Exclamation SFChron: "Billionaire Soros funding reform-minded District Attorney candidates"

Quote:
Billionaire philanthropist George Soros has dropped at least $275,000 into district attorney races throughout Northern California, supporting candidates who advocate reduced incarceration and other criminal justice reforms.

Such issues have long been a passion for Soros, who in past years has funded state ballot measures to legalize marijuana and weaken the “three strikes” sentencing law. He’s also tipped district attorney elections in other parts of the country — last year a Soros-backed political action committee helped clinch the win for civil rights attorney Larry Krasner in Philadelphia.

This year, the liberal financier has funneled contributions into the California Justice & Public Safety Political Action Committee, which is paying for campaign mailers and advertisements in Alameda and Contra Costa counties, as well as Sacramento, ahead of the June 5 state primary.

In Alameda County, the committee has spent $131,158 in support of Oakland civil rights attorney Pamela Price, a candidate known for her sharp criticism of police. She is challenging District Attorney Nancy O’Malley — a more mainstream progressive seeking a third term — on the June ballot.

O’Malley’s supporters say that Soros set his sights on the wrong race. With her track record of fighting mass incarceration and human trafficking, O’Malley isn’t the type of lock-’em-up prosecutor that the billionaire is seeking to rout, they say.

<snip>

“This is a movement across the country of individuals with resources supporting progressive candidates for D.A.,” said BART Director Lateefah Simon, who has endorsed Price.

Simon described Price as a fierce litigator who would keep police officers and sheriffs in check. If elected, she would hold sway over law enforcement agencies that “have the power to incarcerate black and brown people,” Simon said.

The California Justice & Public Safety Political Action Committee has spent $49,647 in support of Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton, who was appointed in September to replace Mark Peterson after Peterson resigned amid charges that he inappropriately spent campaign funds.

Becton, who is both the first woman and the first African American district attorney in Contra Costa County, is emphasizing bail reform and trying to mend racial disparities in the justice system. Her opponent, Paul Graves, is running on public safety issues and has backing from various county law enforcement agencies, as well as victim advocate Marc Klaas.

Soros has also nudged the district attorney’s race in Sacramento, which pits progressive challenger Noah Phillips against the more centrist incumbent Anne Marie Schubert. The PAC has spent $277,685 on Phillips, much of it coming from contributions made last week.

It’s unusual to have a contested district attorney’s race to begin with, said retired Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge LaDoris Cordell. Usually one person retains the job for term after term, and the seat opens up only when that person retires or dies.

And the people who get elected as district attorney tend to be conservative law-and-order types, not outsiders pressing for criminal justice reform, Cordell said. She attributes the sudden flare of progressive challenges to the Black Lives Matter movement, which draws attention to inequality in the justice system.

<snip>

“He’s trying to bring in people of color and other candidates who want to change the system,” she said.
Soros is using his billions to back DA candidates throughout the state and around the country (just search). These are extreme Leftist who want to impost "social justice" upon us instead of our American system of justice. This is a legal revolution without blood, changing the practice (who gets prosecuted) even if the theory (jurisprudence, Supreme Court decisions) remain (ignored).

Bane: Leave us.
Daggett: No, stay here! I'm in charge.
(Bane casually places his hand on Daggett's shoulder)
Bane: Do you feel in charge?
Daggett: ...I've paid you a small fortune.
Bane: And this gives you power over me?

Daggett: What are you?
Bane: I'm Gotham's reckoning. Here to end the borrowed time you've all been living on

The problem for us CCWers is that these SJW type DAs will seek to prosecute us if we have to defend ourselves - no matter how clear-cut our case may be.
They have the ability to use their prosecutorial powers to bully us.

I support the Criminal Justice Legal Foundation (a pro-Death Penalty organization) and just went to read their blog and what do I see: another example of Soros' money at work, protecting evildoers and hamstringing the law-abiding and LE.

Quote:
Marshall Project's False Narrative: In February of 2017, repeat felon and gang member Michael Mejia, released from prison a year earlier and a few days after release from jail for another crime, murdered his cousin and stole his car, got in an accident and murdered a responding officer. At the time of Mejia's arrest, law enforcement officials and victims groups pointed to California sentencing reforms (AB109 and Proposition 47) as the reason Mejia remained on the streets long enough to commit the murders. A recent LA Times article by Abbie VanSickle and Richard Winton cites a review the paper conducted with the Soros-funded Marshall Project which "found a far more complex chain of events that allowed Mejia to remain free despite his record of criminal behavior." The main findings reported in the article are: 1) Mejia's probation officer used excessive short jail stints to correct his criminal behavior. 2) The county was too slow in referring Mejia to drug treatment and when they finally did, he didn't show up. 3) The county waited too long to get tougher on Mejia for repeated new crimes and the prosecutor failed to have the probation officer participate in the plea bargain for his last offense.

This is a remarkable example of "hide the ball" that no serious person could possibly believe. Between 2010 when Mejia went to prison for Armed robbery and beating his victim with a baseball bat and in 2014, when he went back to prison for grand theft auto, Jerry Brown signed AB109. That law made Mejia eligible for early release because his violent prior and gang membership could not be considered. Also because of AB109, Mejia was considered a low risk offender who did not qualify for the intense supervision of parole, so he was released on the light supervision of county probation. Because of AB109, if Mejia violated this probation or committed new crimes, unless he committed a violent crime, the worst punishment he could receive is a short stay in LA's overcrowded county jail. Before AB109 and Proposition 47, Mejia could have been sent back to prison for a year on his first violation of parole, and certainly for committing any new felony.

