Need Advice on a 9mm
My husband bought a Ruger P95 and I can't shoot the darn thing.
My hands are very small and the grip is so big I can't get a good grip on it (even with both hands) It jams everytime I shoot it. He can unload the magazine and no jams! I even look at the gun and it jams on me. It's very annoying. I have never had this problem with any of my guns! Just this Ruger P95. My question is anyone have any advice on a 9mm with a smaller grip I can buy for myself. Thanks! Last edited by Dezertchick; 08-25-2009 at 9:18 AM.. |

Speaking to Sig about a gun for my wife, they suggested the Sig P239.

As I wrote in the other post: how about a Beretta 92FS Compact Type M? It took me a while to find one, but it is now one of my GF's favorites, along with the Sig P6. Both of these are smallish single stack 9mm's, so they are better suited to smaller hands. The Beretta might be nice because they are tough to jam, with the open top (impossible?). Check out a Sig P239 if you want something a little higher end.

Hey folks, I am on the spot here. Dezchick is my wife. I bought this p95
because it looked like a sweet gun for $320.00 So far, great gun. I picked it up yesterday after a month long cool off and dros I figured we shot 150 rounds though it last night. I myself shot it, not a single jam, I am truly amazed, Pretty accurate gun, and it drops the spent shells,, for the most part within a 15 foot radius to the right So, Wife (Dezertchick) shots it, and jams up almost every shot, We try every hand arm combination to her to keep it rigid enough to operate, and still jams every time on her. So im at a loss, I looked at the Sig this morning, over $800.00 Next move, go to gun range, rent something that will work for Dezerchick and go from there. I knew going in, this P95 may have a too large of a grip for her, her hands are about half of my size, but could not pass up for the price. Sorry babe, the Walther p22 and the revolvers will have to suffice for now Wayne |

Sig P239 or try the S&W-M&Ps model. The M&P comes with three interchangeable backstraps to accommodate a wide variety of hand sizes, sits low in the hand, and has shorter trigger reach, try it and you will like the feel of the weapon in the hand much better.

You can get a Sig P6 for a little more than the Ruger:

+1 I would also suggest the S&W - M&P 9mm .... Very nice gun and comfortable for a womans hand. Try renting one from a range and take one for a spin .

Lindz likes HPs but likes the ergos of CZ75/SP-01 better. I agree with her, for different reasons. Sigs are comfortable but a little fat- a thin-gripped CZ or 1911 is her favorite.

I can second the CZ and +1 for price.
1911s and other single stackers like the sig 239 or kahrs are quite nice as well and should be at least explored. Each of these has been liked by more than one women I have taught.

Maybe this will be helpful. Your husband probably has a stronger grip than you do which is why the Ruger functions fine for him. When you consider a soft grip, compounded by the poor grip because of hand size you are most likely limp-wristing the gun. The gun requires a firm grip to cycle the slide. if you limp-wrist, you are absorbing the energy needed to cycle it. Make sure your forearm is straight with the wrist and bend your elbow slightly. Don't fight the recoil. Let the gun rise up and then bring it back down to the target. This will shift the recoil from the wrist to the elbow and let the slide function as it should. A good way to know how hard to grip a pistol is to think of it as an egg. Grip it tight enough to hang on, but not hard enough to break the egg.
What happens all to often is that we buy a 9mm because its a smaller cartridge. The guns are lighter and the lighter frame makes the gun more snappy on the felt recoil. 9mm autos are known to have an unpleasant muzzle flip. Just for fun, borrow or rent a 45acp 5" barrel. The gun weighs more which cancels the recoil better and the bullet is slower which helps too. A lot of women find the 1911 easier to shoot than most 9mm. If you have your heart set on 9mm because frankly, its cheaper to buy ammo and smaller overall, then find a pistol with a dual spring setup on the guide rod. HK USP or P2000 are a great example. The main spring captures the initial force and the secondary spring stops the slide from hammering the frame. The second component is the felt recoil you probably don't like. When you are more comfortable with the felt recoil, you won't feel the need to limp-wrist out of anticipation. The added benefit is the cool factor your husband will like. My guess is, you will not be a collector of guns like most guys are. Spend a little extra on the right gun and enjoy the times when you do go shooting. Can I also add, the HK family of pistols use a finish which is very resistant to corrosion. This means you won't have to keep it oiled like most other guns. Less maintenance is needed. The pistol comes with multiple size back straps to accommodate all size hands. Last edited by drcoffee; 08-26-2009 at 8:04 AM.. |

i'm so glad you're being proactive re the next gun and not leaving it to hubby!
the kahr is the one i did not like because the cartridge ejected into my face or my hair....neither of which was pleasant or conducive to continued shooting. mz

