Default Remington R1 1911 (11/7 got back from rem cs, help needed)

Just jailed one the other day! Was paying off a full size colt but saw this beauty in the case and my lgs was complaining cause they ordered it for a guy and then he bailed! I said I'll take it if you let me roll the extra $ from the colt into an ar upper. Deal made and I got the rem for $650 plus all the usual fees! This thing felt really good in my hand and at first the sights bugged me but the more I played with it (ok I fondled and made noises and creeped some people in the store out) the more the sights grew on me.

Anybody have one of these? How is it?

I picked mine up a couple of weeks ago. It's a good looking gun. Haven't shot it yet, but am planning on it this week.

Nice! I can't wait to get mine! Did you get the stainless or their version of blued (black oxide I think is what they call it)?

I got the blued/black one. As far as looks, I like it better than my Sig 1911.

Sweet! Have you taken it out and got it dirty yet? Everything I've read says that they shoot low. Curious if they are still having this problem as most reviews were from when they were first released.

My friend had a bunch of 1911's and sold off all of them except for his R1. He said he liked it that much. However, he has just recently sold his R1 to fund a project. Unfortunately, I did not get to try it.

I own the R1 enhanced. Have 1250 rounds fired with it. It's a good running 1911, not nearly as tight(slide to frame fit) as my other 1911s but more then acceptable enough for its price point. I have added a Wilson combat magwell and slide stop. The stock slide stop would allow the followers of CMC mags to jump the stop, the Wilson piece corrected the problem. This was not a problem with the two Remington mags that came with the gun.
They are good entry level 1911s, mine is accurate, reliable and durable.

I kinda like that they aren't extremely tight! This gun is going to end up on my ccw and I like that its got a little play in it so if/when it gets dirty I'm hoping it won't jam up. The price was right, the gun felt great in my hand and it just looks secksy!

The if the slide frame fit is to tight your gun will jam when dirty myth, is just that a myth. An argument can be made that a loser fit actually allows more dirt and contaminates to infiltrate your gun, jamming up the action. My carry 1911 has a much tighter fit and has not been a problem in the 12 years its been on my right hip. A lot of the Internet 1911 myths are left overs from the 1970s and 80s, when a gunsmith had to build you a tight gun, today's of the shelf 1911s are a whole new ball game.

The R1 was one of my first choices for a 1911 since it had features I was looking for and was in budget. Couldn't find one in stock, so went another direction. Enjoy your R1!

Well, if you are still looking, Parallax Tactical on Miramar Rd. should have some ready for SSE.

Big green box sitting under the back seat of my truck right now! I'll run a box of ammo through it within the hour, gotta drop some parts off to the boys in the shop and then it's time for tiny explosions!

Just broke it down real quick! Wow, this thing is tight!!!!! If they didn't give you the tool to remove the barrel bushing there is no way it would continue off! Here's some glamour shots.

Well I finally got to shoot it and I have very mixed emotions! I took it straight out to the field to shoot it, didn't clean the factory tar off or anything! It jammed up a lot! Would not go into battery every 5-7 shots. Shot 35 rounds and went home and thoroughly cleaned it and lubed it up.

Round 2: same problem! So I changed ammo and away we went! It apparently does not like magtech ammo! Switched over to some Remington umc and it ate up a box of 50 with one failure to return to battery.

Loved the way it shot and poa poi was dead on for me with this gun. I had a water bottle dancing across the floor of the vineyard where I was shooting! More shooting and updates to follow later.

Good report. Sorry to hear about the issues. I hope they go away as they *might* be related to it being brand new and needing some breaking in.

Woohoo! Went out and shot the r1 again just a bit ago cause it was bugging me how it ran yesterday. Today was great ! No problems of any kind! This thing is incredibly accurate! I love it. Only put 60 rnds through it but it was nice there weren't any problems! Now I need a good range session of 2-300 rounds to really put it on her.

Cleaned after the 1st 35 rounds cause it was all gummy. Then ran another 65 through it after a thorough cleaning with a few problems and then threw it in the case til I went back today. No cleaning since after the first round of problems. Maybe it's just better ammo? Hopefully it just needed 100 rnds to loosen up and now it's ready to run!

Congrats that you got it running correctly, but I'll never understand why someone would shoot a gun...any gun without cleaning out the factory gunk and grit first.

Went shooting again with the Remington yesterday and Ii had one failure to feed on my second magazine of the day. When this happens the round is just rattling around, not in the chamber. I push the mag release and have to pull the magazine out cause it's bound up but once I pull it out just a bit the round chambers and the gun locks up just fine. Are my mags just new and super springy (very technical term there)? Do the mags and the gun just need to break in a lil more? Everything I've read on new mags says the 1st round is the one that causes problems, not halfway through the mag. Thoughts?

When I hit the range Friday, I'll check my R1 to see if I have any issues with the factory mags. I haven't used them yet, since I have 15 CMC and WC mags. But I do agree, it is dead nuts accurate as far as a combat pistol is concerned.

Seems that the kinks still haven't worked themselves out of the R1 so I talked to rem customer service today and they said they will send me a shipping label so they can check it out. Kinda bummed cause I love the look, feel and the way the gun shoots. Hopefully it comes back right and ready to run.

Had to order a R1? These are all over my area.
Nice pick up. Should be a great gun.

Seen a ton of satisfied reviews.

While I am no handgun specialist, I can say that the regular R1 is the best handgun I've fired yet, especially for its price. Spent an afternoon shooting my dads and I enjoyed it very much. Also, he installed a set of hogue rubber grips and I believe these made for a much better hold. No problems.

I'm hoping I just got a lemon or something cause I love the gun! Hopefully rem will make it right cause I've grown pretty attached to it.

Just got my r1 back from remington when I got home from work tonight! The turn around time was unbelievable! It arrived there on 11/1, was looked at on 11/4 and sent back my way on 11/5. Way to go remington!

So according to the repair paper sent back these are the problems:
Feed ramp/slide breech wall rough
Barrel bushing drags

Can anybody elaborate some more on what they might have done to my gun? I understand where everything is located but I'm not savvy enough to understand what they might have done. Thanks Calguns for any info.

I agree that Remington C/S is top notch. When I picked mine up from my LGS, I discovered that the Series 80 Safety plunger lever was broken. I'm not sure if it happened at the factory, or during the SSE process. I sent them an email, and 2 days later I had a replacement part in my mailbox.

Sounds like they polished your feed ramp and and checked and smoothed the breech for machining imperfections. I'm not exactly sure what "Barrel Bushing drags" means though.

Barrel bushing drag is when the bushing isn't clearance properly and drags on the barrel during the slides forward movement.

I'm not sure you might not have an issue with one of your magazines still based upon your post #28, but we'll find out after your range report. Often, when a round is "rattling" around its caused by insufficient magazine spring tension or spread magazine feed lips causing an inertial feed.

Awesome, thanks for that explanation! I'll try and run some ammo through it tomorrow and hopefully all is good!

Got busy with work but finally had the chance to run some more rounds through my R1 yesterday. Didn't mean to but grabbed a box of jhp instead of fmjs but I'm happy to report that I had no problems from the box of 50 I ran through it! I'll wait to fully claim it as problem solved but as of now it's looking good!

Weak springs in a factory 1911 mag?

Unpossible...
