Thumbs up K-98 From AIM

The BBT brought my K-98 and ammo about 3/4hr ago.. so far after a short barrel cleaning shows the bore to be in excellent condition with a receiver date 1940. The waffen marks are not messed with and the wood seems to be in decent shape. The handguard has 2 biscuit repairs but is solid. no sight hood or locking screws as was expected. Over all .. a fantastic rifle for $209.00. Oh and hardly any cosmo on or in the rifle! The extractor is a brown anodizing??? Bolt face shows almost no wear with the original milling marks on the face. Not bad for my first purchase with my new C&R FFL

What is a sight hood, and is it needed to shoot the rifle? I bought one from AIM too without knowing anything about the rifle before they ran out.

Its just the thing that guards the front post sight. It isnt neccessary and I'm pretty sure the russians removed them from all the k98's that they captured and re-arsenaled. Its common and doesn't matter. In fact, its a little piece of history. Enjoy it.

Just got my 2 rifles, apparently my whole neighborhood has them too, UPS guy says he has tons of "long" boxes today , everybody on my street has a gun I think, its a good neighborhood.

My dig cam is at the fiancee's apt so take my word on it, photos are as above. I bought some of the 2003 RC mausers and they were hit and miss, out of 5 only 1 had a perfect bore, the others are ok looking but have pitting and shoot crappy.

THESE AIM MAUSERS........are pristine, and I am not kidding, all markings are intact and the bores are 100%. Clean rifling and shine. I suspect these rifles came from a different cave or stockpile cause they are a lot nicer than previous RCs.

I got a Do 38 287 (on barrel) 243 (on ring) 1943 with weimar and nazi eagles all intact on it.

R19duv (barrel) duv 41 (on ring)

The duv is a keeper as it accepts a sight hood and I love sight hoods

I am tempted to order 2 more. I cannot believe how they look, very close to bringback K98s seen at shows for $1000+

If you want a collector or a shooter, now is the time guys!
I love AIM

NRAhighpowershooter

Does your 1940 K98 have the horizontal grooves on the front sight block to hold the sight hood? If it doesn't then you're not missing the hood.

As far as I know, the germans did not put sight hoods on the K98 until 1941.

In 1940, they also switched from the 10" to 12.5" cleaning rod. If you are looking for a replacement try to measure the depth of the rod retaining hole with a coat hanger before purchasing one.

BTW, it appears your K98 was manufactured by Mauser AG Oberndorf.

ok.. it is a true 1940 K-98.. no grooves for the hood and it will take the short 10" rod.

Got a 1941 BYF with a TON of Eagles+swastikas.

Wood is ok, and the bore looked like a sewer pipe when I first pulled it out of the box. I'm still scrubbing the hell out of the bore with Hoppes bore gel.

Strong rifling, but the bore is still a bit dark.

Blueing is pretty good except for the brown extractor.

The redish brown extractor is very common on the k98 RC's. I don't know if it was done during German manufacture or Russian refurb.

I spent the extra $20 also, I figure it is worth it if you are only getting one or two. I ordered online and got an email with the UPS tracking number when they processed the order (a few days later). I get mine Thursday. I will post pictures, so you can see if we wasted our money

I missed my shipment this afternoon but UPS.com says they will try another attempt. I find my self constantly peeking out the window.

BTW: no hand pick here. I am a cheapskate. I have two coming and it will be my first FFL03 purchase.

Someone posted on the CMP site in the 'ask each other' forum , that they got a bad K-98, that their gunsmith told them the rifle was unsafe and it wouldn't chamber a round at all....

I hope that wasn't from the batch AIM just got.
What do I need to do when I get the Rifle, Hopefully here in 3 hours
Do I need to have a gun smith look at it? If So, is there one here in the San Jose Area?
Do I need to check Head spacing?

It's my first C&R, what's the procedure

Thanks

I just picked up mine today at UPS, and boy are they greasy... a pair of 1940s. I am not really sure what to look at since I am new to C&R and K98s but the one thing that strikes me about both of them are that they have different barrel bands. One is solid the other has oval cut outs, if that makes any sense. I will try to get pictures later...

This C&R thing is great. Just back ordered a pair of K31s. I can't stop.

My K98 showed up yesterday. It's the same year and code as NRAHPS's. His actually looks a tad bit better than mine and I coughed up the extra $20. Looks like the handselect is a sucker's bet on these. I'll try to post some pics later.

Mine are due to arrive on Wednesday.

Anyone have a line on original cleaning rods for these?

Also who is shooting the steel cased ammo as opposed to the brass cased ammo?

I am on the hunt for ammo (preferably boxer primed non-corrosive) and cleaning supplies.

I agree, Mine looks about the same, could have haved 20.00
Was going to post pics until I found out my camera is broke

Question though
Can I just go out and start shooting it or Do I need to take it to a gunsmith first?
If So, Is there one here in the Bay Area?

Upon closer inspection I'm really not all that happy with mine. Everything is ok except for the stock. Some russian sanded the hell out of it. It has a pretty good size chunk of wood missing in the reciever ring area on the extractor side. The grip area is sanded so much that it just makes the rifle look kinda funky. The thing that really chaps my @ss is that I shelled out the extra 20 bones for handselect to try to avoid something like this.

boomstick, AIM is 100% on returns, call them, explain it nicely and they will alwasy take it back, I had the same problem on a select M24 a while ago, it was far from good, and they replaced it, no questions and credited me the shipping.

I took a pass on handpick.

The stock, barrel, and receiver have matching serial numbers.

Out of the box, the bore looked like a sewer pipe. I've probably dropped 3 hours trying to clean it up with Remington 40x bore cleaner. I can't tell if it's rust or dried preservative in the grooves.

There appears to be significant pitting on the muzzle end of the bore.

I'm debating whether to have it sent back.

Got mine today, 1943 bcd. Looks pretty good, stock and metal are VG, not sure about the bore yet, mine had a fair amount of cosmoline inside and out. I did a quick cleaning and the barrel had strong rifling so I'm hoping it will clean up. Worth the $200 I think. I'll post pics later tonight.

Only negative is the rear sight leaf was broken, but I've found a replacement already.

I also found two front sight hoods, so if anyone is looking for one, I've got an extra. PM me.

Here's some photos of mine. The AIM Handselect K98 is on the bottom. I spoke to one of the Aim guys today. It's going back.

You are sending that one back? It could be some special super valuable "sniper" stock or something?

Got mine yesterday after a failed delivery attempt. Looks great. The metal is tip-top condition, with strong, even bluing everywhere but the buttplate. The bore is clean, bright and shiny with strong rifling. The stock is another matter, though, and it's drenched in cosmo. The Russkie red shellac is also noticeably gross. Definitely going to get stripped and refinished...
Otherwise, it's a great deal and I'm sure it'll be a great shooter.

EDIT: BYF 42 Manufacturer code

I forgot to ask for the super valuable sniper stock
Mine is baking on the dash as I write this. I will definitely strip of the shelac, the wood looks good where they wiped it.

Just for the record, heavy sanding is VERY common on RCs.

Even hand select will not becessarily get one an unsanded rifle...
