Was issued a 2.5" S&W model 10 in 1980.

Eventually purchased a 3" model 66.

Carried a personally owned 2" model 49 back up/off duty

@Mustang....WOW super cool! I've never seen a 2.5" model 10 before, or knew that PD's issued them. Sweet model 66 3" too!

Yeah, S&W made all kinds of barrel lengths for the model 10...2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5...

My personal fave for a revolver barrel length is a 3"...has the lull length ejector rod, but is still easily carryable.

Although long retired, I still enjoy shooting my model 66.

Kept this from when I bought it.

@Mustang...Awesome! Can't believe how cheap they were back then!

I have a 10-5 2", 10-5 3", and a 10-10 4" and love them all! I also have a 66-4 2.5" and a 65-5 3", amazing guns too!

Just went to my Lieutenant's retirement party from LASD today, so cool seeing how different law enforcement was back then in the 70's and 80's, especially the equipment/weapons. I'm a younger guy (early 30's), and most guys my age seldom appreciate the old school revolvers, it's all about "Tacti-Cool" weapons to them. I say it's all about the wood and steel! The saying really is true, they just don't make them like they used to!

Started out in 1980 with the Ventura County Sheriff's Department and was issued a S&W Model 66 4". Quickly transitioned to a Colt 1911. Lateraled to Beverly Hills and was issued a S&W model 66 again in 4" Transitioned again to the 1911. Would love to find another stainless model 66 in $' though. Old times sake.

Why did you go from a 25-2 to a 25-5? What advantage did you feel 45 LC have you over 45 ACP?

LEO S&W revolvers is all I care about lately, would like to pick up a model 19 and 27.

My 1965 model 10-5 shoots like a friggin laser beam.

would love to see a pic of your 3" model 10

You think that was cheap....my model 49 was $150.

Things have changed a lot since I first started. We did not have any ballistic protection, for instance. No pepper spray. (we did have CN "mace" but it took about 15 or 20 seconds to have any effect, and the effect wasn't much). ASP batons had not yet been invented, so we used a "sap" or "slapper". Check your uniform pants...bet it has a small pocket on the leg, about thigh high on the side seam...for a sap.

Nice M&P, 'cav

I would love to have a 3.5" model 27, but those things are so dad gummed expensive, I settled for a 4" model 28, for about 1/3 the cost.

Nice! I'd snatch up a 28 in a second.

Or a model 10 snub. Dont go on gunbroker, it will make you cry, all the nice revolvers at dirt cheap prices on there.

Fed Agency mid 80's. Issued SW 66 2.5 with the Fed .38 110gr +P+. Idea was near .357 mag performance with better extraction/ejection with the short rod and the .38 length case. Later on bought a 3" M65 and carried it with full house .357. Still have that gun today and use it for backpacking, fishing, camping. Retired 2007.

@Mustang...cool information!

Here's a few pictures of my 3" barrel Model 10-5, it was manufactured in 1974. I absolutely love it, such a perfect balance to it. It comes with me to the range almost every time, shoots like a dream too!

Love those 3 inchers! That is a nice one.

Interesting that it has the square butt.

Thanks! Yeah you don't see them in a square butt that often, or a 3" model 10 at all. I can see why there is such a cult following of the 3" barrels, perfect balance, great shooters, great looks, good for concealability or as a carry piece, and positive extraction of casings.

All you guys who were issued revolvers, did you ride a horse, too? My agency just had patrol cars.

Seriously, now that I retired, I look at my Smith & Wesson model 67 and it brings back a lot of memories.

Wow what an incredible deal on your S&W model 64!!! Great history on it too from the CDC, they were one of the last agencies in the United States who were still issuing revolvers fairly recently.

I just purchased this revolver on an auction site. It is not yet in hand but on the way. It is a Model 67. It is stamped on the frame L.A.S.D. I am not sure what that stands for but it looks cool.

Great find! L.A.S.D. stands for Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. L.A.S.D. issued S&W model 15's and 67's in the 70's and 80's. I know several L.A.S.D. deputies current and retired who wish they would have bought theirs back.

