Why build your own?

I'm doing it to gain knowledge. I have an AMD 65 kit and if I do a screw build I can change it around and experiment.

P.S. I have a bench grinder I can bring if it's needed.

Does that need SBR paperwork? Or can you build your own without the paperwork? The barrel on the AMD 65 is shorter than 16 inches correct?

I'll have to measure to see. It's got a huge muzzle brake on it. If it is too short I'll add a fake can.

As with anything firearms or power tool related, any drinking is done afterwards!

Anybody else on gunbroker.com bidding? We should not bid against each other...we have a little time to get the parts kit. I think we should list an item we are bidding on to save us money?

I have my eye on a Polish underfolder kit in 7.62x39. If I purchase the kit and this flat from AK-Builder.com:

http://www.ak-builder.com/modules.ph...howpage&pid=64

Will I have everything I need to complete the build? I know I'll need a longer muzzle brake to meet OAL compliance with the folder. What U.S. made parts do I need to meet 922(r)?

I have no experience with this so go easy on me. Thanks.

I am new too...but you might want to get extra rivets, just in case? Curtis knows about our build in Ca and that most of us are going to be newbies. Juat call him after you get your parts kit and he will take care of us. Make sure you buy a parts kits with a STAMPED receiver NOT MILLED I almost made this mistake. As far as 922 compliant get a US trigger set and stock? All trigger parts, your hand made receiver, and stock(both fore and butt) should be ok?

I have some extra rivet sets & cross members, and maybe one spare flat for the Romy from AK builders, just in case someone is short.
I can take some cordless power tools(drills, grinders, saws),dremel, punches, hand tools, MAPP torch to heat treat the flats, calipers, micrometers, etc.
We still need a bending jig and maybe more rivet tools, GO and NO-GO gauges.

the long ones?

start drilling them out with a small bit, then work your way up to bigger bits, 2-3 should work, then just tap it out afterwards

i've had my parts kits, US compliance parts, receivers and rivets for months! i just havent had the tools, the money to buy the tools, or the time to do this! i'm so excited

like i said before, i should be able to get burgers. my fraternity has a membership to a restaurant supply place, so the deals there usually put costco to shame. as long as we keep it as the weekend of the 25th though!

the only thing not to look forward to that weekend is having to drive all the way back to san diego to leave the built ak(s) at my permanent residence and then back to UCLA, since having guns in my trunk across the street from campus is just screaming trouble (even though there would be no ammo or even magazines present). my friend made headlines a couple years ago for walking his unloaded crossbow from his car to his apt; police confiscated it and last i heard he still hasn't gotten it back!

If everyone who has told me that they can bring tools, brings them, we should have everything we need and then some! We are still going to be in need of tables, chairs, paper plates, platic cups, etc. Anyone who is planning to spend the night will need to bring whatever they want to sleep in/on (tent?, cot, sleeping bag, etc.). Also, I don't drink coffee so, unless my wife leaves some, there won't be any in the house or, a coffee maker!

I met Wyseguy on friday when I bought a rifle from him and he is willing to bring all the tools to make a screw build. So, with the rivet tools others are bringing, we should be good for tools.

Impactco and all,
I am no expert. In fact I'm still an AK build virgin. But, I believe that you will need a parts kit, a flat with rails(maybe an extra just in case), a rivet set (or two), and then whatever US made parts you decide to use so that you have 10 or less foriegn parts in your build. For the polish underfolder (I'll assume that you're going fixed mag and keeping the imported stock), I think you'll want to use: US made magazine, trigger, piston, reciever, muzzle device and pistol grip. I think I just over did it but, these are the easiest US made parts for you to find.

Yeah they can be a PITA. Don't use a hand drill, use a drill press. It's really hard to get it straight.(I know from experience) Go half from one side and half from the other. Cinch it up in a vise, perpendicular to the vice jaws(yes I'm dumb and tried it the other way the first time)get your punch/BFH and give it hell.

Also....I just read another post and remembered I have a 7.62x39 NOGO gauge. Don't have a GO gauge, but if it chambers a round it passes the go. I'll make up some dummy rounds to use instead.

I would like to join in if still possible. I have a brand new drill press, just waiting to be used. Plus I have a grinder and other small tools to throw in. I have one 3x6 table and two small 3x3 tables I could bring also along with two extention cords. let me know if I can still get in on this. I have two kits that need to be built up. is anyone going to bring a barrel puller? thanks CSA for putting this together.

I am going to try from a flat...I am going to order 2 flats and either 2 rivet or screw sets.
Is it me or our we going to have a blast? I think we should offer our host something for his hospitality? Maybe a little cash to cover his higher than normal power bill?
If we all bring our tools we said...bring food and snacks and sodas...this will be looking good.
Somebody bring a camera to capture our mistakes, triumphs, and good times?

I would be more than willing to come if there's enough space. At this point I don't think I'd be trying a build myself, but I'd love to come hang out, learn, and help however possible. I have a friend who'd also love to come.

Do we have a bending jig lined up yet? I scanned the thread again and didn't see anyone saying they had one.

Gotta know if I need to order a flat or not.

I will be attending the build party to help out the newbies. If anyone plans to buy beer, please buy bud light. It has drinkablilty and will stimulate the economy since its made here.
