Is that a standard stock ? I am looking for a bolt action .22 for ground squirrel control. I want something accurate for practice also, that looks like it would be what I am looking for. Is the rifle stock or did you modify it ?

Standard stock. Its made by Boyds, they make a very similar one called the "Tacticool" for many types of .22's http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/

Navyguy, thanks for the inspiration. Just put my MK II in jail to be freed on the 15th. Now the scope, I am thinking SS 10x also. I have the 3x9 SS and like it, so the 10 should be good to go. Thanks for the input.

A little update.
After my first range session I was about to take the rifle back. The five round magazine that came with the gun was defective, it wouldn't hold the rounds, it was split along one of the seams. I also tried a few different kinds of ammo but I couldn't get any of them to group decent. So I was single loading and not hitting anything, not fun. After doing some research I found Savage had a bad run of magazines but has since fixed the problem. Bad news is Savage customer service is phone only, you have to have your serial number handy, and closes at 4pm Eastern. Good news Savage online store is easy to use and new magazines are reasonably priced. I ordered 2 10 round magazines from Savage, and some Wolf Match from Midway. Second range session I really fell in love with this rifle. The 2 extra magazines functioned flawlessly and the wolf match shot like a dream! My friend shot a few 10 shot groups about the size of a quarter at 50 yards. I only have about 300 rounds through the gun and I feel like its still getting broken in. The Eagle stock pad is OK, but the Velcro is ruff while shooting from the bench. I think the adjustable cheek rest will be better. I ordered a Sinclair bore guide and a DIP adjustable cheek rest. http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/si...FOR_22_LONG_RI http://www.diproductsinc.com/Detail....11998&CAT=3602 I will try to post some pictures of the groups my friend shot as he saved them. Future plans include accuracy testing with different torque on action screws, bedding, texturing the stock, and some Krylon camo. I will update this tread when I get a chance! Just a quick question on the tactical rimfires you guys are shooting. I've read through a couple of threads here and quite a few people seem to be using 10x or 16x fixed scopes.. Do you guys have to shoot offhand much? Maybe I need to practice a whole lot more but 12 or 16x is tough to hold steady hahah.. Maybe its just me.. With my cf rifles I like something in the 5x or so for offhand shots..

Great work for a bubblehead I wonder if Savage sells those stocks, I replace my MK II FV stock, needs a cheek piece as does my 93R17 FV, I have a strap on pad but would swap the stock out for one of those in a heartbeat..

The shoots at APTS we have done 150 yard offhand shoots so yes, an adjustable scope with a lower power is very helpfull. I run a 6-18.

I also encountered bad mags with this rifle. The one that came with the rifle was defective and one of the three spare mags that I got was also defective. A 50% failure rate.

A note on Savage mags...find one that works well, and take your funky mags and fix them. 90% of the time its the feedlips holding the rounds at the wrong angle or too high/low. Find a mag that works, and with some pliers, tweek the other untill the top round is the same height and angle. Another common issue is the mag wells are very sloppy which can affect the angle the top of the mag is held at. If you pull the action out of the stock you will see why: They are formed out of one piece of stamped steel. But it is usually "sprung" open. Some times you can pinch the mag well sides together, or shim the sides of the mag well in the stock to pinch it together.

Here is a picture of the jacked up magazine. I finally got through to customer service, not really impressed. They have cheesy hours, a long lunch break, then when you do get through your put on hold for 20 to 40 minutes, then your reward is a crappy attitude. They did agree to send me out a new 5 round mag.
My bore guide from Sinclair came in today!! Its pretty awesome, since it is cut on the bottom, I'm not to sure how much it helps keeping crap out of the action. But it makes running the cleaning rod about 100 times easier. |

Made a trip to the range today. I know I can do better, we were a little rushed as it was getting late.
The adjustable cheek rest came in today, more to come on that soon! Need to order more wolf match ammo! |

http://www.savagegunsmithing.com/rimfire_rifles.html Midway has Wolf Match Target ammo on sale right now and in stock!! http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct...tNumber=666826 while I was at it I ordered 2 new 10 rounders just for lazyness!! (Dealer price is 13.99, and Savage sells them for $14) http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct...tNumber=994737 and a B-Square Bubble Bore Level Weaver-Style. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct...tnumber=498458 Last edited by Navyguy0023; 01-29-2011 at 2:02 PM.. |

That's a neat target... is this another site's challenge target? Seems like fun... almost like a kid's coloring/activity book!

Nice rifle and the shootin' ain't so bad either. I just got a FV-SR myself but haven't been able to shoot it because the factory 2-piece scope mount seems to be under-sized. I ordered an EGW 1 piece mount similar to your DIP mount. Seeing your rifle just made waiting for parts harder. Thanks a lot.

boydsgunstocks.com, They make a variety of stocks for the Savage rifles. I have two stocks from them and very pleased with the fit/finish of both. Not cheap, not too expensive.
