will hold up to 6 guns and your range supplies. Some convert into chairs.

I often forget food and water.

But I have been known to show up with a camp stove and a percolator.

A basic first aid kit isn't a bad idea, either.

Plain tan masking tape to cover holes and re-use tan paper range targets. And pencils for circling groups and taking notes etc.

And what everyone else said.

When I go to Lytle Creek I bring my guns, range bags with hearing and eye protection, plenty of ammo and all my magazines, my cleaning kits including rags, my targets and my pvc pipes to put my target stands together. I bring a rubber mallet, duct tape, paracord, clamps, and anything else I use to put my targets together.

I also bring a trauma kit and I stop at the gas station before I get there to buy some light snacks and cold drinks. I don't stay long enough to eat lunch there and I'm usually done around noon so I just drive down to get some good food with my friends.

Always remember to bring cash because some ranges don't take anything else except cash.

Really no different. My indoor range let's you shoot about anything you can carry in. Only time I bring extra stuff is if I'm planning more than half a day, then I might bring cleaning gear.

My outdoor range has carts you can take to your truck and load all 1000 pounds you want to bring in.

I always have one of my solid .22 cal Dewey cleaning rods to clear stuck cases should that be an issue in my rifle.

I also carry a small hammer and a 10" 1/4" steel rod for smacking squibs out of a barrel on handguns. Both of the above have been very helpful for fellow shooters on the range other than just myself.
