Yeah but i bet most of those calibers are very rare and not popular enough for mass production. some are great for mass production

So far I have AR's in 5.56/.223 and 7.62x39. Trying to figure out what will be next. The 243 wssm might be fun, the 55gr rounds in that caliber have a crazy flat trajectory. But then a nice house clearing round like the .458 socom sounds fun too. So many options.

Yeah, there are still many many people who think .223 and 5.56 are the same.

I'd add 5.56 on its own.

Great list none the less. I am impressed

The cartridge case dimensions are the same, therefore the chambers of either one will fit the other ammo.

If you want to get so picky as to differenciate between 223 and 5.56, you should really keep track of the 10+ variations of 223/5.56 chambers...

Question .300 calibers, Confusing

You mentioned a 300 Wisper which I never heard about. But I know of a 300 AAC and a 300 Blackout. Are they all one in the same or different? I've seen 300 AAC complete uppers for sale as well as ammo, but neither of the other two in either form. What's up doc?

This list is doesn't include many cartridges that have been used on AR15s. I can think of a long list of bolt action uppers chambered in everything from .308 win, 30-06, etc. up to and including 50BMG.

You just bumped a thread from 2010. 300 AAC BLACKOUT was approved by SAAMI on January 17, 2011. BTW, welcome to the forum.

300 blackout/aac is the commercialized version of 300 whisper.
Both of those use a 1.350" trim length.
There are also variations of 300x221 that use a 1.400" trim length.
The short trim length ammo can be used in any chamber.
The longer trim length ammo can only be used in the longer chambers.

I don't believe 7.62x25 uses a gas system, I'd expect it to be blowback.

You want a ton more calibers go check sskindustries.com that's where J.D. Jones does his JDJ cartridge thing and he's the father of the Whisper rounds (300 Whisper, 338 Whisper and so on).
He's also the guy that made the .950 JDJ out of a shortened 20mm antiaircraft round.

They are off-the-shelf bolts and mags.
The barrel is the harder part to get.

There are factory bolts for 6.8spc (0.420"), 7.62x39 (0.440") and 458 socom (0.473") that are used for any of the cartridges larger than a 223/5.56 (0.380").

All it should take is a barrel, a smaller bolt and some magazine work and one of these could be turned into a 30-06:

I don't agree with the separation of calibers by bolt modification. What ever that means. The AR-15 is a caliber neutral platform. It does not imply caliber. Barrels and bolts and mags change with calibers its part of the AR-15. A 6.8SPC and a 6.5 Grendel is just as much an AR-15 as a 5.56 even though they don't use a 5.56 bolt they use a caliber specific bolt same as the 5.56 uses a caliber specific bolt. You also missed lots of calibers. 450 bushmaster, 270AR, 375 Reaper, 6mm ARP, 277 wolverine just to name a few.

Remington chambers the R-25 in 7mm08 and 243. That makes them pretty common.

It would help if you named the calibers you think are "obscure". Usually bolts come with the barrels. I get extra Grendel bolts from Maxim Firearms but they also carry 6.8SPC and 7.62X39. http://www.maximfirearms.com/online-...olts-carriers/

Then there Texas Undergound Tactical
http://www.undergroundtactical.com/c...rts/upper.html

I got my 270AR bolt with the barrel from AR Performance.

I think I heard there is a 12 gauge upper in the works somewhere. I know 12ga will fit through a magwell with room to spare

357 Sig...simple blowback for this needs 30 ounces of bolt+buffer
400 Cor-Bon........will be worse than 357 sig.
41 Action Express..... and even worse.
10mm Auto ......still no.
45 Super .......nope
45 Win Mag.......nay coz.

(credit to melensdad from oa2.org for the list)
Those could be made to work... Ive done .357 sig builds for customers, but to keep it safe you really need more than 30 ounces of mass to delay the blowback. I don't even want to do the math for the 400 corbon or 41 AE.

Years back HK determined that a .308 could run in simple blowback also... with a 26 pound bolt. I'm guessing the 45 winmag would require around 4-5 pounds of bolt. The 400 corbon should be even more.

Bottleneck cases can be operated with gas... .30 carb uppers that use DI are out there. Same for 7.62x25 Tok. Even a 9mm can run on a locked breach gas op gun.

and cannot forget Franklin Armory's .17 rimfire that uses an Osprey Piston and a locked breech.

7.62 tok SMGs like PPSH41 have a very heavy bolt... there's just not room in the AR receiver and buffer tube for that kind of weight

In Blowback, the bolt and bullet part ways at velocities according to the proportion of energy created by the cartridge and the mass of the bolt; (light bullet, high speed vs heavy bolt, low speed....The proportionate velocity is inverse to the proportionate mass of each.). One COULD make a BB AR in 762 tok...you'd need lots of weight or a great buffing system... or you'd just break something eventually.

There was a guy making AK blowback kits for 7.62x25... the bolt carrier and bolt were solid, and he kept a structure like the piston, only it was just a big weight.

More time is required to overcome the inertia of a greater mass... so chamber pressure can drop to a safe level before the breech uncorks.

Contrary to what some believe; a recoil spring cannot be used to retard blowback... the spring's force at the initial load is at its lowest. A spring can slow and return a moving bolt... not delay the bolt's initial acceleration. If your spring were sufficient to delay blowback, as it compresses, its force increases, while the energy acting on the bolt decays. Doesn't work.
