Default Non Cell Network Map App

Anyone have a good recommendation for a map app that doesn't use the cell network. Ya know, when you're out in BFN and can still use your cell phone as a GPS. I liked Orux maps, but they're not supported anymore and want something along those lines.

Iphone has "you need a map", which is OK. Download maps to your phone, no connection needed after that.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/you-...415545903?mt=8

There's also Topo Maps US - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/topo...033846196?mt=8 - but I don't have that.

ETA - bought Topo Maps US last night; the base version is free, but to get high resolution maps costs $. I spent $11.99 for 3 months of high-res access, spent about half an hour downloading the center and east county maps for Contra Costa.

Back Country Navigator. You can download maps, use them with no cell or Wi-Fi service.

A great free app for both iOs and Android is Galileo. You pick and choose which maps world wide you want on your device.

Works great but you need a way to make geo-referenced PDFs. If your not an Arc user the base maps are limmited.

True that.

But you can also download geo-referenced quad maps from USGS for camping and backpacking.

Having tried a half dozen apps, my preference is STILL paper! Batteries don't go dead on paper. If you insist on digital, I perfer a stand-alone GPS for navigation. Even in airplane mode and relying on just the internal gps, my phone goes dead way too soon to be a reliable nav source.

As laurelpark said, AAA maps; I have a county map in each car and one in my pack ... excellent reference.

This app right here. You can buy add on's. I bought the BLM boundary add on. If I was hunting I would buy the Hunting zone boundaries.

You can use the USGS too maps, National Forest maps, among others paid or free.

Just remember if you go with BCN the developer is coming with a new app that's supposed to be better.