The Times/Marshall Project narrative is that bureaucratic mistakes kept Mejia on the streets. The fact is that AB109 and Proposition 47, took the supervision of Mejia away from law enforcement and gave it to a newly formed brigade of bureaucrats under pressure by state law to give him repeated chances to show up for a program or reform himself. He did neither. And two innocent people are dead, including a police officer who was trying to do his job.

The Ongoing Attempt to Buy the Criminal Justice System
By Michele Hanisee

In 2016, Peter Weir was re-elected District Attorney, Jefferson and Galpin Counties, Colorado after weathering more than $1.3 million in viciously negative and false ads funded by George Soros. That campaign was one of more than a dozen District Attorney campaigns nationwide where Soros funded political action committees poured in huge sums of money at the last minute to elect candidates sharing his political and social justice agenda, particularly regarding opposing incarceration. Now, California is in the crosshairs of Soros funded campaigns that target District Attorney races in San Diego, Alameda, Yolo and Sacramento counties.

District Attorney elections used to be lightly financed campaigns largely focusing on personal qualifications. Definitions of criminal conduct and the proper penalties for that conduct were left to be decided in the political process by legislation or initiative. Now, as DA Weir notes, Soros has seized on District Attorney races to bypass the legislative process, seeking to elect candidates who support Soros’ political agenda and social views. A staple of these candidates is the promise not to enforce laws with which they disagree.

An example of this is the candidate Soros is now backing in San Diego County, who promises not to “enforce what we call the quality of life offenses” with which she disagrees. Similarly, in Florida Soros financed District Attorney Aramais Ayala announced she would refuse to seek the death penalty for any case prosecuted by her office. The Governor of Florida promptly removed all pending death penalty cases from her office, a move upheld by the Florida Supreme Court which commented Ayala’s decision “does not reflect an exercise of prosecutorial discretion, it embodies, at best, a misunderstanding of Florida law.”

While many DDA’s are protected by civil service, in the jurisdictions where that protection does not exist Soros financed DA’s have engaged in wholesale purges of experienced prosecutors upon election to “change the culture” and send the message to those remaining that their jobs exist at the political whim of the newly elected DA. In Philadelphia, Soros financed DA Larry Krasner fired 31 DDA’s in his first week of office; nearly one-third were in the homicide unit and included a prosecutor set to begin a murder trial the following Monday who was told “no” when asked to stay to complete that trial. In Houston, the Soros financed DA Kim Ogg (who ironically attacked Soros for supporting her primary opponent before accepting more than $500,000 from him in the general election) fired 37 veteran prosecutors in pursuit of her “culture change.”

Finally, as Soros backed candidates rail against “mass incarceration” it is noteworthy to look at who comprises the prison population in California. In 2008, 71% of California state prison inmates were serving time for a violent, serious, or sexual offense; as of 2016, 91% of state prison inmates are serving time for a violent, serious or sexual offense.

We can’t sum it up any better than DA Weir regarding George Soros’attempts to buy the justice system: “To see some East Coast billionaire who has no idea of local interests acceding to a radical reform agenda at the expense of our democratic process is incredibly dangerous.”

You can help: Billionaire’s radical agenda threatens public safety in San Diego
By Michele Hanisee

It doesn’t just seem as if there’s a new assault on criminal justice and public safety every time you turn around. There really is.

One of the latest, and most disturbing, is occurring right now in San Diego County. There, out-of-state billionaire George Soros is bankrolling for District Attorney an inexperienced deputy public defender who has never held a management and leadership position in her office. But, she has promised to be soft on crime if elected.

His anointed candidate, to whom he has thrown a whopping $1.5 million, has announced she will never seek the death penalty, refuse to charge those under 25 with crimes that could lead to a life without parole sentence, not charge drug dealers who sell to cops, release accused criminals without bail, and wants to “decriminalize” low level offenses by refusing to prosecute them. For good measure, she also is in support of closing prisons altogether.

The San Diego County Deputy District Attorney’s Association and its political action committee, San Diegans Against Crime (SDAC), support the current District Attorney, Summer Stephan in the June 5 election. So does LA County District Attorney Jackie Lacey and dozens of other individuals and organizations.

Stephan is a career prosecutor with lengthy trial experience who has also held many leadership positions while rising through the ranks in the DA’s Office over almost three decades. She has devoted her career to public safety, and she knows the toll that crimes take on individuals, families and communities.

Soros’ goal is to use his vast wealth to fund last minute campaign ads and subvert the democratic process, benefiting criminals at the expense of law-abiding citizens. And he has an impressive track record. He has succeeded in electing anti-law enforcement candidates in 12 of the 14 elections he has bankrolled nationwide.

But the SDAC isn’t tapping out. They’re financially outmatched, but they’re fighting furiously to protect public safety. They’re asking their fellow prosecutors to help blunt Soros’s radical agenda by contributing anything they can to Stephan’s re-election campaign. Any contribution – $10, $20, $50, $100, $200 – will help.

They’ve set up an easy way on their website to contribute by credit card.

We are committed to supporting elected officials who will enhance public safety and use the legislative process to enact reforms, rather than those who promise to ignore laws they don’t personally like. We encourage our members to do the same.

The affirmative action DA candidate here in San Diego has a fat "paid by George Soros" warning at the bottom of the ad. It also says "not authorized by the candidate".
