Mosin-Nagant Picture Thread

It is a Redfield Palma sight, micrometer adjustable, mounted on the rear receiver wall. The caliber is 50 Alaskan. It was a project I had started back in 2003.

Very nice job. That's a piece of pride you got there. Wood is spectacular. Did that wood cost an arm and a leg?

It was a presentation grade piece of claro walnut I got from Richard's Micro-Fit back in '03...a bit spendy at the time, but cheap now, considering.

it may just be me, but I think you butchered it. they look better with original wood stocks and that. its not bad if you put a scope on it, just don't D&T that rifle. im somewhat of a collector of MNs and it looks better with original everything. they are meant to be a piece of history.

This rifle was not a piece of history, it was a piece of scrap. It had a junk barrel, missing handguard, cracked buttstock, and one missing barrel band. It is not in the original caliber now, and is a completely different rifle now. If it was serviceable, I never would have used the action.

As for originals, I have M91's, dragoons, M91/30's, M91/59's, M44's, M38's...and that's just Russians. My real passion is for the rifles of my ancestral homeland, Finland.

I can understand if its falling apart, but I cant justify bubbaing ANY mosin.

Well, if you feel like putting $300-$400 (used barrel, gunsmith labor to install, used stock/handguard/barrel bands, etc.) or so into returning a $100 rifle (in good condition) into usable shape, be my guest. If it was a non-import marked M91 or something that they didn't make 25 MILLION RIFLES of, I would have been more interested in saving it.

BTW, there is nothing "bubba" about that rifle.

I refinished both of the stocks, the 34 getting stripped, stained, and 3 coats of Tom's 1/3 wax. The T53 got a complete sanding, stain, 4 coats of tru-oil, and 2 coats of feed-n-wax, I hit the bolt with the buffing wheel and the rest of the metal got a good coat of oil. I haven't had an opportunity to fire the 34 yet but my 11 year old absolutely loves shooting the T53!

so in the same aspect.. is redoing a chevelle the same thing? or an old firebird?

that is your opinion in which few share, and to admit i think i am biggest at what you call butchering, i call making something alot more fun to shoot,

if you never shot a BA rifle with a pistol grip.. well in my Opinion its right up there with my *****.

Madison, this is one of my favorite Centerfold pictures of the 91/30. Bravo !
I'm going to do the same thing with my 1938 Tula. I'll keep the 43 Izzy completely authentic for now.

Here are my 3. They are nothing special but as the old saying goes, "There are many like them but these ones are mine!" I picked up all 3 from Calguns members and all of them were still packed in grease when I got them and came with all the accoutrements. One had been fired a few times by the original owner with a lot of cosmoline still on the gun (Not in the barrel or action though) and I was told it shot fine (Although I wouldn't do that!). The other 2 were caked and I spent hours degreasing them.

All 3 are 1942 - 1943 rounded receiver Izhevsks with matching# and great stocks (One has some arsenal repairs that I didn't even notice until I cleaned the gun up) The other two are perfect.

By the way, these guns are SHOOTERS! I underestimated how much FUN they are to shoot as well as being relatively easy on the wallet. And they are not ugly to me at all. I love the way they look and they shoulder and point very naturally.

My very first Mosin. I already know this will not be my last, already feeling the bug for more. It's a 1932 Tula Hex 91/30, she is called Oksana
Took about 3 weeks to refinish the stock. Started with denatured alcohol because I wanted to keep all the markings. Then finished with about 20+ coats of formby's tung oil finish low gloss.
This is how it looked when I first bought it.

Very nice MJ! Is it a Tula or an Izhevsk? Button bands? I have a 1934 Finn capture Izhevsk with the transitional front sight and button bands. Dont see these often at all.

I got this SCW in a sporter stock about eight years ago for uber cheap. I'd since been searching for a 1936 stock for it. I found one.

Two things to note: first, the wretched cat (Lula) who worked her way into this long-exposure pic, and, second, the blade front sight on this. It has the Made in USSR stamp on the receiver. It's an Izhevsk 1936 with no import marks.
