Default New Rifle Please chime in

So I just picked up a gently used Remington 5R Milspec in .308 from River City Gun Exchange. I emailed Remington and they confirmed the specs, born in 2002.

She's a beute and has a VX-3 4.5-14x50mm mounted on top.

Anyway, I am excited to get back in to shooting from a brief hiatus. So please chime in with your .02˘. I need suggestions for a nice case, detachable magazine modification and a good place to start shooting and meeting like minded folks who can show me a few things.

For the place to shoot, Sac Valley
http://www.sacvalley.org

I bought this Boyt case for $99 a few months ago when it was on sale. Real happy with it.

Good luck!

STAY AWAY FROM RCGE!! They will act all nice, but they are evil, I tell ya, EVIL!

Just kidding. I was just there today. I love those guys!

I second Sac Valley. By far the best range I’ve ever been to.

Thanks for the responses.
I've bought several guns from RCGE. I like the guys there.
Regarding Sac Valley, is it pretty busy out there on the weekends? Should I get out there early?
The last time I went to a range was Cordova and some of the people out there were down right scary! LOL. Since I have been shooting on private property.
I would like to stretch the legs on this new rifle so Sac Valley should be perfect for that.

RCGE is ok but historically their prices have been on the steep side. I’ve bought like 10-12 firearms from them. Their prices make me stay away unless they have something I can’t find elsewhere cheaper.

Yeah, same here. I also don't buy ammo from them very often, since they are in the city, I don't like being fingerprinted for an ammo purchase. But they are close to home and have some good used guns so I stop in from time to time.

Sac Valley tends to get busy around 11:00. That’s when it gets scary. The 300 yard range gets full sooner.

Lots of fun matches there.

Weekday early mornings are the time to go. Be advised that the 300-yard range is self-policed, meaning you are all responsible for safety of yourself as well as those around you; you all are the RSO's.

You'll also need to qualify at the 100-yard range prior to being allowed at the 300-yard. Just shoot your target and bring it in for the staff to see. They'll give you a card and wristband.

Also, bring chamber flags.

Instead of paying a smith to inlet your current stock for a magazine, just buy a new stock. The bottom metal will run you $100 and the smith likely $100 as well. Your still stuck with the basic stock that has no adjustment. For $350 you can pick up a Bravo Chassis that magazine ready, has an adjustable cheek riser, and LOP. Your action will drop right in and some $30 Magpul AICS patterned magazines will have you up and running.

I love Sac Valley and have never thought it was scary because they have the best RSO's and system set up to watch everyone. They also dont get the 909er type demographic you get at other ranges closer to civilization. Sac Valley is the best range in the area. Its pretty big and I've been there when it was "crowded" which isnt bad at all. Still plenty of room to find a spot you just might have to go a little bit further down the line. They are real pros running that range.

You are right, it is definitely the best public range I’ve ever been to. Best RSOs. I guess I was thinking back to when I used to shoot on ranges 6 and 12. I miss shooting there.

This is the best choice. You can sell that original stock on eBay for at least $150.
The Bravo stock is more comfortable.

Yeah I do like that stock idea. I think I need to get out and shoot it as is to see how much I can do for accuracy before I modify it.
I have been reading about ammo and bullet weights lately as well.
I hope to get to shoot it this weekend.

1st and foremost nice rifle. Check bells & Carlson for stock I'm using on mine the a2. Please check badger ordnance incase you wanted to use a detachable mag that holds 10rnds. I know there are more places for this. And yes as others said sac valley is the place.