Ivan beat me to it. I was going to say CZ sp-01 or 75b. and add the bersa thunder 9, or ruger px4 storm with interchangable backstraps, or m&p 9mm. I think you'll have OK luck with the bunch of them. Good luck finding a P.P. bersa though.

Check out the Smith and Wesson M&P series. The major feature I like is the adjustable grip.

Gun for wife.
The issue with many guns is that double stacked magazines means fat grips.
On the Ruger, putting on thinner grips may help. Gun probably jams on her because she doesn't have a firm grip. Does it have to be a 9mm, a Colt 45 is a single stack and may fit her hand better. I shoot best with a 45 myself and recoil is not that bad. You could convert a 1911 to fire 9mm. Nicki Last edited by nicki; 08-26-2009 at 12:59 PM.. Reason: spelling |

Dezertchik, did you check out that Beretta in the classifieds I showed you in post 19?? those have interchangeable backstraps to adjust for different sized hands. A pharmacist that I work with bought one and he has very small hands. He loves that thing and got it in .45acp with stellar reviews saying the recoil is very manageable. Check it out.

If you can locate one, I highly recommend a S&W 3913 or 3914
9mm single stack with a 3.5" barrel. Very compact, reliable and accurate and great for shooters with small hands. 586L-Frame DLC’s S&W 3913. DLC's 3914 w 10rd mag. My S&W 3914 & 3913. x Last edited by 586L-Frame; 08-27-2009 at 7:29 AM.. Reason: correct spelling |

As a woman with small hands I tried many, many guns before settling on my Glock 19. Gentlemen you should not assume that a woman will not become a gun collector. Ladies like to accessorize so I think the pink Mosquito would look nice with my pink ears (protection), and I don't think my husband and his buddies will be asking to take it to the range. The Sig P226 is also a nice gun. I got to try it a 2 weeks back when I invited myself along to the range with the guys. My husband's buddy promptly took it back when after only 10 rounds he saw I was a better shot with his new gun. It was well balanced and is definitely going on my list. Some of the 1911's I've tried did not feel balanced when I handeled them. Maybe I have weak wrists, but my suggestion is to "Try before you buy." Only you will know what is right for you.

I went to the range and tried several 9mm guns until I picked up my 226, and fell in love. I can't handle how boxy Glocks are, and the XD didn't feel as right as the 226 But like everyone else has been saying, try before you buy.. you will know the right gun when you feel it. |

My wife has teeny hands, she's very petite.
She really digs the SIG P6/P225. Best deal going in a reliable 9mm. Never malfunctioned on her little wrists and hands. Turner's has 'em for $400. They were $300 last year. You can get similar deals on the SIG P6 in the Private Sales section here on Calguns if you despise Turner's or if they're too far from you. Another small 9mm I like is the CZ P01. Alot of guys hate the CZ's because of the small slide not giving much to grab onto whe chambering a round or clearing the weapon. Again, my wife likes this because of the small slide. She and I think it's the most perfectly balanced compact 9mm ever! Only problem is they're now costing close to $600... Hope that helps.

I feel your pain. My wife has very small hands and I am built like the big gorilla that I am.
I took her to 3 gun shops, 2 indoor shooting ranges that rented guns and pestered many friends for her to shoot MANY different guns. I did this so she would find the right gun that worked for her. She ended up with a Springfield XD 9mm subcompact because she could cycle the action very easily, it fit her hand and she was able to conceal it better with her body style. Oddly enough, she thought at first that she would just use my P95... Jammed every time due to her weak wrists. No biggy, but better to find out that it wasn't a good gun for her before she started carrying it. Good luck with your quest and congradulations on not giving up on what can be a very discouraging quest for the "right gun for you". |
