How to remove your FSB from a dimpled Saiga
This is how I remove the FSB from a Saiga.
First drill out the dimples, don't go too far, you do not want to get into the barrel. This is what it looks like after the dimples have been drilled out. Get a slug made from brass, copper, or aluminum and make sure the O.D. is smaller the the O.D. of the barrel. Here I'm using gear puller plates to isolate the FSB. The FSB and GB have both been removed from this barrel. Slight galling when I removed the FSB but thats an easy fix. I didn't drill far enough into the dimples, but IMO this is the best way with the least amount of risk to the barrel.

You can do whatever you like. The question is are you willing to damage your barrel while grinding the FSB and GB away.

First of all, thanks very much for the great pictorial. Can I ask a total Saiga noob question? I understand why you take the FSB off so you can put a standard threaded one on, but why do you have to take the gas block off? Will a standard ak gas tube not fit on the saiga GB? If so, is this true for all calibers? Thanks.

Ok thank you. Looking to do a featureless build, so no big deal.

as far as i remember, a bayonet lug nor a bayonet are features. i believe those only applied to the 2004 federal aw ban

I was told by an FFL sponsor here that the bayo lug was a feature on my Romy G. Might be fud, but I didn't want to risk the AW charge and since I didn't have a bayonet anyway, I filed it down. It would be nice to have clarification though.

A bayonet lug is not an evil feature, however it will make a sporting rifle a non sporting rifle immediately. So in other words 922r compliance comes into play immediately if you were to install a front sight base that accommodated a bayonet to be fixed.

I couldn't find any brass round stock that would be suitable to make a drift so I used a 1/4-20 acorn nut with the dome on the muzzle and used it to start pushing the barrel out of the FSB enough to shear what was still in the dimple. Worked like a charm and then I followed it up with a brass 1/4-20 Phillips pan head screw with a steel sleeve over it. Once I got the first ping I kept pumping the jack until the FSB slid off.

Just a thought- if you carefully milled (or god forbid, dremelled) a slot across where the dimples are (cut it until it's just about to break through, but DON'T cut through to the barrel), and used a flathead screwdriver hammered into the slot to crack the gas block and front sight, they'd probably slip right off.
That's how they used to remove barrel stubs from FAL parts kits back in the day. -Dave |