I tried out a couple of different duty BUGs. I used an M&P 9mm compact for a while but it was way too big and bulky. Even with minimum lubrication it still collected tons of lint, not to mention oil that stained my A's.

I also tried a S&W 642. Obviously lighter and smaller, but it had a wretched DA pull and the factory boot grips were totally inadequate for comfort and managing recoil. Oh, and it had no real sights, just a notch to the rear and a fixed low profile blade in the front. Impossible to pick up a sight picture in anything other than bright daylight. I understand the rationale for low / no sight picture to avoid hanging up on the holster and the assumption that it will likely be used in a close range point and shoot engagement if ever needed. However, I still needed to meet Department qualifications and accuracy standards with it in order to carry it.

The last one was a Ruger LCR in .38 Spl, a drastic improvement over the 642 in every way. Ridiculously light, yet very easy to stage the smooth trigger for accurate shooting. The factory Big Dot front sight drastically improves the overall sight picture and I've never had any issues with it hanging up while drawing from a pocket holster. The well designed factory grips mitigate much of the recoil and make it almost pleasant to shoot. Almost.

San Bernardino S.D. 1977-1997 Reserve. Started with a S&W 6" Mod 28.
When the 586 came out I bought one in 6" and carried it in a Hoyt front break.
Shot the 586 in a Palm Srings Police Match in 86. Placed at 15 out of 150. Very humbling experience.
As I recall LAPD kicked *** at that match. Not many autos competed back then.

Very cool and nice 15 out of 150! that's really good! Wow the 586 in a 6", beast of a gun. Wouldn't wanna be on the receiving end of that one at gun point haha.

At the time it was between a Colt Python or the 586. There was a gun shop that was owned by the campaign manager of the new Sheriff to be. He had the first 6" 586 in the county,so he said. Well that just made my mind up between the Colt and the Smith. Boy was that Smith a shooter. The new Sheriff issued, when you qualified new Silver Tip .375 ammo. Said he wanted his people to have the best ammo at the time. This was against the advice of the Coroner. Coroner's office didn't like Silver Tip because there was little left of the bullet to do accurate ballistics in officer involved shootings. So the story goes.

Very cool information, yeah as beautiful as the Colt Python is the old 586's are just tanks of a gun and yes great and very accurate shooters. You made a great choice! I have the 586's stainless brother, a 686 no dash 6" barrel from 1985, and wow what an accurate handcannon! They really just don't make them like they use to!

The S&W 438 needed a dab of paint to pick up the front sight and a deburr job from a S&W armorer and it ran pretty well. I ended up switching to a Ruger LC9S in a support side pocket which has worked well, but I will pick up a G43 this summer. Ruger LCR has some nice upgrades to the Smith, but didn't point well for me.

When I signed on as a Reserve for my first LEA in late 1974, I had just purchased a S&W 6" 27, Highway Patrolman a year earlier. I must have sold that gun as I have no idea where it went. I carried it for about a year.

When I graduated from the (full time) academy, my parents bought me a 4" Colt Python, which I still have. I carried that for the next 4 years or so.

When I went to my second agency, I carried the Python for about a year longer while my Colt Combat Commander was being built by a custom smith. I carried that for the rest of my career and the Python went into the safe.

Contra Costa SO issued Mod. 10 Bull Bbl 4" in 1968. I had already purchased a Mod. 19 with a 6" Bbl. but changed it over to a 4" some years later. SO transitioned to S&W 5906 in about 80.

Very nice, but did you mean your SO transitioned to the 5906 in 1990? The third generation model 5906 didn't come out until 1988. It may have been the second generation all steel model 659 your thinking of, which was produced during the late 1970's and early/mid 1980's.

These were issued by LASD in the 60s. I bought them from a retiree in the 80s for $50 each. Also bought a Model 60 for same price but sold it years ago.

Worked Waukegan PD in Illinois 1966-1970 until most of us were fired in the Waukegan Police Strike of 1970..Ended up spending 22 years with Lincolshire PD in Illinois. Was issued a Smith & Wesson M & P with bull barrel until I saved enough for my Smith & Wesson Model 19 4" Had the sweetest trigger by a great gunsmith http://www.imfdb.org/images/thumb/d/...n-Model-19.jpg
