Default Carrizo Plains Calguns Hunt

Edit: Well, since people aren't reading the whole thread, I'll post that the date has been set for the first weekend in Dec. This is not an organized hunt or get together. It's just a bunch of hunters camping at the same campground. Everyone is responsible for knowing and following all laws that relate to hunting, camping, driving, etc. In the National Monument. Remember that there is ZERO Target shooting in the monument and it is in the conform zone. Also, part of it is closed to night hunting. There are endangered species there. So, as always, positively identify your game before pulling the trigger. There is no sign up or anything else for this. If you show up, great. If not, you missed out. I'm just hoping that there will be enough seasoned hunters to show noobs some of the basics about upland bird and/or varmit hunting. If anyone has a hunting license and needs to borrow a shotgun, PM me. I have a few loaners.

So, who's up for a weekend hunt in the Carrizo Plains? This would be a great way for new hunters to meet and hunt with some more experienced hunters. The Carrizo Plains offers a wide variety of game and non game animals. I'm thinking mainly about quail, chuckers, mountain quail, dove, rabbits and coyotes. But, there is the possibility of pigs in the mountains to the west of the plains. Deer and bear are also found west of the plians but won't be in season. It is in the condor zone so, any large game hunting needs to be done with lead free ammo. Personally, I'm thinking birds (quail and dove) and maybe some night time varmit hunting. Anyway, let's pick a weekend. These are the weekends I'm free and dove season is open. You can vote for more than one and we'll pick the weekend that the most people can attend.
BTW, the Carrizo Plains is a BLM National Monument. No target shooting is allowed, only hunting. There are very limited amenities. Figure on packing everything in and EVERYTHING back out. There are a few port-a-potties on the plains but, not many and probably not within miles of where ever we decide to camp. I'm not one for big campfires, loud music or drunks with guns. So, if that's your thing, feel free not to come. There is no reason that we would want to attract attention to ourselves.

I have yet to find a road out there that my little '95 Subaru can't handle WHEN IT IS DRY. But, I'll probably take my truck to sleep in. I figure we can all drive (with tin teepees if you want) to a base camp and then, split up into small groups and walk or drive to different areas to hunt. If it is wet, many roads are impassable but, we should still be able to get around enough to hunt.

I picked the plains partially because, it is close enough to LA and SF that people can easily drive from either area.

BTW, D11 season will be over by then. I already thought of that.

There is a motel there near the plains. California Valley Motel. Ken Tab owns it nice guy. We stay there when we hunt chimineas ranch. On the soda lake road north of the plains.

Sounds fun. I took a nice pig from there many years ago. Haven't been there in a long time. As long as its not raining there there should be no problem getting there.

If it rains, some of the area is like quicksand. It's mostly silt. Sounds like it will be a good time.

The poll includes all the dates I'm available. If you click on the nuber of votes each date has, you can see who has voted for which dates.

I think I'll set the dates early next week so, get your votes in.

I don't see dates either. I'm using the Tapatalk app on an iPad. Maybe I'll have a look using the HTML web interface. It's possible that you can't see it with Tapatalk.

I checked, using Firefox I can see the poll. Looks like Tapatalk doesn't support polls yet.

The dates are:
Nov 17-18
Dec 1-2
Dec 8-9
Dec 15-16
