Thumbs up PSL Pistol Build Thread!!(TEST FIRE VIDEO UP!!!!!!!!!ON POST 7)

I decided I would make a build thread for my PSL pistol build now that I am somewhat close to finishing it. The receiver is just about completed, the barrel has been cut and re-profiled, the gas piston has been cut to size and piston head drilled out and will be welded on Thursday along with the newly sized gas tube by a friend who is a much more skilled welder than I am. Pictures are below of some of the steps (some things I forgot to photograph).

Cold Steel solutions 80% blank
I am about 85% done with the receiver portion; it took a lot of grinding and a lot of elbow grease with a file to get everything to fit in place. I still need to heat treat the axis pin holes (I just remembered ) and a few other little things and ill be ready to start riveting.

Safety selector hole took a lot of filing but came out very nice

Cutting, Filing and grinding out the magazine area (makes me wish I had a mill, it would have been so much easier and faster lol).

Gas piston work
After measuring and marking the piston where I needed to cut it I threw it on the lathe. Once cut I took the piece with the piston head attached and removed it the same way and then cleaned the face of the cut up. After that was done I put the piston head in the lathe and began to drill it out so it could be reattached to the shortened piston rod.

Barrel chopping and profiling
The barrel is now 12 inch’s, I took a hack saw to it and threw it on my little 9X20 lathe to clean up the cut and begin re-profiling it. It took me quite some time to do, I took my time this was my first time using a lathe really and I didn’t want to screw up the barrel or the lathe I just bought. The finished product came out great and I am very happy with it.

Gas Tube

I don’t have any pictures right now. I will get some during the welding and update the thread.

Default UPDATE(98% Done!!)

Zero round sled installed permanently, complete riveting, head spaced and pinned, furniture cut and partially shaped, railed forearm ground and modified to fit larger barrel(2 hours or grinding and filing). internals installed and functioning.

98% compleated, all thats left is to finish shaping the wooden furnature, pin the populated barrel, and covert from a single shot pistol to a semi-auto and it will be ready for the test fire, wood refinishing and other cosmetic details will come after..

What do you guys think for a finish, Park it? or Chrome it? hmmmmmmm help me out.

I appreciate people posting build pics, but please, just be sure that you don't get cheap imported 7.62R ammo banned for the rest of us because you posted pics of your pistol on the internet.
General rule: If you build a 5.45 or 7.62R pistol, do not post pics of it on the internet.

I've read about that whole "armor piercing ammunition" fiasco before on AKforum. While I understand doing everything possible to avoid a repeat history, I think it was just a confluence of unfortunate circumstances - with most of the blame falling on the rogue ATF agent who, without legal authority, made the pronouncement. It took some time and threats of legal action, but it was ultimately reversed. Thinking back to 1993/1994, there was a flurry of anti-firearms activity in the executive branch and the legislative branch, and this was just another in a long series of bad laws/enforcement actions.

Practically speaking, I don't see how one person's home build will upset the status quo when it comes to the classification of x54R and 5.45x39 ammunition as "armor piercing" and banned from importation. With some effort, a handgun can be made to fire any ammunition, so the ATF's interpretation and definition is unworkable. I'm not sure that the ATF will want to revisit this issue again when they've already implicitly acknowledged that the earlier interpretation was wrong.

Also, the 1994 ATF pronouncement specifically mentioned production and introducing into the marketplace as being the reason for the re-classification. The rogue agent attempted to clarify this by arguing that the it was because the AK pistol was "offered for sale" (rather than sold in the marketplace), but even under this interpretation, I don't think a home build would constitute that, by any stretch of the imagination.

In any case - this pistol PSL is pretty cool! I've always wanted to build an Obrez, but this may be more of a possibility - I don't know the first thing about welding, much less re-welding a Mosin receiver.

It is not my intent to be the forum A-hole or er.
Like I said, I appreciate people posting build pics. The galil re-weld thread was awesome.
Enough other people who are more knowledgeable on the subject than me (or you) think it is an issue best not brought up, and enough so that it is a taboo subject on other boards.
I spoke in person with the K-var guy, forget his name, at the SAR show a few years ago about it when they were selling krink kits, and he certainly seemed very, very concerned about it.

Yes, because he is a business selling them, not an individual constructing them in his house. If someone were to begin selling them for profit, we would most likely have a similar problem. These are built for personal use (as a homebuild can't be built with the intent to sell).

Man, remember when in my thread I said to hack off those tall rail sections!!

Coulda saved yourself a lot of work!

I have a mill but the reason why I didnt get it to the correct size was because it doesnt say anything about it binding with the mag in the instructions

I hate to say it man but you may be in for the same pita issues I was having with the mag fit once you get it all riveted together.

So you suggest we run and hide with our hobbies under a rock and hope we dont get spotted? I think the problem is people need balls and stare the problem face to face, go to court, get votes, and be more direct and proactive.

WTF U SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME!!!!!!
hahaha jk.
i agree though, nowhere did it say that the magazine would bind with the rails, thats the way they were shown to be cut by a few different places so thats the way i did it. and i did experience the problems it took quite some time with a dremel to get the mag to fit right. it may get worse again once riveted but it wont take long to fix it again since i removed allot of material the first time.

i agree though, nowhere did it say that the magazine would bind with the rails, thats the way they were shown to be cut by a few different places so thats the way i did it. and i did experience the problems it took quite some time with a dremel to get the mag to fit right. it may get worse again once riveted but it wont take long to fix it again since i removed allot of material the first time.
Im going to send the list of fixes needed to their instructions. My 2nd PSL blank came last week, been taking lots of measurements of the fire control group and other areas.

I hope you didnt use their fcg hole locations.

I'm setting my trigger hole back from the hammer an extra .108" and the safety an extra X" from whats on their sheet.
