Default Beretta 92fs Vertec conversion

Some time ago I started to work on my Beretta 92fs. Recently I became interested in the Vertec Profile and asked around to see if I can meet up with a forum member that has one, just to check it out.

Well, Piedrarc came through and let me shoot his Beretta Vertec. I was sold...

So...

This was pretty simple actually.

I am a little worried about trying on the M9A3 grip to check how the radius works out (I decided to get one of those to serve as a radius checker)

Haven't sanded it yet either. This is just file work.

Just tried on the M9A3 grip to check the radius. Grip went on a little tight... but I haven't sanded the rear of the frame yet so I assume it will be a little more spot on.

You can certainly do a lot with that rear of the frame. I am sure there is enough meat there to simulate a higher palm swell as well by reducing the bottom of the bump. Bottom line is its doable with a file.

The entire time I was looking at it while sanding (a whole 5 min) I couldn't help but think that they (Beretta) could have machined a couple of rails on the sides of the rear strap to allow for changeable rear straps where the palm swell could be placed high, mid or low.

I just sanded it down... and copying the video files... will edit together and post tonight... also will take the bottom "droop" of the beavertail off.

You can see the "droop", right?

Very well done! Are you planning to do any work to the front strap? I badly want a Vertec and I don't think I have the stones to do this myself. Want to do more?

I checkered the front strap on this one before. Will checker the rear strap as well. Still need to decide if I want to modify the WC grips to Vertec Profile or just order Vertec grips.

If you wanted me to change something on your frame I would have to PPT the gun from you. I don't have an 01ffl.

Checkering is no problem. I will do that next. Probably tomorrow. Can't bring the curvature of the beavertail undercut any higher - the frame is relieved inside for the strut.

All it took is time actually. I was surprised by how difficult I thought it was going to be and how easy it actually was.

Thank you, I am unfortunately not in a county that will allow me to get an 01 without a physical dedicated business location, so I will have to wait until I move out of this county.

I caught the video in my you tube feed when I woke up this morning. Nice work!
I especially liked your narration over the sped up parts. It's a great addition over the long periods of quiet filing.

Thank you. Glad you liked it. I didn't know what to say so had to come up with something on the spot when editing the video. That is why there are so many pauses in my voice-over.

I think you are true craftsman. I would never even think about doing that by hand.
I have a set of factory vertec grips I will send you if you want them. Just P.M. me.
Also a flush fit laniard loop...Vertec No Loop if you want.

Note: The factory grips are about 0.060 longer than standard 92fs, fit bottom flush.

Note: Wilson Combat are 0.070 wider in center than factory. About 0.035 each grip. Change the feel which I am sure you will notice. Flat vs curved

Wish I had half your talent. Thanks for sharing a unique build.

Thank you for the kind words and the offer. I already ordered Vertec grips from Beretta, have the Vertec slide and the flat bottom mainspring cap. The Vertec i shot had Beretta grips on it and they were thinner than WC, especially noticeable at the screws where the WC grips bubble out.

My thoughts on the Wilson Combat grips.
Due to the "layers" of material colors it gives a very custom look.
Only by curving and cutting through the layers can you achieve this.
If they were flat than only a single color would dominate the grip.
Would be nice if they offered factory copy or custom.

I hope all CalGunners can truly appreciate what you are doing. Most of us have to make a custom firearm with off the shelf parts.
When I read "just buy one it is easier than making one" That person does not understand the pride and joy of creating something. Just like the old days of travel pulling off the road to see what beauty the country offers between point A and B. It is not the destination but what we learned along the way.

Bless your talent and let us enjoy the journey

Per recommendation on Beretta Forum, 25LPI was selected for checkering. This is to ensure I don't cut through into the mainspring hole.

And the result.

Awesome work. I may have missed it in the video, but are you planning on re-anodizing the frame, or perhaps using a spray-on coating like Cerakote?

The grip screw bushings are staked in and I am worried about messing up the frame removing them. No steel can go into the anodizing bath, so I can't anodize.

Will have to cerakote or similar.

I'm amazed that you did that with a file... I looked at the pics and was assuming you used a mill

I think it may have been more difficult with a mill, especially a mill that I have.
Plus I enjoy working with files.

I meant the planar cuts - I looked at the pics (not noticing the vise) and figured you rounded it manually but did everything before that with a mill.

Well, this is interesting.

Got some Beretta Vertec grips, and... notice the grip screw hole offset.

Looking online I see pics of people putting these onto their FS frames without issues, and the M9A3 wrap around grip fit perfectly so I assume these are out of spec

Called Beretta and they confirmed that the Vertec grips will not fit 92FS. so this means M9A3 frame is more similar to 92FS than Vertec?

Anyway, modified the screw holes and cointersink recesses a bit making sure the grips didn't protrude past the shoulder of the frame on top. Modified all 4 holes so there wasn't a large gap at just two screw heads.

Done.

As you can see I modified all 4 holes and countersink recesses but made sure the grips still sit flush on top and bottom.

So all is good.
