Default Adams Arms or Osprey Gas Piston with .22lr Conversion

If using an Adams Arms gas piston kit, could I just turn off the gas (on the valve) to use with a .22lr or do I ALSO need to remove the op rod?

I'm guessing for the Osprey, I have to remove the op rod?
