Default my new ruger

long time reader, recent member, and first time posting here. finally picked up my new rifle yesterday after the mind numbing 10 day wait. thought i'd share it here for all. won't be able to go test it out until wednesday, and only indoors at that, so i'll most likely just test the iron sights out. i recently moved to oxnard, so if there's any tips on nice outdoor ranges in the area, i'd love to hear them! yes i did replace the flash suppressor with a muzzle brake. i read during my wait that there tends to be a tuning fork effect with the suppressor, and it was true in my case. very noticeable when working the bolt and placing/removing the magazine. i also bought 2 poly mags to replace the stock steel one. the steel one is much heavier, noticeably longer, wobbles when seated, and is a PITA to load. i'll report back after i hit the range. now, for the pics...

Love it! I have one too! Range report soon please. The polymer magazine fits better.

Hope you have some 168s to send through it. 147 / 150s don't do well through mine.

thanks for the kind words, everyone.

@evans- i haven't had any range time yet, so i won't know until wednesday

@andrew- i've only started to snag .308 as soon as the gun went into holding status, so i don't have much as you could guess. i have some american eagle/federal 150gr and some winchester super x 180gr. i'm trying to snag some more online when it's not at too absurd a cost. i'll be sure to find some 168gr to try out.

@dino- i just looked it up and it seems not too shabby, i'll have to make some time to go out there when work doesn't get in the way

almost went with their m41, but figured if i ever shoot prone, i'm less likely to kick up a dust storm with this one.

I just got one last month too and I love it. Mine goes "ping" too when I cycle the bolt But I'll leave the FH on for now. Where did you find the polymer mag? I hear you can top load those?

i found them on ebay. got 2 for just under 80 bux shipped. came from northern cali so i had them in 2 days. here's a link to the ones i got, he still has 3 left. you can pop the rounds in thru the top of the mags, and you can also top load while the mag is in the rifle.

the polymer mags are ruger oem. you can get them off their website when they're in stock, but that doesn't seem to be very often. that's why i went the ebay route.

What do you mean 147 / 150 don't do well, as in not accurate?

This is the type of info I'd like to know before buying one.

Mine has no problem with 147, 150 or 155 grain bullets. I happen to use 168 grain Hornady VMax and accuracy is exceptional with 42.0 of RL15.

anyone try the hornady steel match 155gr thru their's yet? i can find that more commonly than some others and it seems like it might be not bad for the price.

Very nice. I love that detachable mag. Sure wish they made a retrofit kit for the M77 All Weather to add it.

That's cool you can top load the polymags. That was 1 of my issues with the ruger scout rifle. That muzzle brake looks loud. Congrats on a fine multi purpose rifle

For mine, I get 4-6" groups with them at 100 yards and less than 1" with 168s

just got back from a short trip to the range and i have to say that i LOVE this gun so far! i didn't have time to venture out to piru outdoor range so i just went over to shooter's paradise here in oxnard. it's a small indoor range but i didn't care, i just wanted some trigger time with the new rifle. i shot a box of american eagle 150gr just using the iron sights and all but the first shot (which i flinched on since i didn't know what to expect yet) were center ring and all touching. i don't really take that to mean much right now though since it really isn't fair to judge overall accuracy from such a short distance. recoil was nowhere near what i expected, very manageable. the bolt, contrary to what i've seen several online say, was smooth and very easy to use. no failures to eject or failures to feed were experienced. and boy was this sucker loud! i basically shut down the range as soon as i started to shoot. most were wondering wtf was causing the ruckus, but the 2 shooters on either side of me (both women) couldn't even stay in their lanes while i was shooting since the concussion was too much for them. my girlfriend was standing behind and to my right as i was shooting and she told me she could feel it throughout her whole body and she didn't even want to touch it after that! i'd assume the reduced recoil and the increased sound (to the sides at least) would both be from the aftermarket brake, but i can't say for sure since i never even shot it with the stock flash suppressor. i can't wait til i can take this outdoors and shoot at some distance and get my scope zeroed in. i might hit up the glass factory with a work colleague in the coming week and see what i can do there.

I would like one but the $999 my LGS wants for one has me debating. Is this a good deal for me or the dealer?

not a good deal for you imo. i found mine in store on "sale" for just over 800, before tax. still more than i'd like, but i haven't seen one in store in a looooong time and i just really wanted one so i snagged it. i'd say wait it out if you can or check gun broker. my dad was quite jealous that i found one first so he went online and found one (new) for just under what i paid. he should have his in a few days and he'll just have to pay the ffl transer fee and no tax since he's back in oklahoma.
